Notification of discussion

A few months ago, you participated in a discussion on Wikipedia talk:Did you know about Gibraltar-related DYKs on the Main Page. I am proposing that the temporary restrictions on such DYKs, which were imposed in September 2012, should be lifted and have set out a case for doing so at Wikipedia talk:Did you know/Gibraltar-related DYKs. If you have a view on this, please comment at that page. Prioryman (talk) 22:01, 13 February 2013 (UTC)

TAFI

Hello,
In the past few days, Today's Articles for Improvement has gone through many changes.

  • We have modified the process for adding Nominations, which now uses a template/table format and requires only 3 supports for an article to be selected.
  • There is now a Holding Area, where articles are kept for discussion before being selected for a particular date.
  • The TAFI schedule now involves adding 10 articles weekly, chosen from a variety of topics.
  • We now have an Accomplishments page where we will be highlighting our older TAFI articles which have now become quality articles on the Wikipedia.

The Project is almost ready to hit the Main Page, where it will be occupying a section just below "Did you Know" section. Three article from the weekly batch of 7 will be displayed randomly at the main page, the format of which can be seen at the Main Page sandbox. There is also an ongoing discussion at the Main page talk over the final details before we can go forward with the Main Page.

If you have any ideas to discuss with everyone else, please visit the TAFI Talk Page and join in on the ongoing discussions there. You are also invited to add new nominations, and comment and suport on the current ones at the Nominations page. You can also help by helping in the discussions at the Holding Area.

Above all, please do not forget to improve our current Today's Articles for Improvement

Thank you and hoping to have some productive work from you at the Project,

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. State income tax

Hi. I see that you have undertaken to provide tables giving details on each state's income tax in State income tax. I was concerned when I saw your edits, because you removed a lot of content from the article, but I see that you are going in a good direction. Looking at your work so far, though, I predict that the article will be very unwieldy (hard to read and hard to edit) when it is populated with more than 50 tables.

I'd like to suggest that this article be maintained as an overview of U.S. state taxation of income, and that the details of the individual states should be presented in state-specific articles. Not only would these be easier to read and edit, but they would be more convenient for users who are interested in details for only state and for editors who are knowledgable their own state's laws and might be inclined to update a state-specific article.

Additionally, most states' income tax systems are actually a rich source of encyclopedic content. Some time ago, I created an article about Tennessee's only income tax on individuals -- Hall income tax -- and was rather astonished at its length when I got done with it. (It's a pretty simple tax, as income taxes go.)

What do you think of the idea of restoring the old content to State income tax and moving your tables into individual articles, each of which could be expanded to become more extensive articles? --Orlady (talk) 17:21, 3 March 2013 (UTC)

