NRHP naming convention[edit]

Hi Pubdog, I noticed you revised a link in the List of NHLs in MD article which I contributed to in the past and is on my "watchlist". Glad to see you making contibutions.

I hope you don't mind my providing some feedback / asking for discussion about article naming conventions. I see that you moved/renamed Montpelier Mansion to add city and state info in the article name. Glancing at your contributions, I see that you've made similar moves, for example moving William W. Early House to William W. Early House (Brandywine, Maryland)‎. For sites listed on the NRHP, it is customary to add "(City, State)" in article names when necessary for disambiguating from other NRHP sites of the same name (with wikipedia articles already or not) or for disambiguating from other non-NRHP places. I don't know if there are any other Montpelier Mansions in the world, but I am pretty that there is only one notable William W. Early House, so the name was unique. So at least the last rename was not necessary, and I may revert it. In general, names should be only as long as necessary to be unique, in my view, and i think this view will be consistent with wikipedia article naming policies. Could you please reply here (I'll watch this Talk page for a while) or to my Talk page?

Also, if you're interested in NRHP sites, please consider joining wp:NRHP and/or commenting or asking questions at its talk page, wt:NRHP. Keep up the good work! doncram (talk) 22:16, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Doncram and thank you for the encouraging words. I appreciate the advice and believe that it may be better to address apotential disambiuation issue before it arises. I cannot, for example, guarantee that there will not be a William W. Early house in Montana that does not appear on the NRHP, but is a local landmark deserving a Wikipedia entry. Therefore, I'm trying to prevent another user having to address the Move issue before it arises. I hope this makes sense ...--Pubdog (talk) 22:25, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for replying promptly, and, yes, I understand your concern. I've done a lot of work in disambiguating between NRHP sites, including developing lots of disambiguation pages like First Presbyterian Church and U.S. Post Office which are among the most common names for NRHP sites. I imagine you may be creating some articles based off of List of RHPs in MD. However, you don't understand (and there'd be no reason you would), that for the most part disambiguating has been done already. For most NRHPs listed there, there is no further renaming necessary. If, in the future there is some other William W. Early House designated, then is the time to move it. We don't in general anticipate such a need, so the shorter name should be used for now (and probably forever). doncram (talk) 22:31, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
As you've noticed, i tackled the task of creating tables for several MD counties around Prince George's. In the process, I notice that the old lists for Maryland NRHP sites were actually not as high quality as my remarks above suggested. In these Maryland counties just now I've found it necessary to do a lot of disambiguating work, because i see relatively common-sounding names like "Leonard House" which I judge are probably not unique. For that one, I created Leonard House disambiguation article and listed a number of NRHP sites having approximately that name, using two additional Elkman-supported tools for creating disambig pages and for identifying NRHPs names having any use of a given word or phrase. And then I added a (City, Maryland) qualifier to the name for the Maryland one. My policy is that I won't add a (City, State) qualifier without adding the item to an existing disambig page (or creating a new disambig page if necessary, with 2 or more entries). Mainly, by this comment, I just want to acknowledge that I understand better what you were encountering when starting on the Prince George's County ones. P.S. Thanks also for splitting out the Montgomery and Prince George's County lists out of the state-wide article, which was getting too big. Cheers, doncram (talk) 23:27, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I very much appreciate the comment reagrding disambiguation before starting; if you ever get to Baltimore that needs a lot of help. Thanks for working on MD. It's a beautiful state with a lot of great historic places!! I went ahead and created the separate MoCo and PG Co pages becaus it was taking so long to load the whole Md page. Baltimore should be next. You've helped me tremendously just navigating the Wiki tools and I am very greatful for that. Ted--Pubdog (talk) 23:50, 30 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, the above is an automatic message created following my tagging the article with "copyvio". I did that because I wondered about the sourcing...there was no reference included in the article...and i found quickly by google search a website that the text in the wikipedia article was apparently copied from. I assume you're a relatively new wikipedia contributor and you don't yet quite know all the ropes, which is fine. However, we can't accept copies of copyrighted text by strong policy rules, and, by the opinions of some like me we don't even want copied text from public domain websites. The article you created is a worthy topic, and the website you found is a good source. You just need, however, to use your own words to create a short description based on that source, and you need to reference the source. You can create a footnote to a website like that by copying and modifying the examples in many other articles. I am sure you can be a great contributor here, but there are some policies and guidelines that have to be followed.... Cheers, doncram (talk) 22:38, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, actually, i may have tagged it too hastily. Was it already in your words? I'm not absolutely sure if the text was copied word-for-word or not. If not, it would not be a copyvio and just the source would need to be added. Please don't take offense either way, if i marked this wrong or not. doncram (talk) 22:42, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The primary spource for the article was the Maryland Historical Trust website, http://www.marylandhistoricaltrust.net/nr/NRDetail.aspx?HDID=1013&FROM=NRMapPR.html, which is a government website and I believe is in the public domain. The article is edited to reflect how I beleieve a Wikipedia entry should be presented. It is cited as an External site, but perhaps should be a reference too? My interest here is to work on PG County historical sites. I sense there is some resistence to my doing so, so please advise whether I should consider my efforts. I am enjoying this very much, but your assumption that I am copying from the Brandywine site is rather disturbing--Pubdog (talk) 22:48, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, thanks, that link is helpful. There are many new wikipedia users who do copy from websites, sometimes from public domain sites and sometimes not. I may have been too hasty in tagging it, but I did not think that would blank the page, which is complicating the matter right now. The copyvio system here at wikipedia has recently changed, apparently; I thought my adding the tag would just put a notice at the top of the page that the page needs to be checked, raising a question, but still leaving the page readable. Again, please don't take offense, let's just sort this out. I don't at all mean to offend you, and I do hope/expect to help you contribute productively. Really, I am glad you are taking an interest in these Maryland sites. I would like to give you some more tools to use, in fact. You created the NRHP infobox from scratch, I believe; there is a tool available that generates cut-and-paste-ready versions of such NRHP infoboxes with official National Register info about the specific site already filled out.
About this copyvio question, an administrator will come address this soon, and will check this discussion and add here, i hope (i asked for an admin to do so). About that source site, I believe actually it is not in the public domain. The Maryland Historical Trust is not part of the Federal government, even if it may get some funding from there. If it is part of the State of Maryland, that would also not suffice to put the website in the public domain. State materials are in general not public domain; I don't know if you are aware of that? doncram (talk) 23:02, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It seems i erred in identifying the relevant webpage, and i apologize also about not checking the External links you had provided in the article. I too quickly evaluated it as being sourceless, because there was only one reference (to the NRIS database which is not a source for text). But there are in fact passages in the drafted article that duplicate copyrighted text. I list for comparison passages in the Talk page of the article, at Talk:William W. Early House (Brandywine, Maryland). In general, there's not resistance to your creating and developing articles about sites in the Brandywine area, and I am glad you are enjoying getting started in wikipedia, but there are some adjustments needed. In general, you need to put info into your own words, although short quotes are acceptable from copyrighted sources under fair use (although quote marks and footnotes to the sources are absolutely needed), and longer quotes to public domain material are okay (and here quote marks and footnotes to the source are helpful and, in my personal view very necessary, but my personal view is not necessarily the wikipedia official policy at this time). You may find it helpful to browse in wikipedia policy/guideline areas such as wp:plagiarism and wp:copyright. Thanks, doncram (talk) 23:53, 28 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

disambiguation tools[edit]

FYI, when wondering about whether a given name needs disambiguation or not, i use two Elkman-supported tools: http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/dablinker.php which generates starter text for a new disambiguation page; and http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/whohas.php, which checks for any occurrences of a given word or phrase in any NRHP site name. Using the latter on the word "stables" i see there are only about 10 NRHP places nation-wide with that word in the name, for example. Of course Google searching is another tool relevant in a disambiguation question... searching on "Belair Stables" turns up mostly hits on the Bowie, Maryland one, but also in the first two pages of results shows a historic use of Bel-Air Stables in Los Angeles, CA, and a Bel Air Stables in Arizona. I interpret that to mean that the Bel Air Stables in Maryland is the primary usage, and I think the others are not wikipedia notable, so I would not create articles on them. So a disambiguation page on Belair Stables would have just one entry, i.e. be an invalid disambiguation page, so i conclude it doesn't need disambiguation.... that's just to share how i would think about it, and about the tools. I expect that your judgment was correct for some of the Prince George's County places, that there needed to be disambiguation for them. These tools would help you create disambiguation pages listing the plausible alternatives (like I explained about creating the Leonard House disambiguation above). I don't want to be mysterious about tools that i have use of. No reply necessary, just sharing. doncram (talk) 00:00, 1 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

Once again, good work on the new articles and pictures. I would ask that you turn off the time stamp in your images if you can - there's always a time stamp in the image file metadata in any case. Also, be careful of specific photographs of sculptures like Mother and Child Jan 09.JPG, as those images will fall afoul of copyright - they aren't treated like buildings. I'll do some research, but I will probably have to zap it as a copyvio unless there's a fair-use rationale that can be made. Sorry. Acroterion (talk) 23:07, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for the sage advice. I'll turn off the camera date on the next trip. I'm curious to know the outcome of the Mother and Child image. I went to the movies over in Greenbelt and there it was! I thought it would make a good addition to the Greenbelt Historic District (Greenbelt, Maryland) page. If it needs to go, so be it! Ted--Pubdog (talk) 23:11, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It stinks, but the copyright for public sculpture is handled differently from architecture. Unless the article is specifically about the sculpture, fair use won't apply, and the image would only incidentally be able to include the sculpture, as part of a wider panorama. geo reorganization of Baltimore NRHP list-articles[edit]

Hey i see u have done a whole lot of developing of MD's NRHP lists. They look great. Including all the pics added to sections of the Baltimore list-tables, which didn't exist 2 months ago....nice job.

Anyhow, i wondered if u noticed discussion at wt:NRHP about organizing single city lists. It's linked from a side discussion i was hoping to start up with you, at Talk:National Register of Historic Places listings in Baltimore (Independent City). I would be into re-splitting up the Baltimore lists into 9 (or fewer) geo-based lists. Each resulting article would look pretty much the same, just involves cutting and pasting rows into different tables. Please comment! Cheers, doncram (talk) 05:12, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I very much appreciate your work on Maryland NRHP articles Deanlaw (talk) 22:30, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Editing William W. Early house[edit]

I notice you took a photo of my house just a couple of weeks ago and added it here. Nice photo. I'm also the creator of BrandywineMD.com, which has history of the house and town. I'm also familiar with other resources (newspaper articles) for the article to expand it if you're interested. I could help work on the article if it's not against any rules (there are too many rules here). Maybe there is a good example of a complete historic house entry? You can contact me through my web site as I might not check back here soon. JoyceD (talk) 06:34, 6 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maryland communities[edit]

You might benefit from looking at the GNIS for your Maryland communities: it can give you the basic data you need to source the articles. Nyttend (talk) 18:39, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Lewisdale, to take a single example, looks quite good! Nyttend (talk) 04:32, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Opera singer example[edit]

The pattern that I follow is the same as I see people follow in general: if the person has no article, remove unless it's something that makes you automatically notable (essentially, either a politician or a professional athlete). Moreover, if the person's article says nothing about the place (for a random example, say if I placed Ezra Meeker at that same community as the opera singer) remove, because there's nothing associating them. Nyttend (talk) 03:57, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

HDs[edit]

Perhaps these areas are centered at the two addresses? All I know is that they are officially districts: if the Register lists them as districts, I don't see how they couldn't be districts, even if tiny for a district. Perhaps you could ask Doncram or Elkman? Nyttend (talk) 18:14, 20 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguating[edit]

