I made some edits adding Smosh as #1 before Judson Laipply, with links to archived member counts from 2006-era youtube. This may throw off the claims of the opening paragraph as to who has been on top for how many days.--Milowenthasspoken 18:28, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

PewDiePie In Front

Earlier today PewDiePie surpassed the spotlight channel. On the 23rd or 24th. There is currently no sources apart from vidstatsx.com. Can someone please add this? NaveenSaily (talk) 19:34, 23 December 2013 (UTC)

Article title

This article currently is a history of the most subscribed channels, in some weird order. It isn't a list of most subscribed channels on YouTube now, as one might expect it to be. The title is very misleading.

Additionally, the tables are very hard to understand, particularly why the same channel is on there twice, with PewDiePie top and bottom, with the bottom one the current record holder. GedUK  11:52, 7 May 2014 (UTC)

Article title: Channels --> Users

Although many of the sources refer to individual user pages as "channels", according to YouTube they are different things. Compare Music to PewDiePie. A channel is a group of users with a similar theme. This article lists users, not channels, so there is some confusion about what the #1 spot should be. Including YouTube on the list

I feel that although YouTube operates their own Spotlight channel, it is still a channel in the sense where it is registered username, and one can subscribe to it and it uploads its own videos and its not a topic-related channel such as "Gaming" or "Music". What I'm saying is the [Spotlight channel] is clearly different from [a Music] "channel". For example type in youtube.com/user/youtube and it stays there as a "user". Do the same with youtube.com/user/music and it redirects to youtube.com/channel/UC-9-kyTW8ZkZNDHQJ6FgpwQ so I feel there is a tangible difference here (between user and channel) and the Spotlight user should be included. Soulbust (talk) 04:23, 4 December 2014 (UTC)

Need to clarify country of origin

What is this article defining under country of origin? Where the creators of the channels were born? Their citizenship? The country where the videos are produced? The country where they currently live? It looks mixed around, it would be helpful to readers if this information was more clear. Pewdiepie for example is a Swedish citizen and began creating videos in Sweden but now he lives in London and creates his videos there. Also the VEVO channels have the artists listed as the creator. Shouldn't the record label be in this place, as they're the ones writing, producing, and distributing their videos? And again the country of origin is messy for VEVO channels because it looks like it's referencing the artists' citizenship instead of the origin of the music. For example, Rhianna has a citizenship in Barbados however she is signed under an American music label, her music is created and managed in America by the American music label, and has a priority release in the American market before it's distributed world wide. If the focus of the channel is on the music rather than the artist's personality, shouldn't the country of origin reflect that? 2602:306:B827:ADF0:E497:7F13:3499:A657 (talk) 00:33, 9 December 2014 (UTC)

Users vs Channels (again)

Last year the article was renamed users, instead of channels. This makes sense, and "channels" means something different in Youtube lingo, but users implies individuals, and that isn't quite right, either. According to his article, Toby Turner has ~15 million subscribers spread-out over three usernames. It's clear that this is total, and that enough people subscribe to all three that he may not belong on this list (I.E. the number of people who subscribe to one or more of Toby Turner's usernames is very likely under 11 million, and we would need a source saying otherwise), but it still suggest that the article name is a potential problem. Epic Rap Battles of History is on this list, but (at least) one member of that duo also has their own 'user' with millions of subscribers.[1] The list isn't wrong, exactly, but it's missing something. Renaming it 'usernames' would fix the problem, but that seems cumbersome. Anyway, not sure what to do about it, if anything. Grayfell (talk) 00:42, 27 September 2015 (UTC)

Toby has already been removed, as 1 user can subscriber to three channels, that isn't a useful measure of anything.--JacktheHarry (talk) 10:23, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

Additional tables

For tables Users who have reached peak position and First to subscriber milestones, users need to find reliable sources for the information before restoring it. The last revision which shows problem sources is revision 667835312. Of both tables, a third of the items are incorrectly sourced. It is unlikely such detailed statistics from the past are ever likely to be found.--JacktheHarry (talk) 09:40, 11 October 2015 (UTC)

More than 20?

