Tyra Was A Supermodel

A supermodel is a highly-paid elite fashion model who usually has a worldwide reputation and often a background in haute couture and commercial modeling. The term took hold in the popular culture of the 1980s and 1990s. (There is a supermodel)

Application The elite models who are given the appellation of "supermodel" often share similar traits. These models are reputable in the fashion industry. In an interview with ET, Janice Dickinson claimed to have coined the term "supermodel" back in 1979, when she was taking every job available. According to her, her agent Monique Pilar of Elite Modeling Agency, asked her, "Janice, who do you think you are? Superman?". She replied saying, "No... I'm a supermodel, honey, and you will refer to me as a supermodel and you will start a supermodel division." Her Weight

I'm having a hard time believing that she weighs 185lbs. I know she is one of the curvy models but 185lbs is ridiculous.

It may not be that far off. I'm 5'10", skinny, male, and weigh somewhere around 155lbs. Add a few pounds for each breast and you're already up to 160-165. Add in the weight from wider hips and the extra bone mass and tissue that goes with that, there's another what? Say 10 lbs.? Now you're in the 170-175 range. Add a few more pounds for muscle mass since I'm betting that she works out a couple times a week at least which is a couple times more than me and you're right in the neighborhood. Um breasts won't weigh even a kilogram, let alone 5!

An average sized breast weighs about 3 lbs. A friend of mine with HUGE breasts (26 DDD) recently had a breast reduction in which 2 lbs were removed from each breast, which brought her down to a 26 D. Supermodel vs Model

Tyra Banks is probably ground zero for the Supermodel or Not a Supermodel debate, so I don't think it is appropriate to refer to her as such in the article. Her High Fashion resume is virtually non-existent. I'd describe her as nothing more than a glorified bikini and bra model, but I think that's a bit too subjective too. Let's just leave it at "model", list her achievments, and let the people decide whether or not she deserves the "Supermodel" moniker.Bogan444 22:46, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

If you look at the Wikipedia Supermodel page, Tyra Banks is listed there. Being a supermodel does not solely mean having lots of high fashion modelling experience, although I would have to say that she probably does differ from the norm in that sense. I would consider her a supermodel because she was a famous model, known for solely her modelling before she did all that reality TV. Many other sources call her a supermodel; just by Googling "Tyra Banks supermodel", you get many articles (not just fan sites) calling Banks a supermodel, including CNN, ABC News, MSNBC, etc.. with all due respect, your definition of "supermodel" isn't all that demanding. Essentially, it would cover almost any famous model. I'm well aware that Banks is sometimes referred to as a "Supermodel", but that tells us nothing as all the models want to be referred to as "Supermodels" and have their people and trolls in the media constantly pimping that angle. And the "supermodel/not a supermodel" debate is quite real. Howard Stern's sound technician, Fred Norris, famously brought the issue to the public forefront when he vigorously disputed the use of the term with regards to Carol Alt during her on air appearance. When I orginally changed it back to "supermodel," it was because I was easily able to find three major media sources (and I stopped at three, I could have easily added more) that refer to Banks as a "supermodel." Why is this article protected?

I see no acknowledgment of the fact that this article is protected, other than the absence of "edit" links and the alternate text for the "view source" tab, which reads, "This page is protected."

Prior to graduating in 1991, she wanted to give modeling a try. She applied and was accepted at Loyola Marymount University, that Elite modeling agency gave the 17-year-old, her first modeling job. Afterwards, she had been rejected many times for modeling assignments, which led her to drop out of college so quickly.

slight racial balance

Wikipedia is a good source of information on pop culture but it is seriously not a reliable reference tool. If you cited Wikipedia, and only Wikipedia, in the courses I teach, you'd get an "F". The content can change daily on some pages, writing done and undone and then redone. It's hardly an encyclopedia which is fact-checked. This doesn't directly address your question about the tone of the writing but it's a fact that for most pages, any registered user can rewrite the copy to something you prefer. The entry might not stay the way you wrote it for very long which is one of the many reasons I'd question using it as a research tool, at least for academic topics. Tyra Banks Friends

Tyra Banks is widely known to be very close with fellow model/entrepreneur Kimora Lee Simmons(she even serves as a godmother to Simmon's two children Aoki Lee, and Ming Lee). She is also very close to American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken, Rusell Simmons,and others.

Recently, Tyra even mentioned on her syndicated talk show (The Tyra Banks Show[http://www.tyrashow.com)) that Matthew Knowles has now dubbed her an honorary member of the Knowles' family.

Because of Tyra's electrifying spirit, alot of the friends she posses were not mentioned, but the most important person in her life will always be her mother, Carolyn London. Banks' is very vocal about her admiration and appreciation for her mother's sacrifice back in her modeling days, when she would be depressed over the constant pressure and rejection of the fashion industry and her mother would be right by her side. Banks' mother actually quit her job and came to give Tyra the moral support she needed to continue in the demanding industry and become one of the most world-renowned fashion models. She isn't. Infact most people on that list are hypothetically billionaires but in real life, no where near billionaires. The way they are valued is based on their assets, which the valuers tend to over value anyway, for example a property which would probably sell for $1 million dollar in real life, is valued at $5-$10 million, as well as other over valuations. --93.97.181.187 (talk) 01:32, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

The ethnicity is hard to say with americans because even though if she was of soley african descent, it would not count as one specific ethnicity as there are like a 1000 folks in Africa with totally different genetics. But even though i do not know anything about her Heritage I assume that she does have some admixture even it does not have to be visible in her parents or grand parents. Many African-Americans are maroons, quadroons etc. of some kind because there were brought as slaves and sexual relations between the Master and female slaves were very common. So white genetics are often blended into the african-American community. On the other hand there are also white people in America with some black admixture. As you see the colour can be "washed out" either way. A good example are the maoris of new zealand. the last pure maori died 80 years ago. "Career" section

First paragraph. Noticed that it says, "She later went to Paris, France to do some runway modeling." Respectfully, only parochial Americans say "Paris, France". Mentioning the word "France" is entirely unnecessary: in the introduction to the article, the word "Paris" is linked. Anybody who thinks that the article could be referring to anywhere else apart from the capital of France needs to expand their horizon. Tyra's beef with Naomi

The article lacks any mention of Tyra's beef with Naomi Campbell. On an episode of the Tyyra Banks Show she invited Naomi on and discuses that Naomi had her thrown out of runway shows and that Naomi had treated her badly on a photoshoot before. In the hour long episode Tyra reveals that she left the high fashion modeling industry for two reasons. One was because of the weight requirements and the other because she was afraid of Naomi. She goes on to reveal that there was an unspoken rule that two black models could not be on top at the same time. Thus, she and Naomi were pitted against each other. Naomi agreed. Meant to grace the covers of magazines?

I like Tyra Banks, but - Tyra was meant to grace the covers of magazines and grace them she has? Maybe we could get a citation on this. Who are we to say what was meant for her life? We should just report the covers on which she has appeared, without making what to me seems like a personal comment. I would just edit it, but I'm still really new, and this seems like it could be a controversial topic, so I just put it here on the talk page.

The September 2009 issue of Sky Magazine has an interview with Tyra and states: "Forbes listed Banks' income from July 2008 to July 2009 at $30 million and her overall assets have been estimated at $75 million." The Forbes article they're referencing about that yearly income is also online.