Hi Pubdog. An edit title of yours with "DAB" in it caught my eye, off my watchlist, so I went ahead and created Franklin Square Historic District. You were right in this case that adding (city, state) was needed to distinguish the Baltimore one from others of the same name. In general, it would be more helpful if you'd go ahead and start a disambiguation page if you identify that one is needed. You can generate a cut-and-paste-ready one using Elkman's tool for that at http://www2.elkman.net/nrhp/dablinker.php. And you can tag that for review by me, or tag any other disambiguation page for review by me, by adding {{tl:NRHP dab needing cleanup}} at the top. doncram (talk) 20:11, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for the sage advice and for pointing me to the Elman tool. Sorry for the naive question, but how would I have started the DAB page without having something to link to? This is the only way I've created new pages. Does that make sense?--Pubdog (talk) 20:31, 21 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I responded at my Talk page, will be happy to continue there. doncram (talk) 03:28, 22 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, good, i visited Chapel Hill Historic District which you had developed and tagged. The only thing further to do was to remove the wikilinking of "listed on the NRHP in __" for one entry that already has a bluelink entry. The MOSDAB guideline relevant is that there should usually be exactly one bluelink per entry (either the subject article, or if that is a redlink, then an explanatory link giving an article with context and showing the same redlink). Thanks! doncram (talk) 06:28, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, that's a feature/bug of the Elkman system. To create a dab for "St. John's Church" you need to insert a backslash before the apostrophe, so search on "St. John\'s Church" instead. doncram (talk) 01:34, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Joppa(towne)[edit]

One interesting thing, at least in my mind, is that outside of Maryland there really aren't many historic districts that redirect to neighborhoods; it's really not the standard pattern nationwide, at least in the 25-or-so states that I've observed. If you want to redirect it, by the way, you'd likely do better to send it to Joppa, Maryland, which seems to me to be about an abandoned village that may well be the actual site. Nyttend (talk) 18:02, 23 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Bowie[edit]

Hi! I see you added a picture for Bowie, Maryland and was wondering if you might snap a shot of Bowie High School to help us start expanding that stub of an article?--Ludasaphire (talk) 13:44, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Link change[edit]

So "Galesvile" isn't its real name? :-) Thanks for catching the error. Nyttend (talk) 16:11, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Curious[edit]

Just curious, why Linwood, Carroll County, Maryland when Linwood, Maryland is a redlink? Nyttend (talk) 14:12, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I found in the GNIS search for Linwood, Maryland two instances; one in Carroll County and one in Howard County. Maybe I need to add to the Linwood DAB page?--Pubdog (talk) 14:14, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Makes sense; and I agree that it would be useful to add it to the disambiguation page. Nyttend (talk) 15:54, 28 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Maryland NRHPs[edit]

Great job! One request: would you be able/willing to subcategorise some of them by function? Many states have their own categories that fit under Category:Houses on the National Register of Historic Places or Category:Registered Historic Places of religious function — could you create and populate Category:Houses on the National Register of Historic Places in Maryland and Category:Buildings of religious function on the National Register of Historic Places in Maryland? Nyttend (talk) 02:44, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I can do that. Please note that for historic homes on the NRHP in MD, I've routinely added them to Category:Houses in Maryland. Similar for churches etc. Should I replace them with the new category or add this as another category?--Pubdog (talk) 17:18, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, please remove the houses category. To give you a little background: after discussing it at WT:NRHP, I created the Ohio houses category, placing it on every NRHP house that had an article and replacing both "Houses in Ohio" and "NRHP in Ohio". Thanks for placing the Maryland houses in "Houses in Maryland"; many of the Ohio houses weren't in "Houses in Ohio". As far as the religious places: it's probably best to keep them in their "churches" etc. category. Because the religious category can include non-Christian houses of worship (Iowa even includes a mosque!), this category should simply replace "NRHP in Maryland". There was discussion about splitting this type of category by faith, although I don't think that went anywhere. Nyttend (talk) 17:55, 3 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've completed redoing Houses cats and adding religious functions to churches in MD. Thanks for the guidance. --Pubdog (talk) 02:28, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Gaithersburg B & O Railroad Station and Freight Shed[edit]

I just found out from your article on the Gaithersburg B & O Railroad Station and Freight Shed, that it's the same location as the Gaithersburg (MARC station), and I am about to merge both articles. ----DanTD (talk) 23:04, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message. No objection here! I saw the note and was about to do the same thing. I think the details from Gaithersburg B & O Railroad Station and Freight Shed should be merged to Gaithersburg (MARC station). I'll take a look at the results when your done.--Pubdog (talk) 23:33, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
See for yourself. I just wish I could merge the railroad and NRHP infoboxes together. ----DanTD (talk) 23:49, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Looks great! I too think there should be a combined NRHP / rail station infobox. I just don't know how to go abt designing one. Best wishes ...--Pubdog (talk) 23:56, 17 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
It's kind of a crapshoot when it comes to combining infoboxes. For Amtrak stations, it works in some, but not all station articles. When it comes to communter railroad stations, on the other hand, it almost always awkward and broken-looking. The railroad infoboxes stay in tact, but the NRHP infoboxes attached to them shrink. Some people are supposed to be fixing this problem, but there hasn't really been that much evidence of any success as of this writing. ----DanTD (talk) 15:10, 18 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

So was the station house restored? ----DanTD (talk) 12:56, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware that the station was restored. It is located at Riverdale and within the historic district. It is a very utilitarian building with little or no historic significance.--Pubdog (talk) 12:58, 4 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image deletion[edit]

I've deleted File:Crawford-Gardner House Apr 09.JPG as you requested. In the future, if you want to have your own image deleted, could you simply place {{db-author}} on the page instead of deleting information and adding a notice on the talk page? Nothing wrong with doing what you did, but it will get deleted a lot faster if it's in the speedy deletion category that {{db-author}} will put it into. The only way I discovered it was looking through your contributions to see if you'd done anything with the house picture :-) Nyttend (talk) 00:42, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks very much for your assistance with the deletion. I will remember your guidance in future!--Pubdog (talk) 09:52, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WV Capitol Complex[edit]

Thanks for the note! My first piece of advice: with a source, add a comment in the Comments column explaining that it's both capitol and mansion. Otherwise — because it's the Capitol Complex, not the Governor's Mansion Complex, I think it would be best to redirect it to a section of the Capitol article, which could include a note that the Governor's Mansion is also included, and then to include something in the Governor's Mansion article. The reason I reverted, by the way, is simply because the first column is supposed to display exactly what the official place name is, other than corrections for spelling and formatting. Nyttend (talk) 19:20, 19 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What you did is exactly what I asked :-) Nyttend (talk) 18:50, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Former store locations[edit]

Please do not continue to re-add former store locations to articles where these lists have been removed. Unless you are prepared to cite reliable sources establishing the notability of individual non-flagship store locations, then the locations are non-notable and not suitable for inclusion, and potentially unverifiable original research. SchuminWeb (Talk) 18:41, 20 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, I heard you started a lot of the NRHP articles for Maryland. How should I go about doing it for Scott County, Iowa? CTJF83Talk 19:15, 3 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, how do I use the Elkman tool? CTJF83Talk 01:26, 4 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your comment on Ctjf83's talk page[edit]

You said that you've been told that the NRHP name is sacrosanct and that it must never be changed. Can you show me an example? The only time that I had this topic addressed directly was here. Nyttend (talk) 23:53, 5 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for taking so long to reply; I was at a friend's wedding (as you may see if you check the Pittsburgh NRHP list in the next few days), so I was quite busy. What I meant was on the listings page: unless there's an error, we always leave the name as it is on the listings page. NOT trying to tell you that the articles should always use the NRHP title. For example, if Caleb's Discovery (Worcester County) were always referred to as the "Caleb Mansion" except by the NRHP, I think that the article would properly be named "Caleb Mansion". For this reason, when I created articles on "Covenanter Church" [Stafford, KS"] and "First Concrete Street in U.S." [Bellefontaine, OH], I entitled them Stafford Reformed Presbyterian Church and Court Avenue. However, I believe that the listings page should have its link formatted as [[Caleb Mansion|Caleb's Discovery]], since the listings page is essentially an NRHP list. Am I making sense, or did you mean something else? Sorry if this has been repetitive/offensive/annoying in any other way; I don't mean it. Nyttend (talk) 02:56, 7 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
As far as the spinning star — see your userpage. You definitely deserve it! Don't think that I'll give you anything that you ask me for :-) but I would have likely given this to you if I'd thought of it. I simply don't think of barnstars, and I believe that this is only the second one I've ever given in three years on Wikipedia. Nyttend (talk) 01:22, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Uhhh...do you mean that you're leaving Wikipedia? Or do you simply mean that when you leave, you'll be more satisfied? I hope you mean the latter :-) Nyttend (talk) 13:00, 9 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Replacing existing photos[edit]

Hi Pubdog, thank you for your thoughtful comments on my photos. Peggy Stewart House[edit]

Hmm, interesting...thanks for explaining, because I'd not noticed the etymology. Even aside from its naming format, I assumed that it should be where I put it because it's alphabetised under S at the list of NHLs. I think that it's best to keep it at S because of what it looks like: the reader might initially be surprised at seeing any of our lists not going strictly alphabetically, but once it is realised that we alphabetise by last name, it would likely be rather surprising to find something that looks like it got missed, even if it's a different situation. Seems to me that, if we alphabetise by P, we should italicise "Peggy Stewart" to make clear that it's not a personal name. What do you think? Nyttend (talk) 12:31, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think its fine to leave it as is.--Pubdog (talk) 16:13, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New York Post Offices on NRHP[edit]

I see you've created the Category:Post office buildings on the National Register of Historic Places in New York and moved one of my articles there. I did too. Are you going to do all Long Island Post Offices, or just choos random New York PO articles for this category? ----DanTD (talk) 23:01, 18 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, if you two are working on these, perhaps you'd want to link in the MPS document that applies for many of them (and shows in many of their infoboxes): "United States Post Offices in New York State - 1858 to 1943 - Thematic Resources". The MPS/TR document is at http://www.nr.nps.gov/multiples/64000597.pdf. For example, i'll do U.S. Post Office (Catskill, New York) right now, adding both an external link and a more or less properly constructed footnote reference, both of which you can copy if u like. doncram (talk) 18:15, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Ship vs. boat vs. ...[edit]

I see that you created this category and later blanked the page. A faster way to delete a category you've created yourself is to place {{db-author}} on the page. David Ferriero[edit]

Will you consider watchlisting David Ferriero and New York Public Library (NYPL)? I'm not sure what to make of unanticipated criticism of what I wrote about a living person in 2008. As you may know, Ferriero has been nominated to become the 10th Archivist of the United States. I'm puzzled by the complaint that the article appeared to have been drafted with an overly favorable bias; and I don't know how best to respond to the implied criticism of the NYPL article as well.

I recognize that Wikipedia's article about NYPL does fail to address the extraordinary changes in corporate culture which have been implemented during Ferriero's tenure; and by implication, I see how this points to a significant flaw in the Ferriero article.

I understand the problem, but I don't know what to do about it. I admit frankly that this is a little bit beyond my ability. --Tenmei (talk) 14:41, 3 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Consistency in spelling[edit]

Consistency is good! I've seen editors misspell the same word 5 different ways in the same article. I have enjoyed many of your photos, by the way. Happy editing!

Hamlet stubs[edit]

Hi, Pubdog. I see you created stub articles for several hamlets in Niagara County. I'm not sure they meet our criteria for inclusion. Usually hamlets have very little notability and are redirected to the town in which they are located. Powers T 14:44, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I hadn't realized there were so many, although a quick check of a few selected at random indicates that most of them are CDPs as well as hamlets, which seem to have more widely-accepted notability. I'm currently looking for someplace where these guidelines might be written down; right now it's just my perception which could easily be completely wrong. Powers T 17:10, 8 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
After perusing Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 59#Needs resolution: Are places inherently notable? and Wikipedia:Village pump (policy)/Archive 62#New level of geographical notability?, I think there seems to be a consensus that places need some sort of reliable sources to merit a separate article. Without census records (since they're not CDPs) or incorporation documentation (since they're not villages), I don't think these hamlets qualify. (Hamlets that were once incorporated villages might.) Granted, this is just my opinion, but I think it'd be better to keep these hamlets as just lists in the town articles. Powers T 02:53, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

disambiguation rules[edit]

Hi, i noticed your recent edits in the U.S. Post Office article. I see you're adding value by linking from the entries in the disambiguation page to articles which now exist. FYI, though, the rules for disambiguation pages (mostly at wp:MOSDAB) include that pipelinks should not be used to hide what a disambiguation item links to.

So, if there's an article at Old Post Office (Buffalo) which covers the NRHP there, and if that is the correct name to keep the article at, then disambiguation style policy is that the current NRHP-name-based entry for U.S. Post Office (Buffalo, New York) (which was a redlink) in the disambiguation page should be just changed to be the article name "Old Post Office (Buffalo)", rather than pipelinking to it from the NRHP name. Also, it would be helpful to set up a redirect from the NRHP name to the article name. I'll do that now for "U.S. Post Office (Buffalo, New York)".

