Following this video essay, the 1980 version appears to be a shorter version and the 1985 version (which the video calls the "novella version" is longer and more fleshed out). If this is correct, the lead needs to be rewritten; if not, another third-party reliable source should be cited. Hijiri 88 (聖やや) 10:08, 14 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I just made an edit as it was very confusing. It was "released as a short novella in 1980 and as an expanded version in 1981. A short story collection of the same name was released in 1985 that includes the novella." Both versions are novellas so the second part is not clear.

There is a PDF out there (thousandworldspart1.pdf) that has both versions. "Nightflyers (Original)" is 23866 words long and "Nightflyers (Novella)" is 32451 words long. The first section (with 7 paragraphs) is the same for both versions. For the second section, the original version starts with "From the hour the Nightflyer slipped into stardrive" and the expanded version has "They made their way slowly down the length". The audiobook for Nightflyers and Other Stories has the expanded version. The Dreamsongs ebook also has the expanded version. Chiok (talk) 10:49, 28 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I have deleted a harsh assessment of this novel by an anonymous editor. Reason: violates Wikipedia's policies about how to write about living people.
