UPSL Editor

Hello, Red Jay. I explained on December 10 my edits. It was TheScottDL who kept reverting my edits which I explained. 2 items on the article: USASA amateur leagues are attributed pyramid level 5(or lower if the league has internal promotion/relegation). Secondly, the UPSL appears to have internal promotion and relegation, not promotion up to the pro division and relegation down to the championship division. Both divisions are within the UPSL, therefore the promotion/relegation is 'internal'. I will leave a summary of this statement on the article talk page. Loftybunch1 (talk) 03:05, 22 December 2016 (UTC)

That makes sense. I should have edited from my account and shouldn't have undone his edits, but rather created new edits with summaries. He and I do seem to have a disagreement about the pyramid level of the league, perhaps you could weigh in on course of action. He had been listing league as level 4 while I was changing the listing to level 5 (only levels 1-3 are official, below levels are de facto). PDL and NPSL are listed as level 4, which is not official but the consensus has been that these leagues are level 4 in quality. Other USASA elite leagues are listed as level 5, and after a source was cited referring to the league as level 5, he began deleting the level with the justification that nothing below 3 is official anyways. By this standard, PDL, NPSL and other USASA leagues would not list a level, but they do(except for certain exceptions). Do you have advise on how Wikipedia would normally treat a de facto vs "not official" argument? It is clear that the consensus from the community has been to include the de facto pyramid level for the amateur leagues.Loftybunch1 (talk) 00:05, 24 December 2016 (UTC)

Accepting edits

Hello Red Jay. I was just wondering if there is a reason why you accepted a edit on List of unrelegated association football clubs. That edit has been undone 13 times. Is the information genuinely incorrect or unnecessary? I am just looking for some explanation. Eddie891 (talk) 23:09, 6 February 2017 (UTC)

It says Inter Milan (sic) nearly avoided relegation, which to me means they were relegated. Red Jay (talk) 06:54, 7 February 2017 (UTC)

Date formats

Hi, regarding this edit: you altered "Nov 12 2015 1155Z" to "12 November, 2015 1155Z" stating "date formats per MOS:DATEFORMAT by script" - but you did not leave a date that is compliant with MOS:DATEFORMAT at all. That link shows a table of unacceptable date formats, and the row beginning "3 July, 2001" is directly relevant here. Further up the same section id MOS:TIME which is also relevant here; so the correct format would have been "11:55 UTC, 12 November 2015" with the time first, hours and minutes separated by a colon, timezone written out, comma after the time and not between month and year. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:11, 15 September 2017 (UTC)

Relocation Vernacular

Hello,

Apologies for the petty edit war over insignificant, single-digit characters. I edit copy as a vocation and tend to be a little overzealous when it comes to protecting the English language. Perhaps I can provide some clarity, so you can see where I’m coming from.

All of the words employed in the article can be synonymous informally, but some of them have clear and dissimilar definitions when used with proper style.

Migrate and move are analogous in meaning and imply a generally domestic, physical change in location. They lack permanence and specificity. In contrast, immigration and emigration describe the act of permanently changing one’s nationality, as well as their physical location. Specifically, immigration refers to joining a nation, while emigration is the act of leaving a nation.

The Oxford English, Webster’s, and Cambridge dictionaries all carry the same definitions for these terms in both British and American English. The same goes for various style guides. I can provide sources as well a diploma for a Bachelor’s degree in English literature if necessary.

Now, which of these words best describes Larry Sanders? Larry Sanders permanently changed his location from one nation to another and became a citizen in his new country. In context, we’re describing him joining rather than leaving a country, and therefore he immigrated.

Again, I know the debate here is petty, but being that Wikipedia employs formal grammar and style rules, there is a correct answer here. There’s the longest explanation for a couple of letters you will ever see, and I hope it clears things up. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ohgoshhi (talkcontribs) 13:20, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, it is a while since I made the change. If I remember correctly I changed it to try to avoid the sentence being UK-centric for an American born subject. My thinking being that from a American POV he emigrated whereas in the UK he immigrated. The subtlety of the differences was lost on me. As I could see another editor becoming involved I thought I would try a different approach. Red Jay (talk) 16:28, 24 November 2017 (UTC)

Spelling on Nazi Party

Hi there. The Nazi Party article is tagged for use of British English so I changed Program back to Programme. I know it looks fishy as it recently got changed by a blocked IP and also that the linked article has a title using "Program" in American English. Nonetheless we should try to be consistent within the article, even if we can't be consistent between articles.

As a reader I find that my brain barely registers the difference between the two spellings, except when I am looking out for it, but if it bothers you then maybe it should be discussed further. It is weird that we have one article in British English and one in American English on related topics but I don't think it is against the rules. Maybe National Socialist Program should adopt British English for consistency? Personally, I'm not bothered enough to propose it but I'd probably support it if somebody else did. --DanielRigal (talk) 13:59, 24 March 2018 (UTC)

Hi, Red Jay. You are cordially invited to join the Life on Mars WikiProjects! We're a group of editors working to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to Life on Mars (TV series) and its spin off Ashes to Ashes (TV series). We've noticed that you have an interest in the field, and may be interested in joining Wikipedia's dedicated collaborative effort.