In NRHP list-articles, on the other hand, I believe it's proper to show the NRHP name for the place, so the Buffalo NRHP list-article should still show "U.S. Post Office (Buffalo, New York)" and should redirect or pipelink to the existing article at "Old Post Office (Buffalo)". In NRHP list-articles, I am very pro-NRHP, but disambiguation articles are different.

A further question is whether "Old Post Office (Buffalo)" is the proper name for that article, which is not clear to me. I often am moving such articles to use (City, State) disambiguation rather than just (City) or just (State). And I don't see it justified in that article that it is named "Old Post Office". The NRHP infobox in the article should certainly show the NRHP name, instead, and the NRHP name should also appear in bold in the lede, IMO.

I am not really enamored of these rules, and of maintaining the U.S. Post Office dab page, but since u are editing there i thot i should try to share this much. By the way the post office names have been discussed in wt:NRHP archives a few times. There could be room for improvement, for renaming a whole bunch of them, perhaps in conjunction with the National Register itself, but I haven't cared to really go further with it. Pls. let me know if I can address any questions or help if u had energy to get places actually renamed by the National Register. doncram (talk) 17:47, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Further, i added the Buffalo one to the Old Post Office disambiguation page, and renamed the article to include (City, State), and I revised the entry for it in the U.S. Post Office page to what I think is in proper compliance with dab rules now: "U.S. Post Office (Buffalo, New York), now known as Old Post Office (Buffalo, New York), formerly tallest building in Buffalo and NRHP-listed". Whew! I leave it to you to revisit, perhaps, the other ones u edited. doncram (talk) 18:07, 18 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

coordinates for historic places[edit]

I'm impressed by the work you're doing in this area, and I'd appreciate it if you'd be more careful in supplying latitude and longitude coordinates for these places. In particular, the number of minutes (or seconds) of latitude (or longitude) cannot be 60, as it was in Belmont Hotel (Belmont, New York) and Alverson-Copeland House when you created them. I fix these when I find them, but I'm hoping that with this heads-up you can catch these errors earlier in the process. --Stepheng3 (talk) 01:45, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

NYS NRHPs[edit]

By the way, i notice one remaining redlink in National Register of Historic Places listings in Allegany County, New York. And I added MPS document links for the cobblestone and PO ones in Orleans county, but haven't gone thru the others. If you notice an mpsub in the infobox for a new article, you might want to consult wp:MPS and consider adding an external link to the PDF which should be available. And, about restricted access sites in New York State alone, I have copies of many/most NRHP documents which used to be available in the OPRHP system, but are no longer. I'd be willing to share to you, or if you point me to any archeological site ones in those counties I could add some info directly. Again, great work there! doncram (talk) 15:36, 20 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I appreciate that you made some efforts to paraphrase the text on Andrew Jackson Warner so it would no longer be a copyright infringement. Unfortunately, adding synonyms and minor alterations in the sentences won't relieve the plagiarism issue. As it is currently written, the text will need to be deleted as a copyright violation. You are welcome to rewrite the text using original language. The page on WP:Close paraphrasing can provide you with some explanations and help. In the long run, it is always better to simply write the text from scratch using your own words. If you have any questions, feel free to ask. Regards. NRHP nav box[edit]

Hi, Pubdog. It seems like this is a navbox, which according to guidelines should go at the bottom of articles. Is there some other documentation that advises otherwise for NRHP lists? Powers T 13:28, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I had always figured that it was formatted like a TOC and would be used like one. Oregon uses it like a navbox, however. I'm open to the idea of moving/reformating the box, but your welcome to bring it up at WT:NRHP and see what others think. Niagara Don't give up the ship 21:22, 24 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

ARCH links[edit]

I really don't know. We'll have to see once the system goes down by the end of the month, but I'd not be surprised if the links go bad. Admittedly, this won't make the information unverifiable — the online forms are copies of printed documents, after all — but it will likely mean plenty of work for us. The change in systems is mostly likely to have an impact on the forms for archaeological sites, since all but two archaeological sites are on ARCH, but almost none of them are on the new server. Nyttend (talk) 02:07, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Would you be willing to help with downloading nomination forms? Besides what Niagara and Ruhrfisch have done, I've gotten all forms for Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Forest, Lawrence, and Venango counties. Nyttend (talk) 02:15, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I've planned to do Fayette, Greene, and Washington, so they're now italicised. Thanks again! Nyttend (talk) 02:37, 9 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Because the current bold-and-italics setup on my talk page isn't too informative, I've put together a chart for the download of nomination forms here. Would you please check this page? Please note the "confirmed" column — if you've downloaded the forms that the chart says you have, please change the "N" to a "Y", and if you've done work that the chart says you've not or if you've not done work the chart says you have, please change the chart to reflect reality. Thanks! Nyttend (talk) 02:29, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I don't know why I didn't think to add the link on my talk page. Nyttend (talk) 02:46, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. Please note that "Number of Forms" is not quite accurate. I've found as I go through that there are a number of sites that do not have forms and other sites that share forms with multiple entries. Also, I've downloaded multiple PDF for single sites, particularly HDs with registration forms and inventories. Not a big deal, but the number of downloads won't match the number of forms. For instance, I've download 950 files related to 871 NHRP in 18 counties.--Pubdog (talk) 02:52, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Again, thanks; I've added a note about this to the top of the table. Don't know about you, but I've found a few sites with four separate forms each. Nyttend (talk) 03:06, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect ... thanks for making that important clarification.--Pubdog (talk) 03:10, 12 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[unindent] Don't worry :-) I've not done as much as Ruhrfisch has, but I've always saved the URLs for each file, so that we can continue to cite the online documents even if they get taken down. I don't really know any good reason for doing this except for the basic requirements for WP:V. However, I don't believe that this is the only way to cite them properly; since the forms are always available on paper, if you're writing an article with one of these as a source, you could cite them as if you had a paper copy of the form instead of a digital copy. See Zimmerman Kame for an example of how I format a paper copy. Nyttend (talk) 01:36, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Would you be willing to sign up for one or more letters for Philadelphia County? I've added a table at the signup page splitting Philadelphia by letter; as you can mark downloads by county for most counties, you can mark that you've downloaded or are downloading sites in Philadelphia that begin with A, or begin with Q, or anything else. I'm planning to add a table for Chester County as well, but I need to get to bed. Nyttend (talk) 06:14, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You're going so fast that Ruhrfisch won't get a chance to help with Philadelphia :-) Thanks for all the work! I'd download more right now, but I need to get ready for church; I'll see what more I can do when I get back this evening, if there's anything left to do :-) Nyttend (talk) 17:17, 13 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
What else would there be to download? Nyttend (talk) 13:15, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Smallbones signed up to get all of Chester County, but after downloading three townships, s/he has discovered that there's no time — "I bit off a bit more than I can chew (comfortably)", s/he tells me. Could you help to download some of its forms? I'm going to post a chart of all Chester County listings by municipality, and I've asked Smallbones to note which three municipalities are done. Nyttend (talk) 19:29, 14 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Downloads and duplicates[edit]

Thanks so much for your help with the downloads! Smallbones completed the final Chester County downloads last night, so everything is safe.

As someone who seems to be familiar with Buffalo, New York, would you look at Erie County Hall, Buffalo and County and City Hall? They seem to be the same article, but I'm not entirely sure. Nyttend (talk) 20:24, 15 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the update on Chester Co. By the way, what should I do with the forms I downloaded?

Yes, you are correct that the articles for Erie County Hall, Buffalo and County and City Hall are for the same building. A merge of them is appropriate. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.--Pubdog (talk) 02:13, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! I really don't know New York (only visited twice, and I was 13 the last time I was there), so I thought I'd defer to someone who knew Buffalo somewhat. Didn't hurt that you wrote the one article :-) As far as the forms — I'd advise you to save them for later, in case they aren't available at the CRGIS interface that is replacing ARCH. Of course, you could also check on the CRGIS page (https://www.dot7.state.pa.us/ce/login.asp) to see which forms are there and get rid of the ones that are there and that you don't want. Ruhrfisch and I began the download effort in order to ensure that we would have forms that weren't on CRGIS, so there's no real need to keep forms that turn out to be on CRGIS if you don't want them. Nyttend (talk) 02:17, 16 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Shenks Ferry and Monongahela peoples[edit]

When creating all those articles on MD NRHP sites, did you encounter many archaeological sites that turned out to be villages of the Monongahela or Shenks Ferry peoples? I've been creating articles lately on Pennsylvania archaeological sites (complete with {{Monongahela villages in Pennsylvania}}), and I'm soon to start on some sites from the Shenks Ferry people, so I'd be interested in seeing if there are already articles on other villages of this people. Sorry about taking an age to get back to you regarding the tags on Bridgewater Railroad Station‎ and Holland Patent Railroad Station. I've had a look and managed to deorphan the Holland Patent Railroad Station article, but can't find a required third link for Bridgewater Railroad Station. However I imagine at some point an article for Unadilla Valley Railway will be created with a link to Bridgewater Railroad Station at which point the orphan tag can come off as it only needs a link from one more article in order to no longer qualify as an orphan. Actually i think i may be able to add pics sometime for some of them, but I am mostly trying to be helpful in getting them started, and I hope you will further develop the ones i have touched. Often i am pretty low-energy in my stubbing; it would be great if you'd apply your writing skill to describe better the significance of each property as you do so well elsewhere. I do see it is a lot of work! Cheers, --doncram (talk) 23:54, 21 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the affirmation. I think I've exhausted available pics, so look forward to additional. Best wishes--Pubdog (talk) 00:39, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Great to see Madison county NRHP list all stubbed out! Hey, i wonder if you'd be interested/willing to do Suffolk or Nassau counties next, out of your apparent west-to-east order. Those counties and the wp:LONGI wikiproject could use some activity; others there might possibly then be energized and develop further. I expect that User:DanTD and others there would just be glad to see the activity. Let me know which you're working on next, anyhow, and I may try to help out occasionally as with Madison. --doncram (talk) 20:13, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Or jump ahead to do one of the Albany area counties, within wp:CAPDIS region, for similar reasoning; or one of the Wikipedia:WikiProject New York City area ones. Just one county in each wikiproject area would suffice. I did find it refreshing, providing good pressure, when you got into the WikiProject Syracuse area that i have some association with. --doncram (talk) 20:20, 26 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, i see ur almost done with List of RHPs in Chenango now. Great stuff!  :) I'm starting at the other end of the state, per Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Long Island#editing campaign for all NRHP places. I'm gonna try doing descriptions in the list-articles as i go. --doncram (talk) 21:08, 28 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the progress in Suffolk! I jumped in with Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Capital District#completing articles for all NRHP places in cap dis now, to put them on notice, too. Any which order u choose, your pace is incredible and it would seem likely u'll get to their area soon.  :) Cheers, --doncram (talk) 19:20, 4 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Arch urls for Bucks County, PA[edit]

Hello, I'm looking for the ARCH links (I think they still work) for National Register of Historic Places listings in Bucks County, Pennsylvania in particular for most of the Doylestown entries. There are some details I need to check about the following sites: Doylestown Historic District, Pugh Dungan House, Fordhook Farm, Oscar Hammerstein II Farm, Shaw Historic District, Tabor Home for Needy and Destitute Children, and Fretz Farm. Any help appreicated. Smallbones (talk) 15:30, 7 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much. I might ask again for some other sites - but only if you promise not to open every file twice to check :-) Smallbones (talk) 18:32, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Don't worry, my friend. Anything for a good cause. Just wish I could have found the last two!--Pubdog (talk) 22:53, 8 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Stillwater Bridge in New York[edit]

Federal Hill HD in Baltimore[edit]

