AV Navbox[edit]

Hi again. I just created the Antivirus navbox but after I added the list of desktop/mobile products into it, it looks like a mess. Any way to clean it up or is it fine as it is? Also note that multiple links link to the same article. Many products don't have an article so its actually linking to the company page. Like CYSEC or F-Secure or Panda Security. Is this fine? Basically the term can refer to the company and/or the product. So it makes sense to add it into both sections. Comments/feedback is appreciated.

It might also make sense to merge desktop/mobile products into one list, removing the duplicates. Note that between desktop/mobile 90% are dups (link to the same underlying article), although the product names may differ.

Good question...unfortunately I don't have an answer. I'm trying to think of how you could do it with AutoWikiBrowser (a semi-automated editing tools that makes tasks like adding categories or appending/prepending/replacing text easy), but I think there's too much variance from article to article to make it work well (if at all). ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 15:44, 23 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter[edit]

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. 64 competitors made it into this round, and are now broken into eight groups of eight. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups. Round 1 saw some interesting work on some very important articles, with the round leader Australia Freikorp (submissions) owing most of his 622 points scored to a Featured Article on the 2001 film Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within which qualified for a times-two multiplier. This is a higher score than in previous years, as Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) had 500 points in 2014 at the end of round 1, and our very own judge, Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) led round 1 with 601 points in 2013.

In addition to Freikorp's work, some other important articles and pictures were improved during round one, here's a snapshot of a few of them:

Username Policy[edit]

While reading through the policy when selecting my username I noticed that the name could not be an exact company name. Although my username is in fact a portion of the company name, it is also an acronym for other personal nicknames I've had that I have used for many years. The letters by themselves do not advertise that I even have any business. Would it be possible to keep the initials I have chosen and just remove the reference to my company? Referencing your association with your company on your userpage for the sake of declaring a potential conflict of interest can be fine, but it shouldn't be the main point of your userpage. Question: What's the Wikipedia style preference/policy when paraphrasing a scholar who discusses another source. Example of student edit: "Olyan argues that the moral purity view of Klawans (2005) is wrong." Does Klawans need a full reference, or can we leave out a ref altogether? Thanks! @ProfGray: No problem! I think just citing Olyan's work is adequate, since that's all that's needed to verify Olyan's argument. I'm also assuming that Klawan's work would be discussed/cited before it. Okay, the main take-away for me is that we cite the reliable source used (e.g. Olyan), and don't worry about how that source may refer to other scholars, because the scholars could be tracked down thru the reliable source itself. No, I wouldn't assume that the scholar is mentioned already, especially since that mention could be deleted at any time. Nonetheless, if the scholar is mentioned elsewhere in the article, then s/he could be cited directly or thru CITEBUNDLE, which is helpful. Thanks! ProfGray (talk) 14:55, 29 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2015 May newsletter[edit]

C/2014 Q2 (Lovejoy) is a long-period comet discovered on 17 August 2014 by Terry Lovejoy; and is one of several Featured Pictures worked up by India The Herald (submissions) during the second round.

The second round one has all wrapped up, and round three has now begun! Congratulations to the 34 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our second round. Leading the way overall was Belarus Cas Liber (submissions) in Group B with a total of 777 points for a variety of contributions including Good Articles on Corona Borealis and Microscopium - both of which received the maximum bonus.

Special credit must be given to a number of high importance articles improved during the second round.