We look forward to working with you in the project!

No need to delate the whole page, just rewrite it, that was very disruptive editing, not only that, my previous citations were removed, you should view the editing history instead of destroying the article thank you. Govvy (talk) 16:48, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

It's easier to keep all comments to one talk page, anyway, I didn't mean to be rude or anything, but I shall try and go through and rewrite what's there. Next time please review the history edits of a page before deciding on what changes to make, cheers. P.S. It really is easier to keep and log all talk page comments, especially if like me that someone is going to reply right back. Govvy (talk) 17:05, 28 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Red Jay. You added a copyvio tag to this article some time ago, but did not indicate where it had been copied from. I cannot find any site with the same text (including looking at the old website on the web archive from 2016, when that text was added). Do you recall where you thought it was from? Cheers, Number 57 15:12, 13 August 2019 (UTC)

I cannot find where it could have been taken from. I think it may have been the style that made me suspicious. Red Jay (talk) 15:59, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
I suspect that as it has "TAFC History by Robbie Morris" at the bottom, it was added by this chap (the club's secretary and programme editor), in which case I suspect he probably wrote it himself. Are you ok with me removing the tag in the absence of any definitive proof of it being a copyvio? It obviously needs a fair bit of cleanup though. Number 57 20:39, 13 August 2019 (UTC)
No problem. Red Jay (talk) 05:23, 14 August 2019 (UTC)

Categories

Hello. Would you mind not removing clubs from the county categories. Even if the club's own category is in the county one, it's still good for all the club to be kept at the county level so that readers can find the entire group of clubs without having to delve into all the subcategories. (Similar to us keeping all the clubs in the England-level category). Cheers, Number 57 17:23, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

I had thought we avoided pages appearing in subcategories, but if that is okay policy-wise, it'll save me a job. Red Jay (talk) 17:26, 20 March 2020 (UTC)
There is a concept called non-diffusing categories (WP:DUPCAT), where articles can be both in the category and subcategories. Cheers, Number 57 17:28, 20 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi Red Jay

why did you change the volleyball medals and prevented Russia from Soviet Union Medals? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mohamed Khedr Abdelaal (talkcontribs) 18:45, 11 April 2020 (UTC)

I communicated with FIVB

Hey Red Jay

i Communicated with FIVB and they reply below and they confirming to me that USSR medals and RUS are combined together. so you should correct the medal tables based on FIVB(the official body of volleyball).

Quote

"Dear Mohamed, Thank you for your interest in volleyball. Indeed, the titles and medals won by the USSR are included in the total winnings of the Russian National Team. I hope this helps.

With kind regards,

Mr. Larry CARREL FIVB Volleyball Project Manager FEDERATION INTERNATIONALE DE VOLLEYBALL « Château Les Tourelles » Edouard-Sandoz 2-4 1006 Lausanne/Switzerland Tel. +41 21 345 35 35 Fax +41 21 345 35 45 larry.carrel@fivb.com www.fivb.com"

Thanks and best regards Mohamed Khedr

Please fell free to change it back yourself. I would suggest adding your communication to the talk pages where you are changing. If the FIVB say Russia = USSR that is their prerogative, but I suspect people on Wikipedia would like to see that. All the best Red Jay (talk) 13:49, 14 April 2020 (UTC)

Thank you

Thank you for the comment on my talk page! Looking forward to many contributions.

Your edit on Sunderland

Hi,

I had to revert the edit you did on the Sunderland page. You said mining was not mentioned in the article, not accurate - the Durham Miners' Association is mentioned, also, there is a colliery wheel within crest.

Just writing to you because figured you'd find that interesting.

This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". county of Cleveland

It existed multiple sources. Chocolateediter (talk) 16:02, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Not with that name, only Durham was of the form County ‘Name’ and it would also have a capital ‘C’. Please take to talk. Red Jay (talk) 16:06, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Alright sorting it leave it for some minute and I’ll have fixed it. Chocolateediter (talk) 16:14, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Is that better or would you like “Cleveland (county)” it is one of the redirects currently, I can just swap it round again. Chocolateediter (talk) 16:22, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

“county Cleveland” is just the shortest of three so I used it for links. Chocolateediter (talk) 16:25, 6 January 2021 (UTC)

Mario Cecchini

Hi-I started an article about an Italian Roman Catholic bishop Mario Cecchini who died recently; Roman Catholic bishops are notable. However, when I typed in the wikipedia pr0jects in the talk page about Bishop Mario Cecchini, a page about some Roman philosopher name Mario Cecchini. And this page was protected by yourself. This is very confusing. Thank you-RFD (talk) 23:40, 13 January 2021 (UTC)

Hey mate, I added a couple tags to Boldon Community Association F.C. as part of WP:NPP's November backlog drive. Hi there. Regarding the hyphens at Poya Asbaghi: "He fled as a one-year-old boy" would need hyphens, "He fled when he was one year old" does not. Kind regards, Robby.is.on (talk) 11:10, 26 April 2022 (UTC)
