In Film -- Worldwide view needed[edit]

I know that there are many coming of age films by French filmmakers, and I am certain some digging will find a nice selection of such films which can be added to this section. I think there's probably a nice compare/contrast between, for example, French films of this genre and the American films. A more worldwide survey of the film literature seems called for here. I will circle back and try to improve this section in this way when I have time. JoGusto (talk) 13:06, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Noi Albinoi, Fucking Amal, Sommersturm, Lilja 4-Ever are examples of coming-of-age films --2A02:1811:EC29:DE00:9815:1E63:FCE2:1431 (talk) 00:01, 18 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

This list France Today list of 6 French coming of age films might be good place to start.[1] I think the French film subsidies that help first time filmmakers get funding for their first films skews production heavily in favor of coming of age films. Lots of French directors struggle to ever get funding for a second film. -- 109.79.174.194 (talk) 05:36, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Basically a list[edit]

This article ought to either add more salient discussion or be changed to a list format.--Scottandrewhutchins (talk) 20:12, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Scottandrewhutchins, I agree. If nobody else gets to it before I do, I'll do a rewrite. I did something similar for Young adult romance literature, taking it from a very similar "listicle". Schazjmd (talk) 20:27, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, Bildungsroman is the conceptual article; this should be a list article. Schazjmd (talk) 16:47, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think this article's list is too long. It's an indiscriminate list if the only qualification is that it depict a teen or young adult maturing. .....I propose using a screening criteria to pick out a shortlist of the most significant films to stay in this article, then move the long list to a new article called "List of films about coming of age". The new list article would be wikilinked in this article. As to the screening criteria to be included, how about:
  • has a RS reference saying that this is a coming of age film
  • The film is itself significant in film history (e.g. was #1 box office film on release, won Oscar, etc)
  • Doesn't repeat an already-used type of film in the list (for example of we have an example of "Small town teen moves to big city" film, we don't need 5 more

What do editors think?OnBeyondZebraxTALK 14:32, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Clarification: yes, I know this is a list article already. I'm suggesting that this main "List of coming of age stories" should be a summary style (WP:Summary style) approach, which gives the reader some quick highlights of COA films. Those who want to dive deeper into the long list can click the link. This way, even if the vetting on the new "List of coming of age films" article is looser it's OK, because the parent article has a concise list.OnBeyondZebraxTALK 14:37, 11 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why do we say “film and television”?[edit]

Film is is a visual storage media. TV and movies can be produced on film, tape, digitally or by other means. The subtitle should be “Movies and TV”. Mfactor (talk) 02:05, 12 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

There is no need to abbreviate television to TV. Way back when there was a consensus to use the term "film" to describe motion pictures or "movies" and since that was established Wikipedia continues to largely favor the term "film" when describing the cinematic arts. -- 109.79.174.194 (talk) 04:56, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

IT[edit]

Are we really serious about "IT" being a coming of age film?

This list is indiscriminate, It and many other books and films should be removed.
Really only books and films that have been highlighted as notable examples of the genre should be listed. Instead the list contains many works that it is hard to be sure are in the genre at all, when it should at least be a defining characteristic. -- 109.79.174.194 (talk) 04:36, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Of course some random listicle on Buzzfeed would go and claim IT is was a coming of age story.[2] -- 109.79.174.194 (talk) 21:08, 11 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
