Q&A

Hello:

Like Elkman, who just welcomed you, I am a member of the NRHP Project, which you can join (if you like) by going to Wikipedia:WikiProject_National_Register_of_Historic_Places and adding your name to the list.

Feel free to ask questions. I'm a relative newbie and Elkman and several other members of the NRHP Project have taken a lot of time helping me along, so feel free to ask questions, as I'm just passing on their kindness. One of the things that confused me when I started is that there are two ways to have conversations on Wikipedia -- some conversations will take place with A putting a message on B's talk page and B responding by putting a message on A's talk page, so that the two halves of the discussion are in different places. I prefer to have the conversation in one place or another, so I'll add this page to my watchlist and will be able to see your responses here.

Forgive me if i am too basic and certainly ask if I confuse.

Your questions: I am new to Wikipedia and am seeking assistance. I created a new page User:SCPS70458/Camp_Salmen_House. I could find no specific template to use, so used a general template. I then posted a request for feedback and was directed to the templates for this project.

I have now included the template but cannot figure out how to move the TOC.

Maybe I'm dense, but I don't understand "TOC". If you mean how to move it into article space from your user space:

1. Check to see if the article already exists (it doesn't)
2. Click "Move" near the top of the page
3. Specify the new name and the reason on the page that opens and click Save.
4. Then go to the appropriate parish listing, see National_Register_of_Historic_Places_listings_in_Louisiana and
5. put the photo there
6. make sure that the link is now a bluelink, which it should be now that you've created the article. If the name is different, it may require piping. The general rule is that the name in the second column of the list should be the actual NHRP name, even if it's a little different from the name you chose for the article.

I also am unhappy with the photo quality. I agree, "Camp Salmen House 2004.jpg" is not great -- it's too small. But the other two are fine

I am not sure what is the proper size to convert to before uploading. The originals are large. Upload them at the highest resolution you have -- a Wiki Commons image can be as big as 100mB, which is almost certainly more than you have. The Wiki software is very good at providing the right size images on the fly. By the way, let me encourage you to load them onto Wiki Commons, at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Upload, rather than Wikipedia. Commons is the general repository for media.

There are a number of National Register places in my area that I would like to work on and this is my learning tool.

OK, I fixed the infobox generator. (I goofed up when I implemented a new feature.) Basically, I've written a set of scripts on my Web server that let you query the National Register database by property name, city, or county (parish in Louisiana). You can find the infobox generator at [1] the query by city generator at [2], and the query by parish generator at [3]. It's easier to get the information from the database than to generate all that information by hand.

I also took the liberty of updating your article at User:SCPS70458/Camp Salmen House. (I hope you don't mind.) You asked why File:Camp Salmen House 2004.jpg didn't look good in the infobox. That's because the infobox displays the picture at 250 pixels wide. Generally, though, you should upload your pictures at a high resolution, like 1600x1200 or more. The MediaWiki software will scale it. Actually, I noticed that you uploaded File:Bayou Liberty 2004.JPG at 1920x2560 pixels, which is fine. Since the picture with the plywood on the back scales better in the infobox, I flipped the pictures around. You could always reupload the picture of the front of the house and change them around again. Finally, I made a few minor adjustments to standardize the article's appearance. Section level headings usually have two equal signs around them (like ==References==), unless there are subsections. The "References" section goes before "External Links".

As far as the content of the article goes, I think you did a good job with it. You've cited your references properly (although I think you pasted the link for a different nomination PDF for the reference, so I changed it to the one in the external links section). The article gives a good context about what the house looks like and why it's historic. I'd be happy to see more NRHP articles like this.

TOC and Talk

Hello, again.

Sorry I missed TOC -- duh -- I should have understood that. Anyway, the TOC is generated automatically when an article has more than three headings -- see WP:TOC for details of how to control its presence and location. The problem you have is that articles don't generally start with a heading and the TOC is automatically placed before the first heading. I've taken the liberty of fixing it on User:SCPS70458/Camp Salmen House -- Since I took out the initial heading you had at the top, there were only three headings, and, therefore, no TOC, so I added one at the end to show you where it would go.....

Generally, if you want to leave me a message or start a new conversation, you use the other person's talk page, not my user page -- click on the word "talk" in their signature. I see you did that with Elkman, so maybe you just hit my user page by mistake -- no big deal. But, as I said, I prefer to keep conversations in one place, so you can reply here. Most of us watch the talk pages of others with whom we've exchanged comments. Although it seems a little cumbersome, it actually works pretty well.

You're certainly welcome for the help -- we all help each other with various details from time to time and try to be encouraging to newbies -- I'm just passing along some of what I've received from all sorts of people here. . . . . Francois Cousin House (Slidell, Louisiana)

I saw your request for someone to look at Francois Cousin House (Slidell, Louisiana) at the NRHP talk page, so I did. I think it looks very good, especially for a first article. My main suggestion is to add more references if possible - for example the agreement to raise the house needs a ref. Ruhrfisch _><>°^° 02:50, 1 December 2009 (UTC)

coords

Could you take a shot at adding the coords to Camp Salmen House and one or both of the two Francois Cousins houses? I know that all three came out of NRIS somewhere west of Houston, so that was no help.

I see that you blanked them out of the former, but left the NRIS numbers on the Cousins house. It's always a good idea to hit the coords link and take a look at the map -- you'll see that the Cousins House is shown in Texas.

Boy is that intimidating. I think I got it right. Google map didn't have the location quite right, so I adjusted to the true location. I had copied that last coding from the St. Tammany Parish Historic Register Listings overall page. After you confirm that I did this correctly, I will go back and correct that page. I wish there we a central place to find instructions. I am not sure what 'banners' to use etc. I am counting on help from people like to you to teach me. File permission problem with File:Camp Salmen House 2004.jpg