I was trying to base it on Sales taxes in the United States. I understand your concern, and perhaps we could split off the one section that I've been working on into its own article. - Presidentman talk · contribs (Talkback) 18:31, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
Now that you mention it, that sales tax article is also kind of long. However, since the state-specific discussions are mostly prose, it doesn't seem as difficult to navigate as I'm anticipating the income tax article becoming when it's filled with tables.
My thought was that the State income tax should continue to have summary sections -- the map, the summary of states that don't have a general individual tax (which summary you pulled out of the article when you started the state-by-state summary), states with a flat tax, etc. -- while detailed expositions of rates should be in articles for the individual states: e.g., State income tax in Alabama or a more comprehensive Taxation in Alabama. I think you are suggesting that the details for all states could be split into a single article covering all states with an income tax. Am I interpreting you correctly? I do see merit in that approach -- considering that some state tax structures are pretty simple (e.g., flat rates), it might not make sense to try to create a stand-alone article for every state. --Orlady (talk) 20:03, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
Yes, you are interpreting me correctly. In reply to your exposition of your idea, I'd prefer a comprehensive "Taxation in X" article to "State income tax in X", etc. I think that perhaps that such articles in that vein would be better than my original idea. - Presidentman talk · contribs (Talkback) 22:20, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
A complete set of "Taxation in X" articles is a worthwhile goal. Only three states have such articles now (Indiana, New Jersey, and Oklahoma). (Also, there is a short "taxation" section in New Mexico.) However, a quick scan of Category:State taxation in the United States supports my hunch that state tax topics are sufficiently complex that almost all individual states ought to have multiple taxation articles (in addition to an overview article). There are "Taxation in X" categories for 16 states, but except for the two of these that have "Taxation in X" articles, they don't appear to have comprehensive coverage of the state's taxation situation. Rather, they contain articles about discrete topics related to specific facets of the state's taxation, one example being that Hall income tax article I wrote. (Speaking for myself, I found it much easier to write about a single tax than to get my hands around the much broader topic of taxation in the state.) When I skimmed the three existing "Taxation in X" articles, I thought that the articles for Oklahoma and Indiana both had possibilities as templates for other "Taxation in X" articles, but neither of the articles is ideal in its scope and organization.
PS - You probably don't need to continue to give me Talkback templates, as I have this page watchlisted. --Orlady (talk) 23:25, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
I agree that the Indiana and Oklahoma articles can serve as models for other states. Perhaps since it is already created, we can start working on the New Jersey article as a guinea pig? - Presidentman talk · contribs (Talkback) 23:29, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
Either that, or start by spinning out a separate article about Taxation in New Mexico. It might be easier to start with content that's in reasonably good shape, but brief, than with an article like the one for New Jersey. --Orlady (talk) 23:39, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
I agree. Let's just spin off the New Mexico info. - Presidentman talk · contribs (Talkback) 23:42, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
I've started this article at Taxation in New Mexico. - Presidentman talk · contribs (Talkback) 00:00, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
I'll be on the case soon... --Orlady (talk) 22:56, 4 March 2013 (UTC)
I spent some time with the article. I made some content additions (but I haven't yet written about oil and gas taxes) and did some rewording. One thing I realized is that we should adopt one standard rule for all of these articles: Never state that any particular list of taxes is the complete list of taxes levied by a particular state unless that statement is backed by a very solid reliable source. I say that because I am very sure that the article is incomplete. I don't know what taxes it is missing, but it's reasonable to assume that the state also has gasoline tax, taxes on alcoholic beverages, etc., etc. --Orlady (talk) 15:56, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

WikiProject Christianity Newsletter April 2013

ICHTHUS

April 2013

Membership report
The parent Christianity WikiProject currently has 357 active members. We would like to welcome our newest members, Thomas Cranmer, Mr.Oglesby, and Sneha Priscilla. Thank you all for your interest in this effort. We would be able to achieve nothing here without the input of all of you. If any members, new or not, wish any assistance, they should feel free to leave a message at the Christianity noticeboard or with me or other individual editors to request it.

From the Editor

We apologise for the hiatus in the publication of this newsletter due to unforseen circumstances leading to the wikibreak of John Carter, and so I have taken over as acting editor, and have taken this opportunity to move the publication date to the start of each month as planned, to better reflect on the previous month and look ahead to the next. This issue covers the period of time from mid-January to the end of March.

Since the last issue we have seen the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI and the election of Pope Francis. This has received much coverage both in the world media and on Wikipedia. While there is still much work to do, several quality articles have been written and the editors involved are thanked for their efforts.

This month we look ahead to Easter and the celebration of God's love for mankind through the crucifixion and resurrection of his Son Jesus Christ. With that, I wish you all happy reading!

P.S. Please click here to add the new Christianity noticeboard to your watchlist to follow the latest discussions relevant to WikiProject Christianity and subprojects.

Church of the month

This image of the Church of Saint Ildefonso, Portugal by Poco a poco was recently promoted to Featured Image. Thank you and congratulations for the great image!