Is there a reason why the list stops at 20? Could the list be expanded to 25, 30, or higher?

Also, in terms of the username/channel debate: the channels you seem to define as a "channel" and not a "user" all have a "hashtag" (#) before their names (i.e., #Music, #Sports, #TV Shows, #Gaming). Should we keep all "channels" with a # before their names off the list? Clbsfn (talk) 16:51, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

It occured to me after writing this post that there could be a legitimate YouTube user who decides to put a hashtag (#) at the beginning of their username. I suggest that we should define a "channel" without a "user" as a channel that has released zero videos. Clbsfn (talk) 16:51, 26 December 2015 (UTC)

To what number should the list stop at? In the meantime, I will refrain from adding any more until someone else tells me how far the list should go. I know it shouldn't go too far, since that will require a lot of work on the part of us Wikipedia editors having to update the list each time one user overtakes another. Clbsfn (talkcontribs) 23:10, 28 December 2015 (UTC)

Since no one has responded, I have decided to increase the list to 50. I will take it no further, and if any editor wants to decrease the number, then that's okay with me. But taking the list anywhere past 50 will mean constant updating the page and will probably invite vandalism even more. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clbsfn (talkcontribs) 17:06, 31 December 2015 (UTC)

Hi, Clbsfn. I know this response may be a little late, but the set number the list should be in should be about 20-25. Due to the lack of people constantly contributing to and updating the site, it could be difficult to keep up with 50 individual entities. Especially considering how fast channels grow and rank up. 25 is the optimal range, both because it allows even a single person to keep up and update it constantly, and it's enough for a reader to be able to gather. Thank you! Latrellfg10 (talk) 21:25, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

I like this idea, but how will know which to use? Chrisrus (talk) 15:38, 30 March 2016 (UTC)

I like the idea too. I think that we should put the green 'up' arrow when the channel reached the current number from growing subscribers, and the red 'down' arrow when the channel reached the current number from losing subscribers. Clbsfn (talk) 17:52, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

I am going to add the arrows. If anyone has a problem with it, feel free to take them down and discuss it here. Clbsfn (talk) 18:07, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

How do you decide whether the arrow is upwards or downwards? --Dixtosa (talk) 13:01, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

For example: if the channel's subscriber count has been growing, eventually they will reach the next million. If that happens, we put a green arrow. And if they lose subscribers, then we put a red arrow. The arrows should only be changed when the channel reaches a different number (in millions) than they currently do. This way, people can generally see whether the channel is losing or gaining subs. YouTube Spotlight and TheFineBros are two recent examples of where we could have put red arrows. Clbsfn (talk) 15:27, 10 April 2016 (UTC)

Just to clarify - the reason the arrows for YouTube Spotlight and TheFineBros are green now is because the numbers they are at were reached through growth. If any channel loses enough subscribers for their million-number to go down, then we change their green up arrow Increase to a red down arrow Decrease. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clbsfn (talkcontribs)
It is really useless. Like, really. What happened to FineBros and Spotligt deserve an article and a subsection respectively, not arrows. Also, generally, the arrows signify position changes so this makes it even more confusing. --Dixtosa (talk) 21:22, 12 April 2016 (UTC)

@Latrellfg10 and Clbsfn: I like one digit after the decimal point. It becomes easier to find the channels that might have superseded others. --Giorgi Eufshi (talk) 08:44, 21 March 2016 (UTC)

I understand, but there is a big issue. The lack of contributors updating at a consistent rate. The list contains 25 entire channels that can gain 100K subscribers in such a short time. For the sake of accuracy, shouldn't it be kept as it is? I also don't quite get what you meant by it becoming "easier to find the channels that might have superseded others". How would it be easier for the contributors or the person observing the chart? Contributors have to view an outside chart for reference on the ranks, anyway, and visitors would clearly be able to see who is above or below who. I'm seeing more negatives than positives. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Latrellfg10 (talkcontribs) 01:15, 23 March 2016 (UTC)

I just wanted to say that of the 25 channels on the list, only 6 of them gain over 100K subscribers each week. It would not be too unreasonable to add one more decimal place. Clbsfn (talk) 05:15, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

At the current growth rates, if we added one more decimal place, the page would need to be updated every 2-3 days. Personally, I would be able to do this, but I want to ask the community: would needing to update this page every 2-3 days be too unreasonable? Adding a decimal place would increase the amount of information on the page, and would help people reading the article to see a more exact difference between the channels on the list. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Clbsfn (talkcontribs) 18:05, 9 April 2016 (UTC)

Katy Perry and Ellen DeGeneres are most notable for things other than the videos they upload to YouTube. This distinguishes them.