Hey, i was creating/revising Federal Hill Historic District dab page and notice that Federal Hill Historic District (Baltimore, Maryland) is currently a red-link. I notice also that there is Federal Hill, Baltimore neighborhood article. Possibly the red-link should redirect to the neighborhood article or possibly it's worth a separate article. The neighborhood article does not mention the HD prominently though there is an infobox there. If to be combined, i think the full HD name should show in the lede, in bold. I dunno how much overlap there is. Could you possibly address one way or the other? Cheers, --doncram (talk) 16:52, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Doncram -- the list National Register of Historic Places listings in South and Southeast Baltimore already links Federal Hill Historic District (Baltimore, Maryland) to Federal Hill Historic District. I'm not sure whether I did that or another user. I'll see what I can do to make the relationship clearer. Best wishes --Pubdog (talk) 22:29, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, good. Well in general it is also good to set up a redirect from the NRHP name for a place, to the article about a place. Instead or in addition to using a pipelink in the NRHP list-article. Assuming you want to cover the HD in the neighborhood article, you or i should convert the redlink here into a redirect. And clean up the dab page. --doncram (talk) 23:40, 19 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I just made some changes to a redirect and at the dab page Federal Hill Historic District, and think it's now done. Thanks for changing the article. All done i think. --doncram (talk) 22:51, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

stubbing announcements[edit]

I am trying out mentioning what county/city lists where NRHP editors are working on creating good stub NRHP articles for, by mention in To Do list at Wikipedia:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/to do. I am currently willing/happy to mention working on National Register of Historic Places listings in New Haven, Connecticut, as it seems a couple others are contributing and/or watching, and I would welcome additional participation. I also was plugging along in the Albany County, New York list, but there is no one else active there, so I don't want to promote it more widely. The to-do box displays at top right of wt:NRHP now. If you would likewise welcome others' involvement for wherever you are working (National Register of Historic Places listings in Elk County, Pennsylvania?), please do make mention in that list. I would help out some, myself, wherever there's an open invitation. :) Thanks for your persisting with good-stubbing out all of National Register of Historic Places listings in Suffolk County, New York! It looks great, and I am glad to have jazzed the LI wikiproject a bit with that! --doncram (talk) 22:51, 13 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

MoCo pictures[edit]

Hello Pubdog,

No problem and anytime! I took some more today of Third Addition to Rockville and Old St. Mary's Church and Cemetery (they're up now) and I've added descriptions to almost all of the historic places (on some of them I just moved information from their main articles). I'm planning to take some more pictures of different areas when I have more free time.-(Wikipedian1234 (talk) 01:33, 26 May 2010 (UTC))[reply]

St. Mary's Cemetery Merge[edit]

Hello Pubdog,

Yesterday I found an article about St. Mary's cemetery and realized that all of the information within the article is discussed on the Third Addition to Rockville and Old St. Mary's Church and Cemetery article. I proposed a merge, though I don't think I'm going to get any outside opinions since no one really works on the Cemetery article (the last edit was in 2009). What would you think of a merge?

Thanks

You are now a Reviewer[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 23:19, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This weekend[edit]

I am going up to Buffalo with my son from Friday to Monday for a family (well, friend of a family) event and, of course, bringing my camera.

Since you've got the NRHP lists in Erie and Niagara counties all covered, I won't be doing that (I think instead I may concentrate on road pics, particularly the view from NY 429 up around Schimschack's in Pekin, the view referred to in the article intro.

But, I was also thinking, an opportunity presents itself. I'd like to go up into Orleans County and not only get a contemporary pic of the Cobblestone Historic District for the NY NHL list, I think I could probably get pics of all the listings as well, since so many are concentrated in Albion and Medina. And then maybe finish off the Genesee County listings on the way back (I'll probably go up there via Syracuse, and return via I-390).

If I do complete the images for those two lists, I'll get them up right away and it is possible we can not only get them to fully-illustrated status but maybe FL as well, if you'd like to help (granted, stubbing out the articles as you did recently will make that a lot easier).

Are you going to be in Buffalo? If so, we might be able to get together (It looks from the other stuff here like you'll be in the DC area, though). Let me know. Daniel Case (talk) 18:18, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi ... thanks for checking in. I live near DC and right now I'm actually near Myrtle Beach and happened to have a couple of hours to work on Horry County, South Carolina. Amaing how this project can become a vacation! Have a safe trip.--Pubdog (talk) 18:37, 22 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the appreciation. I like the way that list is shaping up too. I think within a couple of weeks I will have the Orleans list all finished; then I'll start finishing Genesee. Thanks for starting the stubs ... as much as I like doing that because of the potential for the Four Award, it did make this task easier. Daniel Case (talk) 14:59, 9 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Hey, Pubdog. I noticed that you upload your public domain images to Wikipedia, but it would benefit the project as a whole if you instead uploaded them to Wikimedia Commons. By uploading them to Commons, projects in other languages (and other projects like Wikibooks, Wikinews, and Wikiversity) can use your photos, which they can't if they stay here on Wikipedia. Would you consider uploading your images in the future to Commons? Thanks! Powers T 11:40, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please have a look at this draft RFC and let me know if you think it fully and fairly covers the issues involved. I intend to launch it within the next day or so. Cheers! bd2412 T 04:24, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The RFC is now open - please provide your opinion there! bd2412 T 19:21, 17 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

owner concerns[edit]

Hey, there's an owner or representative for the owner of an NRHP-listed house trying to remove info from its Wikipedia article, and to remove mention of the article from a dab page, and perhaps more. Edit summaries mention that the owner was not aware, did not give permission for Wikipedia article. Of course they don't have any legal basis to complain, and owners' permission is not needed or sought, and all the info is a matter of public record. But, i have some sympathy for their perception of invasion of privacy, and I see no reason why we shouldn't just help them. One concession which could be made would be to see to the complete deletion of the photo of the house, which you took and uploaded. Of course for that it is within U.S. freedom of panorama, and legally it does not have to be removed. But, it does include 2 vehicles in the photo which could seem unnecessarily revealing about the place / about the owner / whatever. Could you possibly please just request deletion of the photo? I think it is in Wikipedia and not yet in Commons, but i didn't check that for sure. I think, while mildly regrettable, it is not a great loss to lose that one illustration. I also offered in my edit summaries to be receptive, further, to the owner, if the owner or representative would contact me by email (from my Talk page) or by otherwise posting. Perhaps communication by email would be best, if the owner sees this, to keep the matter more private. --doncram (talk) 15:53, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This is an interesting issue (i.e., the privacy of a private home that has acquired some sort of notability) that I think is akin to the concerns that Wikipedia has related to BLPs. I think it would make sense to bring it up (as a generic concern) at the BLP noticeboard, with the aim of arriving at some sort of general policy. --Orlady (talk) 16:44, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If the owner is really that concerned to make it an issue, please go ahead and delete the photo. I assume this is for the Joseph D. Lyons House and accompanying photo? I wouldn't delete the article, just the photo and you have my permission to do so.--Pubdog (talk) 09:18, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! Yes it is about that house. In [this edit] i request deletion of the photo. Thanks for being understanding. I just think it is best in practice to help out with anyone's concern about information being published about them or their property. When i've walked or driven around historic districts with a camera I have encountered suspicion at times, and i decided i would always offer/agree not to take pics of any house where the owner/occupant seemed to have concern. Just so as not to add a worry to their lives. I do sympathize with those who don't like the invasion of Google camera trucks going through, too. So, again while it is not legally required, I think it's best just to delete the photo which the owner or rep tried to remove from display. About policy-making, I wouldn't want to make an absolute policy that we must respond to owner or others' objections, though. So i don't immediately want to ask for a policy-type decision at that notice-board. It does seem similar to BLP-type concerns, I agree, and I would be interested to know about policy-type discussions in this area. Thanks again. --doncram (talk) 18:38, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Terry-Ketcham Inn images[edit]

Are you planning on adding more images to the article on the Terry-Ketcham Inn? I have a third of a New York State Parks Department sign to the west of the main image, but it turned out too blurry. ----DanTD (talk) 16:12, 30 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have no photo to add.--Pubdog (talk) 09:19, 31 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cattaraugus County pics, and a possibility[edit]

Congratulations on getting the Cattaraugus County list fully illustrated (belatedly). As you can see it jibes nicely with the now fully-illustrated Orleans County list, which I have begun taking the steps to prepare for a peer review and eventual FLC.

One suggestion, though. Instead of my own pic for the Albion post office, I used one taken by a Flickr user who, months ago at my request, had changed the licensing on his images to allow us to use them, because it was in better conditions (see my pics for Albion's historic districts and you'll understand that it was raining at the time, so I much preferred the blue sky he got). He's taken a very nice picture of the Little Valley post office ... maybe we could use that instead? Daniel Case (talk) 13:46, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, much better than mine. Please go ahead and replace mine with the Flickr. Glad you could convince him to change licensing. Don't know if you've ever looked at DougTone, but he has some great pics, is constantly adding, and has correct licensing. Congrats again on Orleans Co! Forgot that you'd already hit the Genesee Co sites and added some on my recent trip back from Bflo. Please feel free to replace as needed. Best wishes--Pubdog (talk) 22:49, 16 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Went through the New York post offices and New Deal murals set. Pulled and uploaded to Wikipedia all the photos with appropriate licensing.--Pubdog (talk) 21:31, 17 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I was going to edit a few of them, but I can still do them (I just now feel duty bound to actually expand the articles if I do). I really like the one of the Amsterdam post office ... it's got FP potential, to me, if edited a bit.

Some of your Genesee pics are better than mine, some I'll replace. Funny you mentioned going up to Buffalo ... when will you be doing it again? I ask because just yesterday, the Orleans County list became un-fully illustrated. Perhaps when you next go back you could go to this newly-added house in the Town of Albion (actually, according to the listing info, it was added last year, but only announced now. See what I get for not regularly searching the Federal Register where these things are first announced? Daniel Case (talk) 13:59, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I'm in the same conundrum with both the Buffalo and Niagara County lists. Shame on me for not checking too! I'll see whether I can swing by Albion too. My next trip won't be until Nov, weather permitting.--Pubdog (talk) 14:09, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here's the location (my guess is it's one of those houses on the north side of the road. OPRHP hasn't posted the nomination at its site yet so I don't know for sure; if it hasn't by then you might want to take them both if the mailbox doesn't tell you conclusively).

If you do hit Orleans County on that trip, feel free to duplicate the pics I took in downtown Albion if the weather's nicer. Daniel Case (talk) 14:14, 18 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Genesee County[edit]

You're welcome! Since I haven't finished writing the articles, I will not be improving the list page (as I have tried to do with the Orleans County list) until I do ... not just the places I visited and photographed, but I will also upgrade the Batavia articles (Thanks a bunch for the huge favor you did by getting all of them ... it saved me an hour!)

I think I will probably use my pics of (at least) the Le Roy post office, the steamshovel and the Machpelah Cemetery (I got the mausoleum at a more direct angle, with the road leading up to it). I see you were out earlier in the morning, so you have the light coming in at a sharper angle (Actually, I may use both photos of the post office as it's difficult for just one to show all its features due to the trees).

At Stafford, I used a similar picture to yours of the old town hall building (not the new one, that's a modern brick one a short distance up 237), since mine didn't have the sun splotched all over it. But, I kept your other ones ... the light was better for the old IOOF building across the street. If you pass through that junction again you might want to see if you can get the brick house and the church's parish hall ... then we'd have pics of all the buildings in the district. Plus the hotel marker in the park on the northeast corner. I moved your pics to Commons and created a category there ... one of my long-term goals with all our HD articles is to put pictures of every contributing resource in the commons cat, even though we won't be using them in the article (See what UpstateNYer did for Clinton Avenue Historic District, for instance). It's in keeping with the goal of Commons to make it a free media repository for every possible use, not just Wikimedia projects (so any pictures you didn't put there, I'll move to Commons as well).

And speaking of post offices, now that I finished uploading pics and expanding the Spring Valley and Pearl River post offices, thereby finishing all five in Rockland County, I'm wondering if we might not have enough of the 257 in that MPS to create a separate list article for it.

I'm not saying we should do this tomorrow ... I think a separate list would be justified only if we have at least a third of the total (including all the New York City ones, which we have dented less than upstate). But I do have about a dozen or so more in my pipeline, and if we could get an accurate count of how many of these we have actual pics of then we could decide what to do next. Daniel Case (talk) 14:16, 1 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pubdog, we own the house in Cattaraugus County on the Historic Register, 520 Hostageh Rd. I have a picture of the front, which is much more flattering than the current picture. Rockcity girlRockcitygirl (talk) 23:45, 22 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Long Island NRHP locations[edit]

Hey, you're welcome. I knew I had to move a lot of the post offices to specific categories, but I didn't expect to create any. Regarding the Saint James District, while it says it's only located on NY 25A, at least two of the sites mentioned (St. James LIRR station, and the General Store), are located off of Route 25A. I tried to go to the NRHP site, but it didn't give me any details on other streets within the district. You're not going to believe this, but when I took those pictures of St. James station, I walked all the way from that station to Smithtown Station! I couldn't get a bus, or a cab, or even hitchhike! ----DanTD (talk) 23:10, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Oatka Creek[edit]

You're welcome! It was a natural for the article as it shows the only impoundment on the whole creek.

