Craig Hutchison

The citation you've linked to for the claim "five-time winner of the AFL Media Association Awards "Best Electronic News Reporter"" is a ninemsn article that has lifted the paragraph intact from an earlier revision of the article. The giveaway is the claim that he won an award called "most outstanding reporter in overall news". Every Google result on that phrase matches the entire paragraph exactly - and apparently no one else has ever been awarded a Quill for being the Most Outstanding Reporter in Overall News because the phrase has no hits in conjunction with anyone other than Craig Hutchison. I changed the paragraph when I looked up the Quill award to cite it - here's the last revision that features the Overall News claim: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Craig_Hutchison_%28broadcaster%29&oldid=390117298

In short, the Ninemsn article's source is Wikipedia, and therefore it isn't a good citation of fact for the claim that he's a five-time winner of the AFL Media Association Awards "Best Electronic News Reporter".

Many thanks for pointing this out. When I saw reference to these awards on the ninemsn website I thought I had finally found a decent reference related to this award. Not to be! Steve Vizard

Thanks for leaving me a message. Im not a big user but I did put a lot of work at the time into that list of names Steve Vizard interviewed. On reflection I agree that the list is too long. But I also think that it was a distinctive characteristic of his show and the success he enjoyed - other Interviewers around the world mention the key interviews they did, particulalrly when they were world class names.On balance, I suggest it should be edited down to include a handful of the biggest names as an indication of what the show was about and the drawing power it had. "Express written approval"

Hi there, I'm not a lawyer, and have frequently been on the "wrong" side of copyright/photo issues here, but I'm not sure if photos from websites can be released into the public domain, or if the "National Content Director" would own the copyright in any instance - it may be with the photographer, or the legal department. At least, you should upload the written permission to WP:OTRS (which isn't public, but puts it "on record" in the wikipedia offices). I am also surprised that they would release it into public domain, and not one of the Creative Commons licences, that would retain some rights or need of attribution attribution. As it is now, I could use any of those images for almost any purpose, positive or negative. If I wanted to release a "BT chunky meat pie" I could now legally use your uploaded photo of Brian Taylor on the packet. If I was an 3AW director I wouldn't want my competitors being able to do what they wanted with my official staff photos. The best way to get photos of living people is to take them yourselves. The quality may not be as good, but media people are almost always happy to pose for you, and you can then upload them with an appropriate licence. The-Pope (talk) 14:06, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

I am conservative by nature and have removed the photos from the articles I added them to, and have requested their speedy deletion from Wikimedia Commons pending a review. thanks again. The-Pope (talk) kindly alerted me to a likely problem with some images I uploaded (see above) and as a result I immediately removed the photos from the relevant articles and requested speedy deletion from Wikimedia Commons, which has happened. Now that I'm back to 'square one', I would like to establish if I can use these images if I complete the upload/copyright process differently. These are the facts:-

  1. I am progressively updating/expanding/creating articles about Melbourne radio station 3AW personalities. I would like to add head shot photos of the presenters.
  2. 3AW's website has suitable images, I contacted them (I live in Melbourne) and received written permission from the radio network's designated senior executive for such matters, to use them on Wikipedia.
  3. I am sure that 3AW would not want the images to be used in any other way or misused, especially as described by The-Pope above.
  4. Is there a way to use these images in the presenter's articles but prevent them from being (legally) used for any other purpose?

That sounds as if the images would unfortunately not be usable. Permission to use them on Wikipedia is not enough; Wikipedia does not consider images "free content" unless their license allows everybody to re-use them for any purpose, including commercial purposes. Everything else is considered non-free and subject to the non-free content criteria, which state that we may not use non-free images if freely licensed images might be produced. It's assumed that freely licensed images of living persons may become available. So we cannot use "Wikipedia-only" photos of the presenters. Huon (talk) 19:54, 5 May 2013 (UTC)

You could approach the content director to ask their legal team if appropriately licenced photos could be released by them. Tell them that way they get to chose the photo and not get stuck with an random fan taken photo! Have a look at other celeb photos here to see what licences are used. Hi, I'm a regular volunteer at the Third Opinion (3O) project. Your request for an opinion has been removed because it does not satisfy the requirements for a 3O: "Before making a request here, be sure that the issue has been thoroughly discussed on the article talk page. 3O is only for assistance in resolving disagreements that have come to a standstill. If no agreement can be reached on the talk page and only two editors are involved, follow the directions below to list the dispute." It's very likely that the IP editor never saw your note because s/he's editing from a dynamic IP address which changes from time to time and has changed at least twice since the time s/he made that edit to the article. Let me suggest that you place the discussion request that you put on his/her talk page on the article talk page — Talk:Ferris wheel — instead. That's actually the proper place for such a request under Wikipedia policy (though it's often useful to also drop a note on the other editor's talk page as well asking that they respond at the article talk page; you can use the {{Talkback|Talk:<Page name>|[Section title]|ts=~~~~~}} template for that purpose or just write a note from scratch). An alternative would be to boldly revert or improve the edit in question and watch to see if s/he reverts back; if so, then at least you have established a means to discuss the edit in question (but be careful not to just revert back and start an edit war). If you just want some advice about proper sourcing, consider Reliable Sources Noticeboard or Editor Assistance. Thank you for helping to improve Wikipedia. Melbourne3163 I have made some changes to the draft article, you will see my reasons in the edit summaries. Issues to resolve:

  • the first reference is probably not reliable. If I saw this elsewhere I would delete it as an unreliable source.
  • because Justin Smith is a living person, the article is a biography of a living person and every clam needs a supporting reference. I have tagged some unsupported claims.
  • I would challenge that he shared in the Quill awards. The sources do not support that he shared in them as they were awarded to Neil Mitchell, not the Mitchell Mitchell Program. I understand his role, but the claims must be verifiable.
  • I think we need another source that drives home his notability. We know he is notable, but we need to convince other users.

Thanks for your comments and the changes you have made, they certainly improve the article.
  • On reflection, I agree the first source is probably "iffy". Possibly got "over excited" when I found a published reference when there are not a lot around. A difficulty I have is that I personally know the facts in the first reference and those you have tagged as "citation needed", are correct (I don't know Justin personally but we are from the same hometown), I just cannot find a published source to support them.
  • Regarding citing the date he became the senior producer of Neil Mitchell’s program I can get confirmation of that from 3AW but it probably wouldn’t be an accepted source as it would be an email response from 3AW management.
  • Your Quill award comments are valid too, as you say, they are awards given to Neil Mitchell not the Neil Mitchell program. Mitchell acknowledges Smith’s contribution as pivotal to the win but it is verbal acknowledgement not a published one.
  • Re “I think we need another source that drives home his notability”, I agree, that’s the main reason I have been monitoring publications during the last month searching for more.

She and I spent a morning of last week trying to update profile and make it more factual. The last two decades of Ms. Farrows life have been primarily focused on humanitarian work. For that work, In 2008 she was named one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people. As you may know she is also an editorial writer for the Wall Street Journal among other publications. editorials and awards sections

Ms. Farrow thinks it would be beneficial to her page if the editorials section we created was uploaded again. Also she thinks it is of importance to have a list of awards somewhere as well, if extensive citations are necessary this is not a problem just inform me. I will upload the editorials section again tomorrow, please respond if there is any problem with these additions.

As long as the relisted pieces meet Wikipedia's requirements (as discussed in my 19 July 2013 comments on the article's talk page), I personally don't see a problem; it is a fine line in regards to the neutral point of view though and others may have a different opinion.
