Disambiguating[edit]

DAB talk page

{{WikiProject National Register of Historic Places|class=dab}} {{DisambigProject}}

Hi Pubdog. An edit title of yours with "DAB" in it caught my eye, off my watchlist, so I went ahead and created Franklin Square Historic District. You were right in this case that adding (city, state) was needed to distinguish the Baltimore one from others of the same name. In general, it would be more helpful if you'd go ahead and start a disambiguation page if you identify that one is needed. You can generate a cut-and-paste-ready one using Elkman's tool for that at http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/dablinker.php. And you can tag that for review by me, or tag any other disambiguation page for review by me, by adding {{:NRHP dab needing cleanup}} {{NRHP dab needing cleanup}} at the top. doncram (talk) 20:11, 21 February 2009 (UTC)

Troublesome markup inside the preceding signed contrib has been corrected; see this section's subsection.

Thanks very much for the sage advice and for pointing me to the Elman tool. Sorry for the naive question, but how would I have started the DAB page without having something to link to? This is the only way I've created new pages. Does that make sense? For instance ... I have another DAB page to create for North Central Historic District. Once I get the Elkman code, how do I then create the blank page to paste the code into?----Pubdog (talk) 21:39, 21 February 2009 (UTC)
Just search, at the left, for "North Central Historic District". It will not find a page exactly matching that, so it offers you, in red, an option to "create this page". I think that's what you're looking for. Start that, then paste in from the E-man disambig page generator output for "North Central Historic District" for a start, which gives you two NRHPs of that exact name. To go a bit further, you can also run a more general search, using E-man's "who has" search (at http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/whohas.php. Search on just "North Central" and you'll see that there is one more, nearly the same name, which I would also manually edit into the disambig page, because I think that could be helpful so some readers. doncram (talk) 03:27, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, I've never looked at that whohas page before...thanks for helping me unintentionally :-) Nyttend (talk) 04:06, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
I didn't know that was there, either. Kinda de-mystifies DAB a little.  :) Lvklock (talk) 11:04, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Thanks very much. North Central Historic District created. I added {{tl:NRHP dab needing cleanup}}, but removed it because it just displayed as a text string. I've created 100s of pages as you instruct ... I guess I thought creating a DAB page required something special! Best wishes--Pubdog (talk) 11:35, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Looks great. I had trouble composing that string to display properly, i meant to say you could paste in {{NRHP dab needing cleanup}}, as in this diff just to demonstrate. But your dab is great, properly shows one bluelink per dab entry. Tagging with "NRHP dab needing cleanup" is more helpful when you come across an existing dab page that seems out of format, and it will work to get me to come by and fix it up. Thanks! doncram (talk) 18:25, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Got it ... thanks for all the help and for adding the AZ entry--Pubdog (talk) 23:55, 22 February 2009 (UTC)
Created a new one, see Mount Airy Historic District--Pubdog (talk) 11:57, 26 February 2009 (UTC)

Broken template ref repaired[edit]

Presumably bcz the markup {{tl:NRHP dab needing cleanup}} didn't do what you expected, you changed it to {{:NRHP dab needing cleanup}}, which may look better when rendered, but had the side effect of putting your talk page into Category:Disambiguation; i haven't tried to figure out why. But what i am sure you were trying to recall would be {{tl|NRHP dab needing cleanup}}, which renders thus:

{{NRHP dab needing cleanup}}

and should avoid any embarrassing side effects. I took the liberty of correcting (and clearly labeling this markup) inside your signed contrib, feeling sure that it would not cause any misunderstood attribution, but would quickly get you out of being the 16th page in that 15 page-entry Cat. No harm done, i hope; thanks.

Question re: apostrophe[edit]

I am trying to use http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/dablinker.php to verify NRHP DABS for names containing apostrophes, such as St. John's Church. When I do, I get an error. Do you know how else I can generate that script?--Pubdog (talk) 01:16, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Oh, that's an undocumented feature/bug of the Elkman system. To create a dab for "St. John's Church" you need to insert a backslash before the apostrophe, so search on "St. John\'s Church" instead. doncram (talk) 01:36, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

From Sanfranman59's talk page

About disambiguating when creating a new table for X city, Y county, Z state what i do is: 1. Check all bluelinks in the newly pasted in Elkman table.

1A. If a bluelink points to an article on the NRHP, then okay.