If you're interested in getting more Oatka-related pics, I'd love to have a Wyoming Valley pic, like looking north from the Warsaw area, probably from US 20A just east of the village at the crest of the hill where you can see north. There's some waterfalls on the creek south of Warsaw, maybe near Rock Glen, that would work as well (I don't think the woman who took that picture will be amenable to changing the licensing, alas). In Buffalo[edit]

You might want to get pictures of some properties in the city for which SHPO will be considering sending on to the NPS at its meeting next month: Buffalo Seminary (we should have a pic in any event), The 20th Century Club at 595 Delaware Avenue, and the University Park Historic District (complicated description; seems to me your best bet would be those first two blocks of Niagara Falls Boulevard with the cobblestones. In good light.

It's OK if you can't get up there to Orleans County. If you go through Genesee County on your trip back to the DC area (we always did, but we lived north of the city so cutting down 219 didn't make as much sense ... YMMV, so to speak), maybe you could go through Le Roy again and see about maybe more shots at Machpelah Cemetery, like that other mausoleum near the front, and perhaps some of the distinctive monuments mentioned.

Also, in that direction, Caledonia Fish Hatchery will probably also be nominated to the Register. I suspect the state ultimately wants to get it to NHL status, as it's the first fish hatchery not just in the country but the entire Western Hemisphere. There are some pics in the nom that you could probably emulate (most of the buildings are original, and there's a plaque to Seth Green). It's easy to get to, on Route 36 north of the village of Caledonia just south of the Monroe County line. Daniel Case (talk) 15:15, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up. Can probably get the Buffalo pics tomorrow morning. Looking more like I can swing up to get the house in Orleans Co.--Pubdog (talk) 23:34, 8 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Got pics of all Bflo sites. Gates House this AM. You should know the fog was thick this AM in Orleans Co. Miraculously, the sun broke through just as I approached the Gates House and got descent pics. Hope they're up to your standards.--Pubdog (talk) 01:01, 11 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

article names[edit]

I noticed and am planning to reverse several article name changes, which had moved articles about NRHP-listed places in the Oyster Bay, New York area from their NRHP listing name to some other name, in my view without justification. I commented about this at Talk:House at 103 Roslyn Avenue#article name. Could you possibly please discuss there? Thanks. Keep up the good work editing! --doncram (talk) 16:35, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, I have listed this article at the copyright problems noticeboard. It appears to be a copy of a non-public domain source. US federal government sources are public domain, but state government sources rarely are. The current website of the West Virginian governor. --Mkativerata (talk) 22:51, 3 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for taking the picture! As you can see I have now developed the article. This means I can resume working on developing the Orleans County NRHP list for an eventual FLC. I will also be working in the coming weeks on developing and expanding the Batavia articles so that all the Genesee ones are as complete as the Orleans ones, for an eventual FLC on that list too.

In both cases your contributions have been invaluable, both photographically and as the initial stubber of the articles. I will make sure you get some credit should they get starred.

P.S. My photo of the Marion Steam Shovel made QI at Commons! That's only the second time I've ever gotten that one. Daniel Case (talk) 16:48, 4 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Saratoga[edit]

U sure do keep moving along. I drafted this version of one Saratoga page, as a test run of an article generator based off NRIS. Not great yet. I manually edited it further to clean it up but did not attempt to fully/fairly characterise the place, the way u do, so i would be pleased to see u fix it up further. I am wondering if i can deliver useful starter articles for u in some next county u might be turning to, maybe Schenectady? --doncram (talk) 19:42, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I concur that this is an OK HD article, but not great. It's missing a number of essential pieces. If you can, please include the NRHP template for New York; one less thing to modify. Stub should also reference the county -- i.e. SaratogaNY-NRHP-stub Also, I'm not sure why there were no coords included in the infobox because they are in Elkman NRHP infobox tool. Therefore, if I saw this I would have to start from scratch. Thanks for running it by me.--Pubdog (talk) 23:42, 13 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. In the semi-automated system i have developed so far, I don't yet have coordinates included, so that currently requires a manual edit copying from Elkman output. Also my output requires some tidying to remove spaces and join lines and otherwise, because i am lacking skill in my programming. I implemented the 3 changes u suggest (NRHP template for New York; county stub tag; and NYS OPRHP as publisher of NRHP nom doc). See this first cut and this version after tidying and looking up NYS OPRHP and MPS document numbers for the Delanson Historic District in Schenectady. I could do that level of prep work for you, for any county or other set of articles that you like. About Delanson, could you further fix that up (else i need to)? --doncram (talk) 15:56, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Duane Mansion is another which i would appreciate if you could look at. It's covered by the same MPS/MRA document, and i've now captured a full citation with authors and date etc. to appear in any additional articles of that MRA. --doncram (talk) 16:46, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Here are drafts for all the Schenectady NRHP articles, currently mostly redlinks. I'd be grateful if u could try that out, and i'd be interested to hear if you'd choose to use those at all. They don't yet have coords (which have to be added manually or pasted over from Elkman output), but i wonder if they now have enough else that u'd choose to start with them. I'm not expecting that you would, because i think you have ur own process worked out very well. Comments either way would be welcome.
BTW, in Schenectady there are 6 MPS/MRA's relevant, and the generated articles have MPS doc refs filled out for the 33 Duanesburg MRA ones. The other MPSs (and counts) are Boss Jones TR (4), US Post Offices in New York State, 1858-1943, TR (2), Army National Guard Armories in New York State MPS (1), Lustron Houses in New York MPS (1), Movie Palaces of the Tri-Cities TR (1). --doncram (talk) 23:14, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Tried it out. Used the first and have done as I have for most articles like this --- used the first as a template and updated with appropriate info. Big detraction is not having the coords, also defaultsort, and some basic categories. Also, as you know, I've developed my own comfortable approach to these stubs which yours don't quite fit. Don't take as a total negative ... maybe I'm used to my own thing.--Pubdog (talk) 01:19, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for feedback. I wonder if you'd take a look again, if i could try to set up /drafts for you for another county, after i get the newly available new version of NRIS loaded (which spans into July 2010), and after i include coverage for coordinates.
I've never paid any attention to Defaultsort at all, but now i notice it provides a good ordering in categories like Category:Houses in Schenectady County, New York (after i manually fix defaultsort for one that Daniel Case did!). I'll try to address it in future NRHP batch-generation batches.
About basic categories, i see that the Schenectady /drafts are messed up, e.g. my draft for Talk:National Register of Historic Places listings in Schenectady County, New York/drafts#Chapman Farmhouse does not have category added for its Greek Revival architecture, and that the architecture list in the infobox would require editing for proper display. I fixed those glitches already in the batch-generator program as applied to a later county (Scott County, Iowa) and the basic categories would work better in any future batches.
Actually, come to think of it, maybe something useful for u would be if I would run a /drafts batch for just the newly covered NRIS items, i.e. those listed between March 13, 2009 and July 7, 2010. I could do one /drafts report for these ones in New York, sorted by county. I am just assuming you'd be willing to go back and address those for counties you've done, where u quite reasonably left redlinks for most of those. It will take me a while to get such a report ready. --doncram (talk) 14:58, 23 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Westchester[edit]

I noticed u at work in Westchester now, because i was working on some Ralph Adams Cram architect stuff, and saw your nice new article on Rehoboth (Chappaqua, New York). I'd be grateful if u could consider Westchester /draft articles now at /drafts.

The output is improved, though still lacking coordinates and not yet using the NRIS 2010 data. Among other changes, the batch-generator program now treats "No style listed" and "Other" architecture styles better in most cases (at least when there are not additional architectural styles given). Categories working better. I'd appreciate if u noticed any further basic categories improvements that would be helpful, i.e. any cases where Elkman's output gives something more useful. You're the best possible commentator for me as you r the only editor creating many NRHP articles at good stub level. I'd love to get this working well so that it actually helps you, besides just helping future others, and i hope it is getting close.

To check recent changes of articles covered in this Westchester batch: Recent changes, which is based on corresponding /draftnames. --doncram (talk) 19:26, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Within this Westchester batch there are 11 drafts with MPS/MRA for "US Post Offices in New York State, 1858-1943, TR", 4 drafts with "Greeley, Horace TR", 3 drafts with "Hudson Highlands MRA", 3 with "Yonkers Public Bath House TR", and 1 with "Hudson River Lighthouses TR". I have the Post Office drafts getting full references. --doncram (talk) 19:34, 26 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to join WikiProject United States[edit]

Hello, Pubdog! WikiProject United States, an outreach effort supporting development of United States related articles in Wikipedia, has recently been restarted after a long period of inactivity. As a user who has shown an interest in United States related topics we wanted to invite you to join us in developing content relating to the United States. If you are interested please add your Username and area of interest to the members page here. Thank you!!!

--Kumioko (talk) 20:49, 4 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Pubdog,

It looks like we both share an interest in historic Post Offices. I'm not sure it makes sense to create a double-category structure for most states as we group these. For instance, Arizona now has general post office category with a sub-cat for those listed on the NRHP. This makes sense conceptually as there are mabye 500 post office in Arizona and a subset of 20 are on the National Register. But, in practice all of the current articles in WikiPedia are about the NRHP post offices. I would favor only creating the post offices by state category if there are non-NHRP articles, like with New York. Just a suggestion. RevelationDirect (talk) 11:44, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCommons links[edit]

The WikiCommons links have a shortcoming because they show up as blue even if there is nothing there. I added quite a few of these bad links before I realized you had to click on them or go to WikiCommons to see if there was an image library by that name. re: Category:Clubhouses on the National Register of Historic Places in Arizona[edit]

I noticed you were involved in a minor edit/revert exchange over how to categorize the Polly Rosembaum building in Phoenix. I have left a note on the talk page of the category above for your consideration. Blueboar (talk) 17:01, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Possible Overcategorization for Smaller States with NRHP[edit]

Hi Pubdog, Some of the state-level categories you've created for the National Register of Historic Places seem to be small cat overcategorization to me. My view may be skewed from Delaware though because most of my state's categories are small. There is an exception to the small category if the overall structure is agreed upon so I posted a notice on the WikiProject page to solicit feedback and establish a consensus. Please feel free to contribute to that conversation. Thanks. RevelationDirect (talk) 02:47, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

road categories[edit]

I notice you have removed state NHRP categories from various articles, such as National Road and Natchez Trace. What is your justification here? When a state road NHRP category does not exist, it can be created; or the article is simply left at the state NHRP level. The article is not simply left with no connection to the state which the road passes through. The same would be true of any and all NRHP articles if you are making similar changes elsewhere. Hmains (talk) 20:38, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hmains --- a concern was raised that I had overcategorized the road subcategories. I returned them to the general Roads on the National Register of Historic Places category to address this concern.--Pubdog (talk) 21:29, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe so, but the net result is that roads now have no connection the the state NRHP categories that they used to be in and should still be in. Look at the results in the two examples I provided. I suppose that the roads might exist in the general Roads on NRHP if they are in multiple states, but they still must be in a state NRHP. Thanks. Hmains (talk) 22:25, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Hmains ... I created the state categories yesterday and got dinged for it being an overcategorization problem. Thanks for the support, but I felt obligated to retract given the discussion on State-by-state Categories for every type of building--Pubdog (talk) 23:43, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, I hope you do not undertake to delete/depoplate your categories. Most are needed as part of a pattern Hmains (talk) 02:29, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hotcat[edit]

There is a tool called HotCat that I didn't start using until recently but now I'm a convert. It lets you edit categories by going to the bottom of the page and clicking on pluses and minuses (instead of editing the whole article), verifies that the cat exists (you can't preview cats) and automatically provides a detailed edit summary. It's under My Preferences at the top of the page and then the Gadgets tab on the far right.

Even though I had concerns that you were editing cats too fast in the past, I don't want to see you waste time going forward. (-: 00:03, 31 January 2011 (UTC)

category trees[edit]

"category trees not appropriate when all the categories already fit on the first/only page" Only needed when we cannot see all the categories on the first page of the parent category. Thanks. Hmains (talk) 02:31, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Got it, thanks!

