WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   11:00, 31 May 2018 (UTC)

IP editor removing project templates?

Hello Special:Contributions/107.77.209.135 is removing your project template from select articles. In at least one case, this template was placed by a bot based on membership in a "Protected areas of..." category. Were you aware of these changes? -- DanielPenfield (talk) 10:18, 19 June 2018 (UTC)

I just noticed this as well. I hoped to see an explanation here. This was today's ip Special:Contributions/107.77.206.230. Rmhermen (talk) 03:51, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
And Special:Contributions/107.77.207.41 on June 18 and 19 moving articles from this project to WP:Historic sites. I am leaning to rapid reverting these. I hope the IP communicates with us. Rmhermen (talk) 04:09, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Probably Special:Contributions/107.77.208.216 as well. Although items are more debatable. Rmhermen (talk) 04:20, 21 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi everyone, User talk:107.77.207.41 placed the following message on my talk page in response to a message I placed on their talk page.Regards Cowdy001 (talk) 09:50, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi Cowdy, Sorry I didn't see you reverted that edit on Category:Historical reserves of the Northern Territory or I would have let it be. The reason I changed it is because Wikipedia:WikiProject Protected areas and Category:Protected areas are for environmentally protected areas while Wikipedia:WikiProject Historic sites amd Category:Historic preservation cover historically protected areas. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 107.77.206.230 (talk) 04:18, 21 June 2018 (UTC)

Pleistocene Park size

I wanted to inform you that the Pleistocene Park size is 16 km², not 160 km². In the official site, they clearly say that it's a 16 km² territory. They also say that it's a 20 km² (I think approximately) in the Indiegogo campaign. So it's 16 km², not 160. But this user keeps changing the size to 160, stating that 16 km² is only the size of the fence, but the park is actually 160 km², but she's wrong, because the area inside the fence IS the park. There is no area outside the 16 km² fence that is part of the park. I can't correct it so please tell her to stop. I tried to contact her telling her to show me some evidence that the park is actually 160 km², but she doesn't reply and just keeps changing the size.--Supremo (talk) 01:11, 27 July 2018 (UTC)

Database searches for Protected Areas

I am compiling a list of ways to search if an area is designated (based on IUCN designation). The databases are not always easy to navigate, so I am putting these links here to make it easier. Maybe there is a better place to put this, or maybe this list already exists?

For data basin, to find a new state I used Google with search terms: protected areas in [state] iucn data basin --David Tornheim (talk) 02:11, 29 December 2018 (UTC)

Great list for resources, thanks! Funandtrvl (talk) 23:05, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

IUCN designations removed from 11 articles

An IP deleted the IUCN designations on 11 protected areas: Special:Contributions/107.77.209.97.

I rolled back all those edits yesterday, as I do not believe a reliable source is required for the IUCN designated category.

Aymatth2 agrees. [1].

Another IP showed up and removed them again insisting they could not be restored without a source: Special:Contributions/75.121.59.128.

Can someone with more experience with the IUCN designations please revert the new IP to restore the IUCN designations? I do not want to be accused of edit-warring. --David Tornheim (talk) 09:37, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

It looks like there is yet another IP editor who is deleted IUCN designations: Special:Contributions/107.77.209.181. But some edits by this user are properly referenced. I reverted most of those (except the one about a historic house which I think would not qualify) with a note saying to look here. --David Tornheim (talk) 11:05, 28 December 2018 (UTC)

Two more IP editors doing the same: Special:Contributions/107.77.206.83 and Special:Contributions/2600:387:B:9:0:0:0:AE. I have not reverted any, but I agree with you, unless someone can support to the contrary. Fredlyfish4 (talk) 14:22, 28 December 2018 (UTC)
And another [107.77.209.208]. If the IP find it in the Protected Planet, they add the ref; if not, they delete it. I have been trying to add refs for those that I find in Data Basin that are not in Protected Planet, rather than mass reverting the IP's deletions as before. Some areas like Minidoka National Historic Site are in neither database. Some areas that are in Data Basin, such as Sawtooth National Forest come up as "unassigned". I am not sure what that means. It's also not clear to me why the two databases give different results.
Maybe I should call one of these parks and see what they know. --David Tornheim (talk) 23:50, 29 December 2018 (UTC)
Based off a quick look IUCN's Guidelines for Applying Protected Areas Management Categories it seems that it is upon the individual/organization to apply the categories to a given protected area (also defined within). That category will not appear in a database until an agency reports it to IUCN, but it appears that lack of reporting or assignment of a category does not exclude a protected area from having a category.
And honestly, having worked for U.S. land management agencies, I doubt if anyone, or at least the vast majority of people, at most parks would have any idea what you're talking about if you bring up IUCN categories. Fredlyfish4 (talk) 00:14, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
@Fredlyfish4: Thanks for looking that up. This still seems to be an unanswered question on what is best to do. Maybe we could add a parameter that says, "unofficial designation", so the nitpickers are satisfied? It seems we could use a bigger discussion on how to handle this.
Also, I did find that the "iucn" parameters are not universal among the info box templates, e.g. {{infobox Australian place}} and {{infobox valley}}. I raised the issue at Template_talk:Infobox_Australian_place#iucn_ref.
I am not sure how best to handle this example: Death Valley here which uses the {{infobox valley}}. I don't know if my edit here was an improvement or not--it's not clear whether this parameter should be used with areas that are completely subsumed by an iucn protected area or not. Any thoughts on these other issues? --David Tornheim (talk) 04:03, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
@David Tornheim: I agree that what we should do with protected areas without official designations is not clear. In the case of Death Valley, that article is about the valley itself and not the park per se. There is a separate Death Valley National Park article. Death Valley (the valley itself) is a feature within a protected area, so I think we should keep the IUCN categories and other protected area-type tags on the pages about the protected area itself. The same would apply for geologic, historic, recreation, etc. features of other protected areas (as on Saint Mary Lake, Zion Lodge, Lake Solitude Trail). If there are not separate pages for a specific feature and a protected area then the IUCN category should be on that page (e.g. Mount Ararat). Looking at how the Australian Place infobox is used, that certainly should have an IUCN parameter, but I don't know if it's necessary for the geological infoboxes to have them. Fredlyfish4 (talk) 16:25, 30 December 2018 (UTC)
Thanks for the feedback. --David Tornheim (talk) 23:16, 30 December 2018 (UTC)

