William Thomson (Dumbarton footballer) and William Thompson (footballer) appear to be the same person. English sources give his surname as Thompson ("AVPD"., "MUFCInfo"., books - Shury, Alan & Landamore, Brian. The Definitive Newton Heath F.C., Iain McCartney. The official Manchester United Players A-Z and so on), while in Scottish sources he is Thomson ("ScottishFA"., "The Sons Archive".). See this source: http://www.sonsarchive.com/player.php?id=5136, quote: Also Played For: Aston Villa, Clyde, Newton Heath. In statistics section for Dumbarton the whole season 1893-94 is missing (at that moment he was playing in England for Aston Villa and Newton Heath!). Also there is no such player with Thompson surname in Dumbarton history except Bruce Thompson (you can search). --Corwin of Amber (talk) 09:35, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think it should be William Thomson (Dumbarton footballer). He was from Scotland and played for the national team, so I suppose the Scottish sources are more reliable. We should mention in the article that in the English sources he is Thompson. --Corwin of Amber (talk) 13:03, 20 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