Channels with no clear YouTuber behind them are of course excluded as well, including YouTube itself.

Considering how every channel here is past the billion view mark (with the exception of YouTube Spotlight), how about we just convert it to that? It's more compact and cleaner to read in my opinion. Table issues

The table has worsened way too much since I last touched it. Who decided to include #movies? Also, who replaced owner infos with network infos? Network people don't even take part in producing videos. They are not the bosses of youtubers. Who thought it would be a good idea to have the same two links in the two columns (channel name and owner/network)? --Giorgi Eufshi (talk) 06:23, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

Keep the table how it is.

Alright, so many people are changing the table, it's worthless to keep up the rules of first talk to edit. I believe it should just stay at 30.--JJBers (talk) 15:33, 5 August 2016 (UTC)

I agree. This number is used by many other YouTube-related lists on this website, so it makes sense for this list to have 30. Clbsfn (talk) 16:17, 6 August 2016 (UTC)

Yuya owns Yuya

It says Yuya owns Yuya.

For some probably obvious reason, Wikipedia doesn't know anything about Yuya, but surely we can do better than to say the channel owns itself. Chrisrus (talk) 02:50, 7 August 2016 (UTC)

If/when we merge the page "List of YouTube Diamond Play Button recipients" with this one, there will be even more Spanish-language YouTubers on this page who don't have pages on the English Wikipedia. These would be: whinderssonnunes from Brazil, and TheWillyRex from Spain. Clbsfn (talk) 16:03, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Although, if we stop the list at 50 after merging, then TheWillyRex would not be on the list unless their count climbs up past the 50th channel. Clbsfn (talk) 16:11, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

Yeah, we definitely need to create an article for whinderssonnunes. They have the fastest growing subscriber count of any YouTube channel in the top 50. Clbsfn (talk) 16:17, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
Through its WP:RED links, this article is helping to get these lacunas filled. In this way, this article has a positive effect on the project. Chrisrus (talk) 17:36, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

The newer page, List of Youtube Diamond Play Button Recipients, is basically the same list as the "Top channels" section of this page, except containing more channels. I propose that that article be turned into a redirect to the "Top channels" section, with the list in that section expanded to include all the YouTube channels which have more than 10 million subscribers. @JJBers, Chrisrus, and Clbsfn: If the pages are to be merged (as clearly no one bothered to comment after that), should this page's list retain its current length (top 30), or should it use the length of the other list (10 million and above)? Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

The more the better, so long as it doesn't get so big we can't keep up with it. That article indicates that so far we can handle more than this. First of all, I'm sorry about the previous response, I was on a bus and on my phone with autocorrect on, but mainly I was trying to say is that the list is fine at 50 channels being constantly updated, but I suggested to have a revamp of the article List of Youtubers to change the channels to be organized by amount of subscribers than name, this is to keep any new people who get the subscription milestone to get the play button get put in those categories.--JJBers (talk) 01:22, 10 September 2016 (UTC)
I agree that we should keep the list at 50 so it won't be too hard to manage in the future, and I certainly agree that that page should be merged with this one. They are two similar to exist separately. Clbsfn (talk) 15:57, 10 September 2016 (UTC)

Question

Does the Vevo channel count as a Vevo channel? I mean it doesn't just feature one just artist, so I'm a little confused.--JJBers (talk) 20:01, 11 September 2016 (UTC)

I suppose that technically, since Vevo owns its own channel, we should consider it as a "vevo" channel. It's true that it isn't a channel for one specific artist, but that doesn't have to be true for us to consider it a "vevo" channel. Clbsfn (talk) 15:25, 13 September 2016 (UTC)