New NRHP articles[edit]

If the year of completion is know, can you use something like Category:Buildings and structures completed in 1734 which is more specific then Category:1734 architecture? If a precise year is not know, then Category:Buildings and structures completed in the 18th century also works. Vegaswikian (talk) 01:31, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Number format for height of a house in stories[edit]

Yesterday I changed the number format in a few dozen articles, and, since you created most of them, I thought I would get your opinion before I did hundreds more. Borderside is a good example . I changed "It was a two and one-half story, with three story tower, Italianate style brick structure" to "It was a 2+12-story, with 3-story tower, Italianate style brick structure". The compound modifier with a number and "story" calls for a hyphen ("-story"), and the use of numerals fits better with WP:ORDINAL, which says "single-digit whole numbers from zero to nine are spelled out in words" (but not fractional numbers) and "Simple fractions are normally spelled out; use the fraction form ... if they are mixed with whole numerals". Also, to go along with "Comparable quantities should be all spelled out or all figures", I changed "three story" to "3-story". I think it is easier to read "2+12" as a numeral, and makes it easier to see that "2+12-story" modifies "structure". Do you have any thoughts or suggestions? Chris the speller yack 14:53, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looks good to me. I'll try to incorporate in future articles. Sorry about the variation from standards.--Pubdog (talk) 15:05, 8 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing to feel sorry about. The guidelines are stinkin' complicated, and they change over time. Your stuff was good then and it's good now. Very few editors get the hyphenation right on compound modifiers, and some bark when I fix them, but doing business with you has been a pleasure. Happy editing! Go ahead anytime, with my pics[edit]

Gosh, yes. I changed this one. Yours is clearly much better. Please feel free to go ahead and change out pics anytime if you think yours are better or more current. Especially in hugely obvious cases like this one, where when I took the picture it was in the midst of rehab that's clearly been finished now. I have a huge backlog, and I stare at the computer and think all day at work and the last thing I want to do is stare at it and think when I get home, so it's not getting any smaller. Sigh. Someday. Preparation pays off[edit]

Four new listings for Buffalo announced yesterday. Thanks to your advance work, I was able to do a nice quick improvement to Twentieth Century Club (Buffalo, New York), and some more for Buffalo Seminary (the alma mater of some of my wife's friends, BTW). So you only need to get pics for the firehouse on Jersey Street and University Park. Daniel Case (talk) 15:58, 21 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the heads up! I had taken the pic File:University Presbyterian Church Buffalo NY Nov10.JPG in anticipation of the University Park listing, but alas the church is excluded. More coming ...[edit]

From NYSOPRHP's site, the latest list of noms under consideration (to be discussed next month). It's got a lot from Buffalo (looks like they're starting a Black Rock MPS, with long topsheet), and one up near Lockport.)

Thanks for the leads up. Do you have any idea where the NRHP docs that used to be there have gone to? For instance, Twentieth Century Club is no longer there and its not in the OPRHP database. So now I have dead links for a bunch of recent articles. I can't find an email at OPRHP to contact. Any ideas?--Pubdog (talk) 10:17, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

NRHP stubs[edit]

Hey, Pubdog. I see you create a large number of stubs for WP:NRHP (I usually go through and assess all the new articles in the project) but I don't know if you get too involved with the nuances of the project and/or certain people involved, but if you have even glanced at the project talk page or other discussion pages, you're sure to have come across a bit of negativity towards creating stubs in the project. Many times, this negativity (sometimes outright anger, and I admit, many times from myself) is pointed specifically at a certain user who I will refrain from naming but about whom you probably know I am speaking. I would just like to point out the fact that I have never seen any of that negativity directed towards you or the stubs you create, and I think that is very honourable. I would just like to congratulate you for being able to churn out a massive amount of stubs with scant–though pertinent–information on them and still avoid the hurrah that frequently arises in the project. I can only wish that unnamed user would take a page from your playbook. Job well done, sir (or madam?). Job well done :).--Dudemanfellabra (talk) 22:40, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Downtown Ossining pics[edit]

Thanks. I have some of my own from the day I was there that might work as well. Doug's pictures were very effective for Ossining (I think I may use yet more) as he got a lot of the important properties in the district and got them close up enough that they could be identified and they were well-lit. I have sometimes put my own pics in the lead (see Congregation B'nai Israel Synagogue for one) over Doug's, if they were better (I've met him in person, and he just takes photos, he's not on the lookout for the best possible pic the way I am) but here there's no need. (also see, from the same county, District 10 School ... I couldn't have taken a better pic if I tried). Daniel Case (talk) 03:17, 22 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Back to Wellsburg[edit]

At the end of next week, I'll be headed to Homecoming at my alma mater, and depending on my schedule, I may be able to get photos in the Northern Panhandle on the way back to Indiana. I'm sorry that I didn't finish resolving the Wellsburg issue (I was in Kentucky at that time, so my mind was elsewhere occupied), but I'd like to help resolve it before I go. Could you produce a small map of what you believe the houses to be? A simple line drawing in the .png format showing the street and the houses with their names and addresses will work, as would an ASCII artwork showing the same thing. When you've created the map, please put it in my sandbox (if you do ASCII, please delete everything that's in there right now for the sake of simplicity) and leave a note at my talk page. Thanks so much for the help! Nyttend (talk) 12:02, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

By "the houses" I meant all the properties in the Prospect Avenue MRA, except of course for the cemetery. Nyttend (talk) 12:14, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi buddy ... I'd really like to help you out with this request, but I'm afraid I don't have what you want. Have a great time on your visit!--Pubdog (talk) 23:36, 20 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hm, I'm confused. Back in July, if I understood you rightly, you had a clear idea of which houses were truly which, including which ones I'd photographed correctly, which ones I'd photographed incorrectly, and which ones I'd not photographed at all. Couldn't you produce a map with this information in a few minutes in Windows Paint? Nyttend (talk) 00:41, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the reminder of the issue. I'm afraid I don't know the town well enough to map out the specific properties and I don't think it's necessary. My "knowledge" is based on the descriptions of the respective properties provided in the individual NRHP nominations, and that the images in the county list did not match the images supplied there. My confusion arose when writing the stub for Harry and Louisiana Beall Paull Mansion, and the image in the list did not match that in the NRHP nomination. The image currently associated with the Harry and Louisiana Beall Paull Mansion on National Register of Historic Places listings in Brooke County, West Virginia looks exactly like the image of the Lewis Hall Mansion and matches the description in the NRHP nomination. There's always the possibility that they are switched in the nominations. Since you are "on the ground" you would know best.--Pubdog (talk) 01:03, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the details. Just one more question — other than those two, do you believe that I properly identified all the photos that I got, or are there other potential problems of which you're aware? Nyttend (talk) 04:29, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Everything else looks good.--Pubdog (talk) 09:25, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
See, that's the whole reason that I asked you for a map — I thought that there were problems with several different houses, not just those two. That's why I thought you would be able to produce a simple map, since I knew you'd had a solid idea of all the houses that were incorrect. Thanks again for the help; depending on my schedule (I have to go all the way from Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania to Bloomington, Indiana on Monday), I may or may not be able to do it, but it's my goal to get the Brooke County list to fully-illustrated. Nyttend (talk) 12:13, 29 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Images have been added for all sites. I only got the gateposts at Vancroft — I saw the "Private Property" notice on the posts and feared to go any farther, completely forgetting that it was a nursing home and thus a place where guests are expected. By the way, I've found one West Virginia listing without an article: National Road Corridor Historic District in Wheeling. Nyttend (talk) 13:36, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Template:New York NRHP topnav[edit]

Hi Pubdog. I respectfully disagree with your addition of {{New York NRHP topnav}} to NY NRHP pages. I have two issues with it:

  1. Placing the template on the top of articles doesn't make sense because the links in the template have close to nothing in common with the article content.
  2. {{National Register of Historic Places in New York}} contains all the information you've put in your new template, but it follows the standard look and feel of existing infoboxes. While it has taken a while for this NY-specific box to take hold and replace the general US one, it clearly fills the niche I think you're trying to fill.

I can appreciate the efforts, but I am removing the box from the two NRHP pages on my watchlist that you've tagged: National Register of Historic Places listings in Albany, New York and National Register of Historic Places listings in Rensselaer County, New York. I'm interested in your viewpoint on this. (Either respond on my talk or leave me a talkback template.) upstateNYer 15:04, 23 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Even in the WV articles, I still think it's overkill because WV has {{National Register of Historic Places in West Virginia}}. The information that the two templates contain is redundant. {{National Register of Historic Places in West Virginia}} follows the pattern of other bottom-of-an-article navboxes both in form and function, as does the NY one. These are just my opinions. I'll comment at WT:NRHP, where I see you've already raised idea for comment. upstateNYer 03:34, 24 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Compliments and a question[edit]

Compliments, again, on your nice series of NRHP stubs. I do have a question about some of the historic district articles, though. Is there a particular reason why Lemont Historic District, say, is separate from Lemont, Pennsylvania? It seems to me that once the article is expanded, there won't be much about the history of Lemont that isn't covered by the historic district. I can understand the separation for larger municipalities, but other than the difficulty of fusing the infoboxes, is there any particular rationale to separate them for small towns of that sort? John W. Dunn (architect)[edit]

Hi Pubdog -- In starting up article on West Virginia builder and architect John W. Dunn (architect), i put a sentence with a link into several WV articles you created recently. Would you be interested in helping develop the architect article a bit, and in improving the summary treatment in each of your articles, from their NRHP noms? I'll plug away on it later, anyhow. Please consider the architect article and the now-linked NRHP articles as works-in-progress with respect to this. Cheers, --doncram 16:46, 15 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, i get that a lot (confusion btwn mine & daniel case's writing). :) All done in the linked NRHP articles. The architect/builder article could be more developed, but I think all are better now for having bits about Dunn and for being linked together. --doncram 17:28, 16 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Two WNY vets' hospital NRHP listings pending[edit]

Today's pending NRHP list includes two veterans' hospitals in the WNY/Finger Lakes region you might be able to photograph at some point:

Batavia Veterans Administration Hospital, 222 Richmond Avenue, Batavia.

(this would be the first addition to the Genesee County list in quite a while).

and

Canandaigua Veterans Hospital Historic District, 400 Fort Hill Avenue, Canandaigua.

Also, The Huyler Building at 374 Delaware Avenue, and the Robertson–Cataract Electric Building at 100 and 126 S. Elmwood in Buffalo both got announced as listed today. Daniel Case (talk) 19:03, 17 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

More new WNY noms announced[edit]

The state recently announced the next batch of noms it would be discussing, and wow ... again there'll be a lot in WNY.

First, near where I used to live in Clarence is the Automobile Club of Buffalo building. Not hard to shoot as, per the nom, it's in Clarence's town park on Main Street (i.e., Route 5). You might even be able to get inside and match the interior shot in the nom.

In Buffalo itself:

Two eventual new additions to the Orleans County list:

  • Clarendon Stone Store, 16301 East Lee Road, or about roughly where routes 31A and 237 meet (Damn! I think I saw this when I stopped at the convenience store there in June 2010, and wondered why it wasn't on the Register. But then I was trying to cover the whole county in an afternoon and didn't feel I had the time).
  • Payjack Chevrolet Building, 320 North Main Street, Medina (while this one isn't too far from Medina's Main Street HD, I would never have pegged it for eventual inclusion. But read the nom. If accepted it would be the youngest building on Orleans' list).

And way the hell out in the depths of Wyoming County is this:

Mid-Penna excursion[edit]

Pub:

I gotta say I'm running into your work more often than usual following my excursion in Lancaster, York and Franklin Counties. I don't mean to leave little chores for you to clean up, just trying to get the best stuff into Wikipedia first. This trip was especially nice in that, thanks to you, the PHMC files were available via articles via my Mac and wifi seemed to be more more available than I'd remembered before while on the road. I don't know if you know about (or care) but the CGRIS site is Mac-unfriendly - essentially I can't search without an old unsupported Explorer browser - which hardly works anyway - so I don't have it on my laptop.