Contest of the month
No particular contest this month. I am however getting rather close to getting together a more or less complete set of articles relating to different areas of Christianity which can be found in recent reference sources on the broad topic of Christianity, and about various subtopics, which I hope to have finished in the next few weeks. I wonder what the rest of you might think of, maybe, making the contests of future months be basically directed at filling in the gaps of our existing coverage of topics, like those topics given significant coverage in specialized reference works which we don't yet have content on, and giving the thanks, and rewards, whatever they might be, to those who create and develop such content. I am starting a discussion at Wikipedia talk:Christianity noticeboard#Future contests, and would very much welcome any input from interested parties in how to set it up, determine winners including how many winners, etc.

Christian art

Complete recording

Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe, BWV 22, a cantata by the German composer J.S. Bach, was promoted to GA this month and was written by Gerda Arendt. Many thanks for her continuing work in the area of early 18th Century Church music.

Spotlight

The Spotlight this month turns to the the Jesus work group. The scope of this project includes the life and teachings of the central figure of Christianity, Jesus Christ and aims to write about them in a non-denominational encylopædic style. Top-priority articles include Jesus, Christ, Resurrection of Jesus, and Holy Grail, whereas High-priority articles include Aramaic Language, a former FA, as well as Sermon on the Mount, Lamb of God, and Passion (Christianity). The workgroup has also published two books, covering Christ's final days and the Parables of Jesus. The workgroup has two GAs, Nativity scene, and Jesus in Islam, but unfortunately the flagship article, Jesus was delisted in 2009. It is also responsible for three WP:1.0 articles, and the WikiWork of the project is 4.56, which indicates the "average" article is between Start and C class.

By Gilderien

Calendar
This coming month (end-March through end-April) includes Easter Sunday in Western Christianity and both Lazarus Saturday and Palm Sunday for the Eastern Orthodox Church. Other major feasts in the next month include those of Saint George, Saint Mark the Evangelist, Saint Stanislaus, James, son of Zebedee, and Benedict the Moor.

WikiProject Christianity Newsletter (May 2013)

ICHTHUS

May 2013

Membership report
The parent Christianity WikiProject currently has 363 active members. We would like to welcome our newest members, Pleonic, MJWilliams1998, Iloilo Wanderer, Jkadavoor, Sir Ian and McBenjamin. Thank you all for your interest in this effort. We would be able to achieve nothing here without the input of all of you. If any members, new or not, wish any assistance, they should feel free to leave a message at the Christianity noticeboard or with me or other individual editors to request it.

From the Editor

This month we hear the news that the Bible is to be made into a film after outstanding success of a biblical miniseries on the History Channel, and we have seen the release of Iraqi Pastor Ali Hamzah from his confinement in Iraq.

After last month's spotlight on the Jesus work group, the flagship article, Jesus, was nominated for Good Article status after much work from FutureTrillionaire and History2007, and provisionally passed by the reviewer, although they have requested a second opinion. Our many thanks for the hard work that has gone into restoring this article to a quality piece of work.

This month the second largest denomination of Christianity, the Eastern Orthodox Church, celebrates Easter and the death and resurrection of the Son of God Jesus Christ.

P.S. Please click here to add the new Christianity noticeboard to your watchlist to follow the latest discussions relevant to WikiProject Christianity and subprojects.

Church of the month

Wells Cathedral was this month promoted to GA status. Rodw has appealed for any help project members can give to improve this article for a FA nomination.

By John Carter

Featured content and GA report
Since the last report;

Featured report; Madonna in the Church, by Ceoil, Truthkeeper88, and Johnbod was promoted to Featured Article status. Crucifixion and Last Judgement was promoted to featured picture status, after nomination by Crisco 1492.

Wells Cathedral, by Rodw, Robert of Ghent, by User:Ealdgyth, Christianity in Medieval Scotland, by Sabrebd, and Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, also by Sabrebd were promoted to GA status.