@Brian W. Schaller: Any thoughts on this discussion? --David Tornheim (talk) 23:12, 31 December 2018 (UTC)

Bad articles

Hi there, I have been checking out your project articles ... two very long articles stand out. First off, Pleistocene Park: at first I saw that the lead had some text referenced to Facebook, Blogs and YouTube as sources, thought I'd get rid of that, but on closer inspection the entire article is largely sourced from Facebook: it's a shame, as it's a very interesting article, but unfixable regarding sourcing.

Then Tapiche Reserve in Peru: I first noticed a South American species of tree I was working on was listed in that article and though it might have useful info, but the article is misleading and completely un-sourced. As far as I can tell this is a commercial ecolodge, the "native village" in the picture are the tourist accommodations, calling it a "private conservation property" is cute, but in that sense Disneyland is a "paediatric recreation property" and McDonalds is a "gastronomic facilitation franchise" or whatever. Any ecolodge owner can market his property as a "private conservation property". Nothing relevant is sourced, and the text is full of useless external links. As far as some digging on the interwebs shows, the entire thing was written by one Amy H from Minneapolis, who booked a vacation at the facility in 2011 and was well impressed, writing a glowing recommendation on TripAdvisor. This got her in contact with the owner of the property, one Murilo Reis. She also got a Wikipedia account specifically to write that enormous puff piece. I must assume that all the pictures and information here on Wikipedia regarding species inventories, etc... was privately sent to Amy by the owner, Reis, as the information appears unique to the Wikipedia article and in no way can anyone take all those animal pictures and determine all those species in a trip of a few days. It may, and probably is, mostly true, but in no way verifiable. A shame again, because building species distributions from local species inventories is what I do, and I always try to list parks where the species I am working on are protected/can be viewed, but I can only use hard data. This lodge must be something really special, especially tour guide Katoo -a big hit with all the tourists (and there is much to said for retaining the article in reduced form), because looking around on Wikipedia I see links advertising its existence have been added to the articles Iquitos, rainforest and Peruvian Amazon - the one to Iquitos was removed, but someone added the section Iquitos#Natural_reserves_and_zoos in 2014 to include a glowing recommendation (and complain about the locals' habits regarding trash)... thing is that this facility is 400km away from the city, there are a number of real national parks much closer (someone added Allpahuayo-Mishana National Reserve later), and all the information in that article can only be sourced back to Amy H's edits from 2011 onward. I suppose the only reason it is mentioned in the Iquitos article at all is that most foreign lodge guests must travel via the Iquitos airport to get to the location.

I leave the Pleistocene Park stuff to you all. But would appreciate some feedback regarding Tapiche Reserve. Shall I just delete everything un-sourced? Am I being too harsh? I will ping a Peruvian member of your group: @Frank R 1981:

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

No Grand Canyon wikiproject?

I'm posting this here as well as at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Arizona and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Indigenous peoples of North America because it's under the WikiProjects' areas. I was just about to start the GAN review for Grand Canyon (book) and was surprised to not see a Grand Canyon WikiProject, or a task force relevant to one of the three mentioned WPs, on its talk page. I think that as a book on the subject, it may not be deemed relevant to Protected areas/Arizona/Indigenous p. of N. America individually, but that because of the subject matter it was surprising that there's no associated WikiProject to assess its coverage. I would propose a Grand Canyon project/task force myself, but am working a lot in article improvement at the moment. If any of the wikiprojects addressed would consider e.g. collaborating on a task force, I would probably join in, though! Just thought I'd leave the message and the idea. Help a newer user?

Hi! I was wondering if anyone would be interested in taking some new users under their wing. I'm pinging them here (@Piete Brooks and J V Neal:). They're working on a draft of a park in England, Draft:St Matthew's Piece. They seem to be quite eager and the park offhand does look like it's probably notable, it just needs more work to help it better fit Wikipedia's style guidelines. Parks aren't really in my area of interest, so I wanted to reach out here and in another area or two that could also fit their topic.