So keep on doing the stuff you're doing - I just wanted to say it's noticed and very helpful and I have no complaints on anything. Smallbones (talk) 23:12, 2 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thx bones ... and all your pics are exceptional! I appreciate the kind comments I've been pecking away at PA for the last number of months. Is there a way to set up the CRGIS refs so they work better on Macs too? I was working on these based on the guidance provided.--Pubdog (talk) 02:47, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe include a link (under external links?) to a PHMC photo - there are always a few sites where I scratch my head and say "could that possibly be the site?" But that would just be icing on the cake. Smallbones (talk) 03:49, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi --- I've tried doing that, but the CRGIS site blocks direct access to the photos. It only allows direct access to the NRHP nomination forms, without also separately logging into the system.--Pubdog (talk) 11:21, 3 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's always nice to know that somebody is watching! I'd guess that the ship at Fell's Point, the Bancroft, is no longer there - in which case the South-southeast section is complete. The US 40 - National Highway markers are probably not there and I'm not sure about all the historic districts, but I'll give it a shot. Any help and/or feedback always appreciated. Thanks again. Waverly, New York Junior and Senior High School[edit]

In reference to your recent addition to the Waverly, New York page: I'm wondering if calling the Mary Muldoon school "Waverly Junior and Senior High School" would be confusing as that school is no longer in use, and actually being confirmed into apartments. The current Junio-Senior HS is obviously not listed as a historic landmark. I'll post this on the Waverly talk page as well. I just wanted to ask you personally as well. --FencesSBX (talk) 01:13, 5 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

More pending WNY noms[edit]

Today the list for the September HOB meeting was put up. There's a few more in the Buffalo area:

  • Elmwood Historic District. Wow! 296 acres (120 ha), basically the blocks between Elmwood and Richmond from Buff State down to almost Symphony Circle, of one of the most interesting areas of Buffalo. A 12 MB nomination form, and almost 2,000 contributing properties, making it the largest in the city and one of the largest in the state by that measure. Somehow I don't think you'll be hurting for representative photo opportunities ... in fact, if I were you and I had the time, I'd just walk around with a list of the more interesting properties culled from the nom and shoot as many as I could, then upload to Commons. Especially now that WLM is underway.
  • Hamburg Main Street Historic District. Much smaller ... just two blocks. I guess the state is no longer just going with the "Main Street Historic District" naming convention, since we have so many already.
  • The Dick Block, 64 Webster St., North Tonawanda. I can just see the vandalism already (but then that's not a problem for this article.
  • William Taylor House, 97 South Main Street, Middleport. Wish I had been able to foresee that this would be nominated when I was last in Middleport two years ago
  • Turner Brothers Building (a/k/a American Household Storage Company), 295 Niagara Street. Just from the name I knew this was in Buffalo. Daniel Case (talk) 16:43, 3 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the heads up! Should be back soon.--Pubdog (talk) 00:08, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

September 2013[edit]

Looks like there aren't any in the Niagara Frontier this time around, but if you get down to the Southern Tier in this crisp fall weather there's Cattaraugus Village Commercial Historic District, 9–52 Main Street, 1–17 Washington Street and 14 Waverly Place. Daniel Case (talk) 04:56, 18 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

December 2013[edit]

Only one in Buffalo this time around:

  • Houk Manufacturing Company aka Wire Wheel Corp. of America, Superior Motor Co., McCue Factory. 300-320 Grote Street, 1686-1700 Elmwood Avenue. Apparently the first factory to make wire wheels in the country.

One more in the immediate Buffalo area from this batch:

Over near Rochester:

two Rosenwald Schools in Maryland[edit]

Hi, i have started developing List of Rosenwald schools including listing Lula G. Scott Community Center and Queenstown Rosenwald School, which are two articles with pics that you created. I am a bit confused with them, as maybe there is a typo in lead of first one calling it the other's name? I do think they are separate places, right. Your attention to these 2 articles and possibly also to short descriptions for them in the list-article would be appreciated. :) --doncram 10:21, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed ... thanks for catching that!--Pubdog (talk) 10:39, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I guess it was just a typo then. Thanks.
I notice in your contributions that you seem to be marching through creation of Pennsylvania NRHP articles now. I haven't had much success accessing the NRHP nom docs for Pennsylvania, and it is great that you are taking that on and making those accessible for all readers, as well as making the nice starter articles.
By the way, you may have noticed occasional edits to New York State NRHP articles you started, adding mentions of architect/builder/engineer names and/or wikilinking existing mentions. For example for Allan Teator Road Stone Arch Bridge and five other NYS articles, now linking to new Jeremiah Cunningham article started by me and developed up to a very good short article by User:Cbl62. I assume you're glad to see this. I have been working off of Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Register of Historic Places/Architects2009a, a list of architects/builders/engineers having 5 or more NRHP works, mostly. I think i started articles for architects in Utica and in Rochester, not too long ago. I do know that you've sometimes created architect articles, too. I happen to think that these architect/builder/engineer articles are really valuable, and that starting and linking them in really adds a lot to the individual NRHP articles, even when the person article is started at a pretty rudimentary level. And then if cbl62 is invited to come along, he is accessing a lot of subscription and off-line sources plus using some great editing skills to improve them. Inviting him or otherwise calling attention to an architect/builder/engineer article started, or needed, is something to keep in mind. Anyhow, keep up the good work as always. cheers, --doncram 14:52, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Doncram --- noticed the excellent architect articles and appreciate your having created them! Thanks for the kind comments and encouragement.--Pubdog (talk) 16:12, 16 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Maryland NRHP sources and referencing[edit]

Hi Pubdog. Could you possibly please add to the Maryland section within wp:NRHPhelp, about how to find the Maryland summaries that you used in so many articles, and provide an example reference perhaps. And comment about how to use or reference the search system that Maryland Inventory of Historic Properties now offers (linked from the NRHPhelp). I was able to run the search but had trouble just now, trying to figure out how to link to anything, when doing some research relating to the Washington Monument in Boonsboro. See Talk:Architects of the National Park Service#removed items for where i am trying a reference to the NRHP document for it. If i can't link to the document though (as I think i cannot, i can only search for it and see it, but there is no permanent link i think), then how should I create a reference to put into the article? I bet there might have been info at the wp:NRHPhelp before about how to find your way to the Maryland summaries, but if so it oughta be restored. Could you help, please? Thanks --doncram 20:22, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stub categories[edit]

Hi Pubdog,

I noticed you created three stub categories for Pennsylvania NRHP. Just letting you know, stub categories should be proposed first at WP:WSS/P and generally do not get created until there are enough articles to justify it, usually 60. Also, the way in which you added these removed the articles from the Category:Pennsylvania Registered Historic Place stubs‎ tree. Since you also seem to be creating lots of these articles right now (good job btw!) I will leave them alone and fix up the templates around them and hope they get (close) to 60, but don't be surprised if someone takes them to CfD. --Qetuth (talk) 09:54, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Correction, I now notice you created the templates as well, not took them out of the NRHP cat. Same proposal system applies, but these would have been speedy created. --Qetuth (talk) 10:04, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi --- thanks for the notice. I was not aware of the 60 article rule. I used a previously created template for Centre Co., which apparently didn't have the proper structure to begin with! Sorry, but I guess I went into territory I wasn't familiar enough to be messin' with. Let me know what I can do to fix my grievous mistakes.--Pubdog (talk) 10:07, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No, they're made (almost) correctly, just missing a second category and as I said, I'm happy to leave them and see how it works out. I was just letting you know about the proposals page for future. *checks Centre* oh, right, it's missing from the NRHP category too. Fixed also. (The other thing I did was move the non-NRHP templates into the new categories). --Qetuth (talk) 10:22, 2 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Locust Point Historic District[edit]

I just noticed the new Locust Point Historic District in Baltimore and had the feeling that I'd already taken a pic of it. It seems like the photo of Christ United Church of Christ fits the bill, about 2 blocks from the center of the fairly big HD. I've got more photos of the general area in my files, if you know of anything special in the HD, but this was the only one I felt compelled to upload before the HD was declared. Of course I'm checking with you because you always find my mistakes - which I actually enjoy very much. Of course I enjoy it more when I don't make mistakes that you can find!

Thank you! Northern Panhandle is the only part of the state that's convenient for me (with rare exceptions), since I'm normally only there when going between metro Pittsburgh and southern Indiana, so I figured I'd do my best. NRHP infobox question[edit]

Just wanted to let you know that I cited you in a discussion here. Nothing wrong - it's just that your work on Arlington County (which is excellent, by the way - I live next door and I've done nowhere near the work you're doing today) has raised an issue or two with the infobox formatting that I think should be addressed.

Keep up the good work, and happy editing! --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:11, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Here's hoping. Although I notice that your article on Glebe Center uses the map, but doesn't have the same problem. Looks to be something to do with the coding of the "historic district" submarkers... --Ser Amantio di NicolaoChe dicono a Signa?Lo dicono a Signa. 21:21, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You are correct. There must be some mysterious coding that auto-populates a category for Historic district in XXX based on the map cited in the infobox. Thanks again for pursuing resolution.--Pubdog (talk) 21:41, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be near Somerset PA next week and hope to take a few minutes for photos in northern Garrett County; it won't be anything particularly new for our lists, but I'd like to have at least a few Maryland sites for my own collection. Talkback or reply at my talk page, please. Nyttend (talk) 02:29, 12 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry for the delay in responding. I'm afraid I am unaware where the nomination forms might be available online. The best I can find are the summaries available through the Maryland Historical Trust.--Pubdog (talk) 10:16, 26 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

However, this week I've found on its place newly constructed regular modern one-span bridge:( I guess this NRHP should be moved to defunct ones. Shuvaev (talk) 01:51, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Swibe! Quite an honor. Can you tell me what it means?--Pubdog (talk) 01:39, 14 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I know you always catch my mistakes, but these are legit![edit]

Pub,

User:Hshuvaeva nearly finished the Chester County NRHP lists, which motivated me to get the last 2. These deserve some explanation and might even be controversial.

Wilkinson House. New roof, new siding, removed rear "shed." So the cross-gable is gone, as well as the wooden "quoins". The foundations of the stable are in the right place though, as well as the bridge, railway, road and river.
Spruce Grove School, intentionally hidden by the owner behind "bridge out" and "detour" signs. He must have some pull with the local authorities. I entered via Hilltop View Road, the worst road in 10 counties. The owner was there with some workmen, who looked at me like I was crazy talking to him

I thought I better get my explanations made before you thought anything looked fishy!

All the best and thanks,

There seems to be an 80-100% overlap between the HD and the CDP. Actually, since CDPs don't have fixed borders (except for 1 census) there's no real way to tell if they are in anyway different. Smallbones(smalltalk) 21:15, 23 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

More than the usual difficulty[edit]

The real Kirk House

Check http://www.mht.maryland.gov/nr/NRDetail.aspx?HDID=690&COUNTY=Cecil&FROM=NRCountyList.aspx?COUNTY=Cecil and you'll see that this is the real Kirk house. Check my pic at Commons for more details. Earlier I had taken a pic of a Gothic Revival House near the site, and a WLMer just did the same a few days ago. This is about 3 blocks south of the Old Brick Meetinghouse, where I think you got the pic, so you might have run into this yourself. In any case, I think it is resolved now.