Also these past months, the DYKs on the main page included Lectionary 311, by Leszek Jańczuk; Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn, by Gerda Arendt; Whalsay Parish Church, by Ipigott, Rosiestep, Nvvchar, Dr. Blofeld; Interpretatio Christiana, by Altenmann; First Congregational Church, Salt Lake City, by Orlady; Church of King Charles the Martyr, Royal Tunbridge Wells, by The C of E; First Church in Albany (Reformed), by Daniel Case; Pope Anastasius II, by AbstractIllusions; Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Palma, by Dr. Blofeld, Ipigott, Rosiestep; Colan Church, by Rosiestep, Nvvchar, Ipigott; Notre Dame Cathedral, Papeete, Bloom6132, Church of St. Wenceslaus (New Prague, Minnesota), by Elkman; St. Joseph Catholic Church (San Antonio, Texas), by Gilliam; Doubting Thomas, by Johnbod; Robert of Ghent, by Ealdgyth; and Holy Trinity Church, Holdgate, by Peter I. Vardy. Our profoundest thanks and congratulations to all those involved!

Christian art

This depiction of the Crucifixion and Last Judgement was painted by Dutch artist Jan van Eyck and promoted to Featured Picture this month.

Spotlight

SPOTLIGHT

This month, we turn our attention to the Encyclopedic articles sub-group, which aims to provide "a collection point for lists of articles contained in other reference sources relating to Christianity, which could serve as a basis for developing our own content". Created by John Carter, it is primarily a list of links, red or otherwise, for subjects which have an article in the reference works listed therein. This serves as a very useful list if any project members are "stuck for what to do" and there remains lots of potential for articles developed from this list.

By Gilderien

Calendar
This coming month (end-April through end-May) includes Easter Sunday for the Eastern Orthodox Church. Other major feasts in the next month include those of Matthias the Apostle, The Venerable Bede, and Empress Helena.

Help requests
Please let us know if there are any particular areas, either individual articles or topics, which you believe would benefit from outside help from a variety of other editors. We will try to include such requests in future issues.

Orphaned non-free media (File:Bakersfield flag.gif)

Thanks for uploading File:Bakersfield flag.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:01, 24 May 2013 (UTC)

WP:FOOD Needs You!

Hi there Presidentman! I've noticed you have yourself listed as a member of the Food and Drink Wikiproject. Unfortunately it looks like the project has been slowly sliding into inactivity except for a couple of people. That makes me a sad potato, and nobody likes a sad potato amirite?

If you'd like to turn my frown upside down, can you do two small things?

First off, go here and add {{Tick}} (checkY) next to your name if you're still part of the project.

Second, go to the project talkpage and participate in a discussion about how to make the project more active, and how to go about making articles in our area of interest a lot better.

You don't want to make me cry, do you? Potatoes have a lot of eyes you know. So come on, join in! :)

Changes to SuggestBot's suggestions

We have changed the number of suggested articles and which categories they are selected from. The number of stubs has been greatly reduced, the number of articles needing sources doubled, and two new categories added (orphans and unencyclopaedic articles). We have also modified the layout of the suggestions and added sortable columns with various types of information about each article. The first two columns are:

Views/Day
Daily average number of views an article's had over the past 14 days.
Quality
Predicted article quality on a 1- to 3-star scale. Placing your cursor over the stars should give you a pop-up describing the article's quality (Low/Medium/High), current assessment class, and predicted assessment class.

The method we use to predict article quality also allows us to assess whether an article might need specific types of work in order to improve its quality. The work needed might not correspond to cleanup tags added to the article, since our method is not based on those. We have added five columns reflecting this work assessment, where a red X indicates improvement is needed. Placing your cursor over an X should give you a pop-up with a short description of the work needed. The five columns seek to answer the following five questions:

Content
Is more content needed?
Headings
Does this article have an appropriate section structure?
Images
Is the number of illustrative images about right?
Links
Does this article link to enough other Wikipedia articles?
Sources
For its length, is there an appropriate number of citations to sources in this article?

SuggestBot picks articles in a number of ways based on other articles you've edited, including straight text similarity, following wikilinks, and matching your editing patterns against those of other Wikipedians. It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. We appreciate that you have signed up to receive suggestions regularly, your contributions make Wikipedia better — thanks for helping!

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please let us know on SuggestBot's talk page. Regards from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker. -- SuggestBot (talk) 23:38, 27 May 2013 (UTC)
