External Links[edit]

Is it really necessary to include so many links, especially since the are all just subpages of the first one given? --Anibas 23:01, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

More Information[edit]

I added a lot more information regarding the subscriptions, and how logging-in works. Please Copyedit, as I do not have a lot of experience with PlayOnline!! Tails0600 01:27, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It should be known that Square-Enix never created the playonline software but was actually purchased from SCEA for use for FFXI. ----Arkitanx/Fenrir

Information about Final Fantasy IX and the BradyGames strategy Guide[edit]

I don't know all of the information myself, but I believe that it should be added for the sake of historical accuracy. BradyGames released a strategy guide for Final Fantasy IX (FF9) around the time of the game's release. Plastered throughout the guide, all over the front and back covers, was how more information about the game can be found on Playonline.com. Many of the secrets in the game were withheld from the guide that people paid money for, only to be told to go online and enter in a certain 'code' to view the information. SquareEnix has apparently apologized for the guide after its release and vowed to never do anything like that again. I don't have any sources for this information besides my own memory(Managed to find my old guide! Everything is as I remembered it. Further explained below If somebody who is more capable than me at Wiki editing could add it, I think it would be a worthwhile job. Right now, there is no mention of FFIX anywhere on the main article, and I believe that to be a huge misstep in clarity, as I believe that the FFIX guide was the first actual use of Playonline. Found the guide[edit]

In the margins on most of the pages in this book, are blue boxes with a 'Keyword' (such as CRDMST7) that you need to input somewhere on Playonline.com. Here's an example of one "Having trouble finding all five Card Masters? PlayOnline will lead you to all of them!" or "There's a special item in the Village, if you didn't get it previously. To find out where it is and how to get it, go to PlayOnline." The book was has a copyright of 2001 by "Macmillan USA, Inc." while Final Fantasy 9 (IX) has a copyright of 2000. This internet archive link shows Squaresoft's page back then, with this FAQ: "Q - What is PlayOnline? A - PlayOnline is Square's totally new network service designed to provide a wide range of services and entertainment including Online Games, Online Entertainment, and Online Communication. Q - What's the difference between PlayOnline and PlayOnline.com? A - PlayOnline.com provides in-depth strategies for our newest games starting with FINAL FANTASY IX as well as game and merchandise information." .... There you go! Proof

Initial comments[edit]

  • The lead needs to be expanded slightly to meet WP:LEADLENGTH. I would just recommending adding a bit on its reception
  • "The termination date of service for Final Fantasy XI and Playonline" - PlayOnline
  • "Square announced three Final Fantasy games," - needs italicisation
  • "The service was first announced as costing 500 yen" - ¥500
  • "and a 1000 yen monthly user fee" - ¥1000
  • "PlayOnline opened on June 6, 2000 to both Japanese and English speaking players" - speaking players? How about just something like Japan and English-speaking countries or even Japan and Anglophone countries
  • "The sites merchandise included pieces from" - site's
  • "The browser was not a general purpose Internet tool, but only accessed Square content" - delink Square as it already has been linked
  • "exclusively despite Microsofts initial wishes" - Microsoft's
  • " for this reason. it was hoped that content would" - capital 'It'
  • "retailing at 7,140 Yen and had a monthly subscription price of 1,344 Yen" - use the Yen symbols ¥7140 and ¥1344
  • "and a sought 5 million dollar settlement" - $5 million
  • No dead links
  • No dab links

Pretty cool to think that an online service for the PS2 shut down last month! On hold until all are addressed. JAGUAR  13:22, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Much better! Thanks for the speedy fixes. Promoted. JAGUAR  14:10, 12 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