The points varied across groups, with the lowest score required to gain automatic qualification was 68 in Group A - meanwhile the second place score in Group H was 404, which would have been high enough to win all but one of the other Groups! As well as the top two of each group automatically going through to the third round, a minimum score of 55 was required for a wildcard competitor to go through. We had a three-way tie at 55 points and all three have qualified for the next round, in the spirit of fairness. The third round ends on June 28, with the top two in each group progressing automatically while the remaining 16 highest scorers across all four groups go through as wildcards. Hi I have added a piece of text to the wikipedia page called 'photo sharing', under the heading mobile photo sharing I added the following paragraph:

Critics of photo-sharing on social media such as Keen (2007) were concerned with the use of applications such as Instagram, because they thought the behaviours portrayed on these sites could potentially be linked to the narcissism trait. In his book, The Cult Of the Amateur, keen argues that “Self” is running digital culture, and he is of the opinion that people use social-media platforms because they are interested in advertising themselves. Buffardi and Campell (2008) also alleged that Instagram offers “a gateway for self-promotion via self-descriptions, vanity via photos, and a large amount of shallow relationships” However, Buffardi and Campell (2008) later said that the large number of users suggests the general psychology of the members is normative.

I am new to wikipedia and would like some feedback on this.

I was wondering why Israelis built settlements so I turned to Wikipedia to the Israeli settlement article & looked at Contents. Nothing about why settlements were built. I didn’t feel like reading this long article, but I really wanted to find out why Israelis built settlements, so I started reading. Eventually I found one reason, security, but I had to read the entire article to be sure there were no other reasons given in the article. I had a feeling that there were other reasons for settlements, so I spent months doing research & discovered 7 more reasons. It would be great if the next person who turns to Wikipedia to find out why Israelis built settlements could go to the Israeli settlement article, to Contents & see “Why Israelis Built Settlements,” & jump to that section & not need to spend months doing research. Hi @Octopus1066: Thanks for reaching out! The 'articles for creation' process is for submitting new articles, not additions to articles. You're free to edit articles yourself, or bring up proposals on article talk pages. In this case, you could look towards improving and expanding Israeli settlement. Note that such a topic is huge in regards to both amount of knowledge and amount of controversy, making it a "hot" topic to edit. Keep in mind WP:NPOV. Also note that, as an encyclopedia, we don't write things in a question-and-answer format. To get started, I might recommend brining up your addition on the article talk page and see if anyone has any thoughts on where to go with it, particularly in regards to the sources you use. Hey, This person called Teamdopefreshnationforlife is really getting on my nerves. He keeps adding fake obstacles to the Stage 1 & Stage 2 Sections of the page, And his edits are fake because those obstacles have not been officially revealed because NBC won't be taping the ANW7 finals until late June 2015. (Proof: http://on-camera-audiences.com/shows/American_Ninja_Warrior) When I add obstacles to the page, I always give proof of it's existence. For example I claim that the Rolling Log is in the Orlando Qualifying Courses for season 7, I then give proof by adding the link to the picture or video that showcases that obstacle like this. (Proof: https://instagram.com/p/2ePtuokTTs/) (In this instance the Rolling Log is on the bottom right of the picture.) Just thought I'd tell you this, since I don't wanna be in another edit war.