1B. If a bluelink points to a disambiguation page already, check that the page presents the county X NRHP properly (meaning that it shows red-link to "____ (X, Z)" followed by bluelink ", listed on the NRHP in X, Z" or ", listed on the NRHP in Z". If your NRHP is not presented properly there already, then probably other ones are not presented properly either. You can check to see whether other ones should be added by quickly checking "Who has". Tag the dab for me to come fill it out by tagging it with {{NRHP dab needing cleanup}}, or fill it out all the way. For a dab titled "Smith House", I add all the places named exactly "Smith House", of course, and also all places named "Firstname Smith House", and variations like "Smith House and Barn". I usually find that one or more of those variation ones already has an article, so the dab has at least one bluelink. If there is no bluelink entry, I will create an NRHP stub, to protect the new dab page from dab-page-deleters. It's fine if you just want to tag the page for me to come check it, to develop it out and/or to create an NRHP stub. What I need help on is identifying the need for a new dab or for cleanup of a dab.

1C. If a bluelink currently points to somewhere else, then a dab is usually needed. Check "who has". Start the dab, perhaps very minimally, tagging with {{NRHP dab needing cleanup}}. Again what i need is eyes identifying that dab pages are needed. In some cases the bluelink points to an article that is a primary use for the name already, in which case it may be appropriate to add an "otheruses" message pointing to a new dab page "____ House (disambiguation)", to be created. Start that new dab.

2. Consider all the red-links in the newly pasted in Elkman table. If it looks like one is for a common-sounding name, where it is possible/likely that another NRHP or two could share the name, check "Who has". For example, "Garcia House" sounded common to me. Who has showed only one NRHP of exactly that name, but others of form "Firstname Garcia House". Start the dab.

3. Back in the list-article, change the table entry to avoid any new or old dabs, but rather to point to the fully specified redlink "____ House (X, Z)"

4. Down in the old list of NRHP links in the list-article, check that the old entry for the place doesn't point to an article already that has a different non-standard name, like "____ House (X City)". If so, move it to "___ House (X City, Z State)" so that the disambiguation page and the Elkman table point to it properly. Or revise the disambiguation page and the Elkman table entry.

I may be wrong, but I have the impression that you do steps 1A, 3 and 4, but not 1B, 1C and 2. I believe this because you previously informed me that you do not create dabs or new NRHP stubs to support dabs, and I haven't been noticing that you have created dab pages. Cumulatively over time I have developed a lot of NRHP dab pages and now come across them regularly from new list-tables. I usually check who created dab pages that i come across, and don't recall noticing your name, or at least not often. I do have a list of all the NRHPs for which there are 6 or more of exactly that name, and have fixed or am fixing up dabs for all of them. But for smaller cases, I need help identifying the need for a dab page to be created or to be cleaned up. And with the {{NRHP dab needing cleanup}} tag available now, I am hoping you will be able to identify those without spending a whole lot of time doing all the dab page development. Does this not describe some steps different from what you are doing already? Thanks, doncram (talk) 16:17, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinates checking[edit]

Copied from Dudemanfellbra's talk page inder the heading "indeed" on 5/11/09

Biloxi Light infobox does look great. :) If working on a general infobox, one feature that would be nice to copy from {{infobox Protected area}} is how it allows coords in DMS or decimal format. Thanks! doncram (talk) 18:02, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

You do know that the NRHP infobox allows coords in both formats too, right? Look at the "Coordinates" section of the documentation. I usually use decimal format for places. You can even input decimal format and cause the output to be DMS.. or vice versa. --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 18:06, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Excuse the eavesdropping, so to speak. Let me get this straight....somewhere I can just tweak a format to get the coordinates presented the opposite way? At one point I spent considerable time running through articles on some list or another that had coordinates in two formats overlapping each other up above the infobox, going to some outside site and entering a set of coordinates to see if they matched before getting rid of one of them. This tweak sounds like it could save considerable time on that kind of checking. I'll have to look at that template documentation and see if I can make heads or tails out of it! Thanks. :) Lvklock (talk) 20:02, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Haha yea.. for an example, if you typed |latitude=32.74846 |longitude=-81.73638 and wanted it to display in DMS format, you could simply add | coord_format = dms... or if you had dms coordinates and wanted to display them in decimal format, you can type |coord_format = dec. --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 20:10, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for the examples! Lvklock (talk) 22:13, 11 May 2009 (UTC)
