The Smashing Pumpkins is an American alternative rock band from Chicago, Illinois, formed in 1988 by frontman and guitarist Billy Corgan, bassist D'arcy Wretzky, guitarist James Iha, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin. Corgan is the group's primary composer and the sole constant member since its inception. The current lineup features Corgan, Chamberlin, Iha and guitarist Jeff Schroeder. The band has a diverse, densely layered sound with elements of gothic rock, heavy metal, dream pop, psychedelic rock, progressive rock, and shoegaze, along with electronica in later recordings. One of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s, the Smashing Pumpkins helped popularize alternative rock music, selling 30 million albums worldwide by the end of the decade. In 2000 internal conflicts and diminishing sales led to a break-up. In 2006, Corgan and Chamberlin reconvened to record Zeitgeist. The band's most recent release is Atum: A Rock Opera in Three Acts.
