Baby T.O.[edit]

Luke 4545: Saying that people refer to him as Baby T.O. because he and T.O, have similar skills is itself an opinion --- one that sounds like a fan. Owens is a superstar. People would read that opening and think T.O. and Marshall are similar. They're not. It's misleading, Luke, and I think you know that. --Lindsay (talk) 13:05, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There are always comparisons among players in any sport, past and present. Furthermore, there are many player articles on Wikipedia that compare the player the article is written about to another player. The cited source simply mentions that comparisons have been drawn between Marshall and Owens, not that Marshall is exactly like Owens. There's a difference. The opening was reworded a little bit to hopefully make this point evident. -- Luke4545 21:14, 20 November 2007 (UTC).[reply]
Well I disagree that it's appropriate but I'm not going to fight. It shouldn't be in the opening though. It's too misleading. Most people only read the opening. --Lindsay (talk) 01:11, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how it's misleading, as it's merely just making a couple of comparisons, not saying that Marshall is exactly like Owens. There are many player articles that do the same thing, and it hasn't really been a problem. Anyway, I guess we'll just leave this issue alone for now. -- Luke4545 03:38, 21 November 2007 (UTC).[reply]

The Beast nickname[edit]

This nickname has attracted more vandalism than the article itself, and I have never heard him called this nickname before. Can we get this resolved? Eagles 24/7 (C) 02:13, 19 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

just because the nickname has been vandalized doesn't mean it should be removed. it just means the person vandalizing it has no life, as the individual is obsessed with incorrectly modifying/removing the nickname. also, just because you personally haven't heard him being called the nickname isn't a reason to remove it. as i said in the edit summary of this article, ron jaworski has called brandon marshall "the beast" on monday night football. i've also heard marshall being called that on several other occasions on espn. here's a link to a transcript of the broncos/chargers monday night football game on 10/19/2009, in which jaworski calls marshall "the beast." http://www.livedash.com/transcript/nfl_football-(denver_broncos_at_san_diego_chargers)/3876/ESPN/Monday_October_19_2009/98351/ 63.149.121.99 (talk) 22:39, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
About your Third Opinion request:
Disclaimers: Although I am a Third Opinion Wikipedian, this is not a Third Opinion and is not a response to your request made at WP:3O, but is merely some personal observations and/or information about your request and/or your dispute. I have made no previous edits on Brandon Marshall and have no known association with the editors involved in this discussion.

Comments/Information: I have serious doubt that a WP:3O opinion will do any good in this cold-blooded and incivil, if slow-motion, edit war. I have requested page protection for this page and will not issue an opinion here since my neutrality might be subject to question. Some other Third Opinion Wikipedian may choose to do so, however, and the request is still listed at WP:3O. —TRANSPORTERMAN (TALK) 22:03, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I put in for a protection a couple days ago and it was declined. Good luck this time around. Eagles 24/7 (C) 22:11, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Third opinion[edit]

Since I know nothing about football, I guess I can give a meaningful third opinion. While the two references provided seem to indicate that The Beast is a possible nickname for this individual, none of them unequivocally state that this is his nickname. Barring a reference that says "popularly known a The Beast" or refers to him as Brandon "The Beast" Marshall, I suggest that the nickname be dropped. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 22:41, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

i think the source that's already given is quite adequate. it clearly states his nickname. i've seen sources for nicknames of other athletes on wikipedia, and those sources don't have the same type of wording that you think is necessary. so why should marshall be any different? i'll even add some more sources for the nickname. 63.149.121.99 (talk) 23:28, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Apparently, the gentleman is known as "The Beast". Per the sources and the thousands of online references. I withdraw my earlier opinion. --RegentsPark (sticks and stones) 23:49, 10 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Overall, this article is not too bad, though I do notice many issues with it:

