drafted request[edit]

(draft, not exactly as was sent) To the National Register Reference Team:

I and other volunteers who develop articles about NRHP places in the online wikipedia have identified a number of apparent typos or other errors in the NRIS system. Typos in names of places listed on the National Register cause various difficulties. Although we believe we have caught and corrected these typos for our basic work describing these places in wikipedia, the errors cause mis-matches in automated processes that we also seek to use. For example, a typo can cause a place to be omitted from some automatically generated wikipedia listings of places having similar names, which we want to use to assist readers in finding the specific article they are looking for. And, outside of wikipedia, we note that the typos appear to cause errors to be echoed with the mispelling in other webpage systems that also use NRIS public domain data, such as those of http://nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com's listings, and the similar listings at www.archiplanet.org.

I would like by this email to report to you the following specific apparent 20 errors. I am hoping that you may be able to correct them in the NRIS system and let me know that they have been fixed. Please do contact me with any questions. Although we have identified more problems like these, I thought it best to try to just provide one batch of 20 to address. Also, I would like to receive any feedback from you about how best to make future reports about other problems.

1. NRIS includes "Truck Line Bridge No. 1" (and this is echoed in NRHP.COM) for the bridge actually named "Trunk Line Bridge No. 1, also known as Peshekee River Bridge, in Marquette County, Michigan. That it is supposed to be Trunk not Truck is clear in Michigan Department of Transportation's webpage about this bridge and in the National Register's own Highway Bridges in Michigan MPS document.

2-4. Three church properties mispelled with "Epsicopal" in the name, where it should be as "Episcopal":

  1. 98000130 Calvary Epsicopal Church, in McDonough, NY
  2. 98001395 Emmanuel Epsicopal Church, in Elmira, NY
  3. 84002213 St. Thomas Epsicopal Church, in Taunton, MA

5-7. Three more church properties mispelled with "Epicopal" in the name, where it should be as "Episcopal":

  1. Bloomville Methodist Epicopal Church (Bloomville, New York)
  2. St. Barnabas Epicopal Church (Troy, New York)
  3. St. Mary's Epicopal Church (Flandreau, South Dakota)

8. "Bethlehem Lutheran Church" in Aitkin, Minnesota, misspelled in NRIS as "Bethelhem Lutheran Church", refnum 82002928

9. *"Newwark Valley Municipal Building and Tappan-Spaulding Memorial Library", of Newark Valley, NY, in Tioga County, NY, is listed in NRIS, with typo misspelling Newark as Newwark.

10. NRIS includes "Main Street Historic Distrct" for Addison, New York, in which the word "District" is misspelled, omitting an "i".

11. NRIS lists "Hendrikus DuBoris House" in Ulster County new york, when it should be "Hendrikus DuBois House".

12. For "Russell Sage Memorial Church" in Queens, NY, NRIS reports it as: "Russell Sage Sage Memorial Church" with "Sage" repeated. Its NRHP Inventory/Nomination form (available from New York State's system at http://www.oprhp.state.ny.us/hpimaging/hp_view.asp?GroupView=7399 ) shows it as "Russell Sage Memorial Church", also known as "First Presbyterian Church of Far Rockaway".

13-14. In Armstrong County, PA, there are 5 similarly named NRHPs:

    • "Allegheny River Locka and Dam No. 5"
    • "Allegheny River Lock and Dam No. 6"
    • "Allegheny River Lock and Dam No. 7"
    • "Allegheny River Lock and Dam No.8"
    • "Allegheny River Lock and Dam No. 9"

with misspelling/minor edit fixes needed in two. For No. 5, fix typo to spell as "Lock" rather than "Locka". For No. 8, spell as "No. 8" rather than "No.8".

15. The NRIS lists a "State Steet Bridge" in Erie, Kansas, acknowledging that it's on "State St. over Neosho River tributary" — plainly a simple typo for "State Street Bridge".

16. A "Convenanter Church" is listed in Stafford, Kansas, and the Reformed Presbyterian Church of Vernon (in Wisconsin) is listed, at least by http://www.nationalregisterofhistoricplaces.com, with an alternate name of "Convenanter". In the past, "Covenanter" was a common term used by members of the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America for themselves and their church, so "Convenanter" is plainly a typo.

17. The "Neponset Valley Parkway, Metorpolitan Park System of Greater Boston" in Boston. Typo is spelling that should be Metropolitan instead of Metorpolitan.

18. "St. Mildred's Court-West Lexington Avenue Historic Distric t", in Danville, Kentucky, inexplicably has a space in the middle of the last word — i.e. "Distric t" not "District".

19. "Neveda-California-Oregon Railway Locomotive House and Machine Shop" in Reno, Nevada, should be "Nevada" rather than "Neveda".

20. "Gen. Beauregard Equestrian Statue", in New Orleans, Louisiana, listed in NRIS as "Beauregard, Gen., Equestrain Statue", misspelling Equestrian.

Thanks, sincerely yours,

NOT addressed, from the section on Name errors:[edit]

  • (NEED TO CHECK IN NRIS DIRECTLY) NRIS or at least Elkman generator lists "Carll Burr Jr." for what should be termed either the Carll Burr, Jr., House or perhaps "Carll Burr Jr. House", refnum 85002503 in Commack, New York in Suffolk County, New York. Name on NYS registration document is "Carll Burr Jr. House". NRHP.COM gets correctly as "Carll Burr, Jr., House". doncram (talk) 22:15, 7 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • NRIS? / Elkman lists "Van derzee, Cornelius and Agnietje House" on a Van Derzee street in Albany County, New York. I think there probably should be capitalization of Derzee. Am putting into Albany County list as Cornelius and Agnietje Van Derzee House. doncram (talk) 17:50, 10 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • This is not an NRIS problem. NRIS lists various places with # sign in their names, e.g. "Schoolhouse #6" in Albany County, NY. However, this does not work in Wikipedia article names, one goes to the "Schoolhouse" article. So i have to change it to Schoolhouse No. 6, i believe. doncram (talk) 01:09, 11 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

  • NRIS includes "Main Street Historic Distrct" for Addison, New York, in which the word "District" is misspelled, omitting an "i". This causes it to be omitted from some automatically generated pages, such as Elkman's suggested disambiguation for Main Street Historic District, and to be echoed with the mispelling in other automatically generated pages, e.g. NRHP.COM's Steuben County, NY listings. doncram (talk) 16:38, 5 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It was Ralph Adams Cram designed and has Tiffany stained glass windows.