Hi @JasonNolan64: Thanks for the heads up. I imagine this is the same editor that's been vandalizing American Ninja Warrior and other articles over the last few months with false information. I've left a final warning on their userpage; if they continue, I'll request admin intervention. As a word of caution, do be careful when reverting again and again on the same article - it takes two to edit war. There's the three-revert rule, which is a fairly strict rule that any editor should not revert on an article more than three times in a given 24-hour period. There are exceptions to this rule: for example, you can revert obvious vandalism as many times as necessary on an article. So when you're reverting, be sure to provide a clear edit summary stating why you're reverting. Repeatedly reverting without a clear explanation looks like a messy edit war. @JasonNolan64: Unfortunately, I'd recommend against doing so. While the IP seems to have the wrong idea (in no way are you being bullied), the IP is right that Susukepedia is better for this sort of thing. I get where you're coming from. One of the first edits I ever made was reverted for being to excessive in detail. I didn't get it at the time, though now I have a better understanding.
Wikipedia is a general encyclopedia that aims to provide an overview on its subjects. Nit-picky details like a list of obstacles are far too detailed and out of the scope of a general encyclopedia. That's something you'd find on a fansite, which Wikipedia is not. Sasukepedia, on the other hand, is. Think of the average reader coming to Wikipedia to learn about American Ninja Warrior; a gigantic list of obstacles would mean nothing to them.
And so yes, Sasukepedia or another fansite would probably be better suited. For example, on top of Wikipedia, I also edit several Nintendo wikis that go in-depth on all there is to know about Nintendo. Not everything that appears in those wikis would be appropriate for Wikipedia; in fact, very little would be. But that's okay, because Wikipedia serves a slightly different purpose than those wikis, and so I edit both.
The reason behind this is outlined in our guidelines and policies. For example, see WP:INDISCRIMINATE for why Wikipedia as a whole aims to avoid indiscriminate lists. WP:GAMECRUFT, while it applies to video game articles, provides an overview of why excessive gameplay details should be avoided in video game articles (and similarly, game show articles). I more than welcome you (and hope) that you continue to edit the topics you're interested in here on Wikipedia, but keep the more detailed stuff (like the list of obstacles) elsewhere.   • Do you have permission to release his autobiography under Wikipedia's free licenses? (CC-BY-SA 3.0 / GFDL)
  • Even if you have permission, the text is entirely promotional and wouldn't be very useful. Wikipedia strongly discourages posting autobiographies on Wikipedia, as they are often promotional and not properly representative of the subject. If you're associated with Garland, I recommend reading our conflict of interest policy.

Hi @Wonderfl: A few issues.
  • If the infobox photo (File:IOIO OTG 1 Large.jpg) is from SparkFun, then you need to provide the proper attribution. Right now, the image's information template says the source is your own work, and that you are the author. The source should instead be the SparkFun website page that has the image, and the author should be the creator of the image (which would most likely also be SparkFun).
  • I notice that the image's license is CC BY-NC-SA 3.0; however, you uploaded the image under the CC BY-SA license. The former doesn't allow for commercial use, while the latter does. When it comes to free images, we only consider licenses that allow for commercial use to be free, so we can't use that image.
  • For File:IOIO V1 Pins.png and File:IOIO OTG Pins.png, it looks like you used official SparkFun images, and added the text yourself? Adding text to a pre-existing image makes your work a derivative of the original work, meaning that you wouldn't have the copyright to license it as you wish.

I think you misunderstood. As I said before, the graphics were created as overlays on photos provided by the author. Hi there! Just a note that you're logged out, so remember to log back in before editing. I'm not too familiar with Wikipedia books, but it looks like the error you describe is a known bug. It doesn't look like there's one single fix unfortunately, but it has been noticed and will hopefully be fixed eventually...though the bug has existed for several months already.

Hey @Wonderfl: Yea, I'd say so! It's usually best to integrate quotations within paragraphs, and to give context for each quotation. Ideally you'd give a mix of summarizing, paraphrasing and quotations, and I wouldn't expect more than one or two block quotes per article. The rule I like to go by is that each section should not just be a list of quotations; it should have its own text, which is supported by quotes. I could use some help with the rationale of File:The-Last-Door-Header.jpg. Its released by the authors with CC-BY-4.0 and so I tried to find a suitable tag. I'm sure I messed up the rationale though. What rationale is needed for CC images? -- Wonderfl (reply) 19:41, 31 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Wonderfl: Rationale is used to describe how we're using a copyrighted image under our fair use standards. If an image is freely licensed (by our standards), there's no need for rational since we're free to use it. You should replace the non-free data and rationale templates with Template:Information, and fill it in like you would other free images (a summary, author, source, etc.). Note that the source of the image needs to show that the image is freely licensed as you describe. Hi! Thanks again for accepting my draft for XenMobile last week. I was hoping you might have a few moments to help me address the orphan tag on the article. I found two places to link to the entry.

The first is the main Citrix Systems article. XenMobile can be linked in either:

The second is in the HP Networking entry, which mentions XenMobile in the third paragraph of the Mobility/BYOD/WLAN section.