  • The WP:LEAD does not summarize the article all that well. It's not that bad, but having that many statements that require a reference in there make me think the lead should be modified.
  • Ref #34 (What to look for - week 3) doesn't actually link anywhere, just to the main nflmedia site, which doesn't help.
  • In Ref #10 (making of an NFL-caliber receiver), link the appropriate Gazette article (I would have but there's many papers with that title, I didn't know which it was)
  • I'd expand the college section a bit, add some more from his senior year.
  • Anything on where he was projected to go in the draft or any comments from coaches? If not then that's okay, but it's be a nice addition.
  • Try to avoid using blogs as reliable sources, such as [1]. In his case I won't make a fuss since he's reliable himself, but more of a word of caution in the future.
  • This isn't required, but if you find using citation templates easier to use for referencing, I would prefer that they be used.
  • "Marshall officially received a three-game suspension from the NFL on August 5, 2008, due to his off-the-field issues." Instead of linking below here, just say shortly what they were.
  • In the 2008 season, I would trim the touchdown celebration paragraph a bit. It's a nice note, but it's given a lot of weight in the article currently.
  • "He finished first in fan voting for AFC wide receivers in the 2009 Pro Bowl.[42] He received 18 more votes than Randy Moss to proclaim the top spot. Four wide receivers are chosen to play in the game. Fan voting accounts for one-third of the total voting (players and coaches account for the other two-thirds). He was officially picked to play in his first Pro Bowl when selections were announced on December 16, 2008. Marshall was chosen as a starter.[43]" Overdetailed. Could be reduced to a sentence or two; if people want to know how the pro bowl people are selected they can click on that article.
  • "His performance earned him the Pudding Pie Award, which is given to the game's MVP by the NFL Network." Add a cite for this.
  • The legal trouble section should be consolidated into a paragraph or two. Also, any of them that are particularly minor shouldn't be included. Namely, the traffic tickets and 2009 incident don't seem to be useful for the article.

The article is certainly on its way to Good Article status, but at this time I don't feel that it's there yet. As a result, I'll have to fail this article. Use what I listed above to make changes and re-nom it at GA; it should go over much better the second time through. Wizardman Operation Big Bear 23:56, 4 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

According to sports illustrated it wasn't a birthday party but a new years party that darrent Williams was shot at. I guess it doesn't matter the story is still the same. But for the sake of accuracy here's the link. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1184186/1/index.htm —Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.213.250.16 (talk) 06:51, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, I will change it now. Actually, Kenyon Martin was born on December 30, so it is more likely that it was a birthday party held on New Year's Eve. Eagles 24/7 (C) 19:08, 13 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox images[edit]

The current infobox image (of Marshall in a Dolphins uniform) is not as good of an image as the one of Marshall in a Broncos uniform. For one, Marshall's ass is more prominent in the image than his (half-turned) face in the Dolphins image, while the Broncos image is of his full front. There is some dispute whether the infobox image should be the player in his current team's uniform over an image of higher quality in a past team's uniform and I would like to gain a consensus here. Eagles 24/7 (C) 00:06, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Same goes for the horrendous image at Kevin O'Connell (American football). Eagles 24/7 (C) 00:23, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'd prefer the Broncos image after his career is done, but I like a Dolphins photo currently.►Chris NelsonHolla! 00:19, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I like the Broncos picture better since its a better shot of his entire body. There's also this free image I found of Marshal in Denver's hideous retro jersey. --  StarScream1007  ►Talk  02:44, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Flickr user on Wikipedia is User:Denverjeffrey, who also took the current Broncos image of Marshall. Eagles 24/7 (C) 02:53, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
How about a picture of Marshall in neither uniform. Johnny "Seoul" Factor (talk) 10:59, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I think first priority for infobox placement should go to a high quality photo that presents the subject's physical appearance, irrespective of current affiliation. The Miami Kevin O'Connell photo (File:Kevin OConnell.jpg) is bad enough it might warrant deletion. Jweiss11 (talk) 16:26, 30 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This condition clearly has a massive effect on his life, as is evident from his many arrests, injuries etc connected to reckless, impulsive behavior that is typical of borderlines. I think that makes it relevant enough to his life to go in the lead, especially as it has affected his career. Jim Michael (talk) 19:32, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Comment about Jets being last team[edit]

I've added a source for Marshall's comment about the Jets being the last team he'll play for, and I've included it in the Jets section. I don't think it belongs in the lede, and certainly not unsourced, which is why I've reverted edits from 104.148.190.248 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). agtx 21:34, 17 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Also is significant to general understanding of the condition itself, as he falls outside of the medical professions stereotypical “borderline patient” (females, cutters, eating disorders, and ‘cry for attention’ suicide attempts. Also could be related to his career as areas of the prefrontal cortex in BPD has been shown to be altered, which may overlap with damage from multiple blows to the head— which are inherent in the life of a football player.
