The Böda Uprising (Swedish: Bödaupproret) , also known as the Forest Rebellion (Swedish: Skogsupproret)[1] was an uprising regarding the rights of the Gotlanders to the forest.[1] The rebellion was quelled by the Swedish authorities.[2]

Background[edit]

Forest policy[edit]

In the early 1800s, a new forest policy had been implemented by the Swedish Government, where the forest was seen as capital to be improved with long-term plans.[3] In accordance with this policy, the public park in Böda was turned into crown property, with the state claiming full ownership and rights to the forest.[3] In opposition to this new policy was a new perception that the forest was part of a "moral economy".[3]