Thumbnail Problem

Recently, a couple of users deiced to add a image to the page, which is fine if this was a page that was about subject, that was requested to have a photo, or needed one. But this page doesn't require, or even need one. I would understand the photo if there wasn't a thumbnail, but this is one from the navigation box on the bottom of the page, which doesn't mean it is a clear thumbnail, it still exists. Also if there wasn't a thumbnail, why pick PewDiePie, I understand he is the largest YouTube, but why have it be one specific person, and not one of a subscribe button, or a example of the most subbed list on YouTube. I just feel that the PewDiePie photo is pointless, and is unnecessary for the page to grow, or help it in any way.--JJBers (talk) 00:03, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

And also no one brought it to the talk page first, even though I reverted it two times. I'm just baffled by that.--JJBers (talk) 00:05, 22 September 2016 (UTC)

Gallery

Since now the thumbnail problem has ended, I consider we have a gallery compromising of the top 5, which should be very stable right now.--JJBers Public (talk) 16:53, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Sorting

@Jc86035: I think the change arrows in general are unnecessary for this list but if they're going to stay I think they should be separate. If you look at Billboard or Spotify charts they both have separate columns for the arrows. It looks better and makes more sense to put them in their own column instead of having both the rank and arrows squished together in the same column. --MattStan10 (talk) 20:35, 2 December 2016 (UTC)

Nicki Minaj

Isn't Minaj considered American despite being born in Trinidad? She's lived in the U.S. since age five, and on her article, it's been decided to call her a "Trinidadian-born American." Life of Tau (talk) 04:12, 4 December 2016 (UTC)

@Life of Tau: The column is labeled "country of origin" not "country of residence" --MattStan10 (talk) 09:15, 4 December 2016 (UTC)
@MattStan10: The U.S. isn't just her "country of residence"; it's where she was raised and built her career. I get the impression that the "country of origin" label is there either because of people like PewDiePie and Justin Bieber who currently reside in countries different to where they grew up and got their start or because otherwise all the Vevo channels would have to be labeled American since it's an American company. And this makes sense for them—just because they've moved to a different country doesn't mean their nationality has changed, and their pages reflect that, still calling them Swedish and Canadian, respectively. But this isn't the case for Minaj; she hasn't moved to a different country than the one she grew up in, and her page thus calls her a "Trinidadian-born American." May I ask what you consider the term "country of origin" to mean? Because if it's simply country of birth, then D.R.A.M.'s channel, should it make this list, would have Germany as its country of origin, despite him not being German in any way—he was just born there. If it's dependent on parental ethnicity, then the Weeknd would have Ethiopia as his country of origin. Life of Tau (talk) 01:53, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

List of most subscribed YouTubers?

Do you think that a list of most subscribed YouTubers would also be good to have?

A YouTuber is someone who is primarily notable for creating and uploading videos to YouTube.

PewDiePie and Jenna Marbles are YouTubers, but Justin Bieber and The Ellen Show are not.

They are pop stars and TV talk show hosts who, yes, also have popular YouTube channels, but no one calls Eminem a YouTuber.

People might really enjoy and benefit from also having another list of the world's biggest YouTubers.

In my opinion. What's yours? Chrisrus (talk) 05:41, 7 December 2016 (UTC)

IMHO this isn't really necessary (we already have a list of channels). The selection criteria might also be slightly problematic: Bieber was initially found on YouTube before he became world-famous. There's a similar problem with Pentatonix (or four of them, anyway). Jc86035 (talk) Use {{re|Jc86035}}

Pewdiepie has now confirmed on Twitter that he will delete his channel at 5pm gmt: https://twitter.com/pewdiepie/status/806981139399405569

In preperation you should probably take his name of the most subscribed list and changes his status on the "historically most subscribed" section. In addition, as soon as Pewdiepie deletes his channel, HolaSoyGerman will be the most subscribed Youtuber, so update that too. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gandostudios (talkcontribs) 01:49, 9 December 2016 (UTC)