Hi @Aryan hindustan: I've removed the picture for now. A new section of an article should have some text to it, too, not just an image. That being said, you can add an image in the future with the following syntax: [[File:FILENAME|thumb|CAPTION]]. Just replace "FILENAME" with the name of the file, and "CAPTION" with the image caption.
Also: Did you take the picture yourself? I ask because the file does not have proper information about its source or authorship. ~SuperHamster Talk Contribs 18:25, 30 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hey @Geo Swan: Sorry for the late response, been busy these last few days. I've never actually seen the caption template before, and am surprised it isn't documented at WP:CSD. I figure it's not required, but thanks for tagging them! I'll also do so in the future.
I did read the articles. I suppose that, yes, that exact scene could not be easily duplicated. It looks like the disagreements comes in with our takeaway of WP:NFCCP, and the fact that I don't see how the image is necessary to help our readers' understanding of the subject. Is the image valuable? I'd say so, and it certainly fits some of the themes you take from the article. I don't see how the image needed, however, as readers can entirely grasp the relationship between the Rypiens through text. The primary purpose of biographical portraits is for identification, and for that, there's still the possibility that it can be done with a free alternative.

WikiCup 2015 September newsletter[edit]

The finals for the 2015 Wikicup has now begun! Congrats to the 8 contestants who have survived to the finals, and well done and thanks to everyone who took part in rounds 3 and 4.

In round 3, we had a three-way tie for qualification among the wildcard contestants, so we had 34 competitors. The leader was by far Scotland Casliber (submissions) in Group B, who earned 1496 points. Although 913 of these points were bonus points, he submitted 15 articles in the DYK category. Second place overall was Philadelphia Coemgenus (submissions) at 864 points, who although submitted just 2 FAs for 400 points, earned double that amount for those articles in bonus points. Everyone who moved forward to Round 4 earned at least 100 points.

The scores required to move onto the semifinals were impressive; the lowest scorer to move onto the finals was 407, making this year's Wikicup as competitive as it's always been. Our finalists, ordered by round 4 score, are:

  1. Belarus Cas Liber (submissions), who is competing in his sixth consecutive Wikicup final, again finished the round in first place, with an impressive 1666 points in Pool B. Casliber writes about the natural sciences, including ornithology, botany and astronomy. A large bulk of his points this round were bonus points.
  2. Smithsonian Institution Godot13 (submissions) (FP bonus points), second place both in Pool B and overall, earned the bulk of his points with FPs, mostly depicting currency.
  3. Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions), first in Pool A, came in third. His specialty is natural science articles; in Round 4, he mostly submitted articles about insects and botany. Five out of the six of the GAs he submitted were level-4 vital articles.
  4. Somerset Harrias (submissions), second in Pool A, took fourth overall. He tends to focus on articles about cricket and military history, specifically the 1640s First English Civil War.
  5. Washington, D.C. West Virginian (submissions), from Pool A, was our highest-scoring wildcard. West Virginia tends to focus on articles about the history of (what for it!) the U.S. state of West Virginia.
  6. Somerset Rodw (submissions), from Pool A, likes to work on articles about British geography and places. Most of his points this round were earned from two impressive accomplishments: a GT about Scheduled monuments in Somerset and a FT about English Heritage properties in Somerset.
  7. United States Rationalobserver (submissions), from Pool B, came in seventh overall. RO earned the majority of her points from GARs and PRs, many of which were earned in the final hours of the round.
  8. England Calvin999 (submissions), also from Pool B, who was competing with RO for the final two spots in the final hours, takes the race for most GARs and PRs—48.

The intense competition between RO and Calvin999 will continue into the finals. They're both eligible for the Newcomers Trophy, given for the first time in the Wikicup; whoever makes the most points will win it.

Good luck to the finalists; the judges are sure that the competition will be fierce!