Rose Hill, also in Cecil County

No real complaint aboutRose Hill: sometimes you just can't get a pic! My question is: there is a pretty informative state historical sign on the other side of the driveway. It also makes the point loud and clear that the site is not open to the public. In Pennsylvania (due to Ruhrfisch's OTRS) and probably in Delaware (text is read into the State legislative minutes) photos of historical signs can be uploaded. Does it work similarly in MD? Smallbones(smalltalk) 19:53, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I'm afraid I don't know. Maryland Historical Trust would probably be the best source. I went ahead and added your pic!--Pubdog (talk) 20:00, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

File:Green Spring Valley Historic District Church Dec 09.JPG[edit]

Hi Pubdog - this photo is an error. It is in a historic valley, but it itself is not a historic place. It was a Methodist church which has now been -- and has been for years -- a private residence, whose owner is not bound by any laws regarding historical properties, since this is not one. Thus we are, at his request, removing photos of his home, which is private. Thanks very much. Joannafbb (talk) 00:21, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Joannafbb[reply]

OK, but you should be aware there are no restrictions on the taking and postings of images of properties, historic or not, that are legally taken from a public right of way.--Pubdog (talk) 09:37, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Good to know. The problem is, this image is on sites that are labeled Green Spring Valley as though this building is somehow iconic of the valley itself, when it is not at all -- it is not registered historically, while there are others there that are. The owner battles trespassers constantly, because of this photo, and most trespassers cite Wikipedia as their source of information. If there is a way to remove this photo from Wikipedia as well as Wikimedia commons, it would be hugely appreciated. I have tried to do it myself and failed. Can you help?Joannafbb (talk) 12:01, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, since the train station is the structure listed in one of the descriptions, maybe that would be an more appropriate image to use? Are you able to swap it out, on the Wikimedia COmmons as well? See link for train station photo: http://www.loopnet.com/Listing/14393513/1925-Old-Valley-Road-Stevenson-MD Joannafbb (talk) 16:04, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Pubdog asked me for advise on an aspect of this, but I'll address the general situation and User:Joannafbb directly. We should assume that you are making this request in good faith and that there is a problem that we can help solve, but I have to say that your concerns seem overblown from my viewpoint. Pubdog has broken no laws or ethical rules and there is a public interest in seeing photos of historical sites. I live near 2 NRHP sites and haven't seen any problems with trespassers or a gawking public near them. He has given the photo to the public domain and he can't pull that back - once the public owns a photo, it owns it forever. Some folks at Commons might object to him trying to pull it back by removing the photo, but there is a rule where he can request a "courtesy deletion" in appropriate circumstances (Pub - contact James W).
There are certainly things that we can do though. Removing the photo from the article and list, as you have done, should eliminate 95% of the problem. That's where people would see the pic, not at Commons. At Commons I have "buried" the photo, by taking off the NRHP template and coords and removing all but one category "Churches in Maryland." Nobody will just run into this photo by accident, they would have to know what they are looking for. 99% of the problem solved.
There is something that the homeowner can do - get us a replacement photo. Then if crowds of gawkers do form, they'll form around someplace else more appropriate. The train station is a good idea, but we can't just upload anything off the web. The homeowner could upload that photo, if he or she took the photo themselves, or any other photo of the historic district that they took themselves.
Could you try to get the homeowner to upload some photos of the historic district? I'll suggest the following sites: the train station or any old building in Stevenson. The Stevenson University campus (in Stevenson). A historically African-American community called Charrolanee, east of 129 and south of 130 (See Map), or any appropriate historical site in the district that the homeowner knows about. Could he or she do that? It would definitely help and everybody would then be happy.
All the best,
Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:54, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Smallbones, and Pubdog, I cannot thank you enough for your help. Smallbones, please know THIS IS NOT A HISTORICAL SITE. Caps are for emphasis only -- I am not yelling. That fact, and the constant trespassing, is the crux of the issue. We will absolutely get you a replacement photo -- brilliant idea.71.179.167.69 (talk) 17:11, 3 October 2013 (UTC)Joannafbb (talk) 18:20, 3 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NRHP coordinates[edit]

Is there a policy on changing an incorrect lat/lon for an NRHP entry? I had to do a little casting about for one recently, and peering at the original topo in the nomination form. Can I change the country list and the target article? Add something to an action list somewhere? Just change the camera position in the picture? The item in question is Brown-Moore Blacksmith Shop, listed .61 mi west of where it really is. Not that far off as these thing go, I've been at others that are worse. Thanks. Generic1139 (talk) 19:57, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Whitewood High School[edit]

Are you sure that Whitewood High School has actually been removed from the National Register? I can't find anything in the NPS listings that says it's been removed, and the NPS has a tendency to leave demolished buildings on the NR for a while after their demolition. Hi Pubdog. Isaac Perry is on my watchlist and an anonymous editor added the Walton Armory. I looked into it and the website concurred with the information added and the date in the Walton Armory/ Grange article, but the addresses were different. I was a little confused. June 2014 NYSHPB meeting[edit]

See nominations here. The good news: No large industrial buildings in Buffalo this time. The bad news: Lots elsewhere in WNY, including ...

... listing pretty much the entire New York State Barge Canal as a historic district. I won't point you to any specific locations; you can go to the meeting page and look over the 14 separate PDFs if you want ideas.

Beyond that, we have:

  • First Presbyterian Church of LeRoy, 7 Clay Street (which looks like it's right on the corner with Route 5). Also includes its nearby brick manse, and I'd get some pics of the interior if you can.
  • High & Locust Streets Historic District, Lockport. Not strictly those streets, and not all of those two streets either: 143-399 High St, 119-224 Locust Street, 23-54 Park Place & 23-43 Spalding St. But the houses look nice though.
  • Jamestown Downtown Historic District. Ready for this alphabet soup? 23-38 & 20-408 N. Main St.; 200-322 Washington St.; 201-326 Cherry St.; 207-317 Pine St.; 215-417 Spring St.; 8-21 & 100-200 E 4th St; 2-23 & 100-121 W 3rd St.; 2 to 24 & 100 to 122 E 3rd St.; 10-14 W 2nd St.; 1-24 & 100-302 E 2nd St.; 101-205 E 1st St.; 321 Prendergast. It'll be easier to draw the map (see back pages of application) than to write all that out. Actually, when I visited Jamestown for the first time last year, I was surprised there wasn't a downtown historic district. Little did I know ...
  • Oakwood Cemetery, 763 Portage Road, Niagara Falls. When created, the article title will have to have a disambiguation term in parentheses—in NY alone we've got Oakwood Cemeteries in Syracuse and Troy at least. Apparently an important part of this is the section devoted to the graves of people who went over the falls in a barrel, whether they survived or not.
  • Public School 60, more recently known as Riverside Academy, 238 Ontario St., Buffalo. OK, that's your one nom in Buffalo.

Have fun! Should be easier to take good pictures now that it's getting green again ... Daniel Case (talk) 17:25, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright issues[edit]

I noticed that in two of your recent NRHP articles, W. Q. M. Berly House and Ballentine-Shealy House, the text of the article is almost entirely copied from the description sections of the respective nominations. Since you've been an established NRHP editor for some time now, what's going on here? NRHP nominations generally aren't in the public domain and are still copyrighted by the author, so copying of that sort is a violation of Wikipedia's copyright policy. Midfield Plantation[edit]

Hi! This is just to let you know that after not seeing any response from you to Moonriddengirl's comments at Talk:Midfield Plantation, I've gone ahead and blanked the article and listed it at WP:CP for processing. This clumsily written note replaces the invasive template that normally gets left in such cases. I'm aware that you are a productive and valued editor, but in view of the surprising number of occurrences of the word "copyright" on this page, and in particular of the comments immediately above this, I believe that it may be time for you to review your understanding of copyright matters and our policies on them. A NRHP in Wittman? Who'da thunk?[edit]

I was "born & raised" in Wittman, living there from 1962 to mid-1980. My father's family owned the huge Tarbutton farm on Pot Pie Rd. I suspect Sewell Point Road was named after my family. My mother's family, the Howeth clan, owned & operated a hardware store on Rt. 33 for years; I'm told, though, that it has been closed down by the people to whom my grandfather sold it. Howeth Rd. is where they lived for ages.

What's the next state[edit]

Saw your SC note at WT:NRHP. Have you decided where to go next? Among states east of the Mississippi, Kentucky's one of the worst states as far as article percentage, most of its current articles are NRIS-only stubs, and pretty much everything non-archaeological (even new listings) is online, either through Focus or the Kentucky Heritage Council. Your articles are also guaranteed to have plenty of images; a slight majority is illustrated, and once I finish the not-yet-started uploads from my most recent trip, every county but one will have at least one photo. Noble School[edit]

Yes, destruction does make it hard to find :-) However, I knew that it was gone before I visited; I've had enough incidents of photographing the wrong spot (I did it on this trip, photographing the building next door to the Colonial Theatre in Harrisburg) that I will generally download the nomination and check it with Google Satellite before going. Part of the issue is that it's in Juniata, historically a separate community — as a result, it's got its own street system, so 209 12th Avenue, Juniata is more than a mile away from where 209 12th Avenue non-Juniata would be, if it existed (it doesn't; the location would be in the rail yards), and I wouldn't have known that if I hadn't looked beforehand. stub tagts for NRHPs[edit]

Please note that several US states now have separate county NRHP stub tags - generally with names like {{FranklinCountyNC-NRHP-stub}} - where the first component is first the name of the county (one word, in CamelCase - e.g "NewHanover"), followed by the word "County" and then the standard 2-letter state abbreviation (the ANSI column in List of U.S. state abbreviations#Table). עוד מישהו Od Mishehu 19:47, 22 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

December 2014 WNY NRHP noms[edit]

Only one on this quarter's list that's actually in the Buffalo area: Broadway Historic District, not in the city but basically all of Route 20 through the village of Lancaster. Probably difficult to get in there at the moment, but you should certainly be able to eventually.

Further out, however, there's a bunch:

  • Boxwood Cemetery, North Gravel Road, Medina. I think this makes the fourth cemetery for Orleans County. In terms of proportion, that's got to be a record.
  • Cuba Cemetery, Medbury Avenue opposite Union Street, Cuba (duh). Yet another boneyard ... at least this one isn't too far from I-86.
  • James H. Bolton House, 117 West Washington St., Bath. A modest Victorian house that shouldn't be too far off the road when coming back to Buffalo from the DC area.

I have left that "Elmwood" in Livingston County off because the link comes back as an error. Daniel Case (talk) 18:57, 23 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

June 2015[edit]

They apparently had the meeting a week ago.

There are two noms in Buffalo that should be easy to get:

Elsewhere in WNY, we have:

  • Barna C. Roup House, 38 Borden Ave., Perry. Intact 1898 Queen Anne, an early work of J. MIlls Platt, who did a lot of major buildings in Rochester. It's been a while since we had a new listing from Wyoming County, I think.
  • East Hill Historic District, 98–367 East Main Street, Springville. Basically the village's old residential area.
  • Holley Village Historic District. See the nom form for addresses. Basically the usual upstate NY village HD. Yet another addition to that Orleans list I thought I'd finished. Once upon a time. Daniel Case (talk) 04:14, 19 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

September 2015[edit]

At last week's meeting, there were a number of new noms from Buffalo, But first, one in Niagara Falls:

  • Mount St. Mary's Hospital, 515 Sixth Street, Niagara Falls. Large presently-vacant brick building linked to early charitable efforts of Catholic Church in the area, good representative of early 20th-century hospital construction.
  • Parkside Candy Shoppe and Factory, 3208 Main Street, Buffalo. 'Bout time for this Buffalo institution, says my wife, who lived nearby when she was a child. I didn't realize they're still going at it ... preserving early 20th-century candy manufacturing and retailing practices. I wonder if this might make it to NHL status one day.
  • Sinclair Rooney and Company Building, 465 Washington Ave. Also known as the Remington-Rand and Rand-Sperry Building at various times. Well-preserved early 20th-century light-industrial office and factory building that proved adaptable to use by a different company making a different product. Looks like you couldn't miss it.
  • The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company Warehouse, 545 Swan Street (or 519 Hamburg Street). Representative example of a "daylight factory" from the early 20th century. Again, looks another large industrial buidling that should be easy to find.
  • University Presbyterian Church, 3330 Main St., Buffalo. Not too far from Parkside Candies, actually, at the intersection with Niagara Falls Boulevard. Nominated for the unusual trapezoidal shape of the building along the corner (you might want to photograph it in a way that captures that) and its early outreach to the growing suburbs.

December 2015[edit]

Over Thanksgiving, they put up the next batch of noms for Thursday's meeting. Only two in Buffalo, but they're both large historic neighborhoods:

  • Elmwood Historic District (East). Almost everything between Elmwood and Delaware between about Summer Avenue to the park, excepting the west side of Delaware from Canisius High School on south. When they got Elmwood West listed, they didn't think they could ever do this—at 2,249 contributing properties on 422 acres (171 ha), this may well be the second-largest urban historic district in the state if it gets listed (In fact, in terms of the number of total CPs, it will beat out the East End Historic District in Newburgh, near me, although that district is still larger in area. The photographic possibilities are limitless ...

I should also add that this district intersects with my life somewhat: Nardin Academy, my wife's alma mater, is a CP, and so is the house at 1598 Delaware, where I lived for about six months of 1992. A 563-page nomination, though ... wow!

  • Fargo Estate Historic District. Largely the area west of Allentown—just go look at the maps in the nomination (around page 94 or so).

There's nothing else, really, in Western New York this time around. Daniel Case (talk) 05:34, 1 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

A barnstar for you![edit]

The Original Barnstar
Really appreciate your recognition of the Philip Rogers House in Warwick Township, Chester County, PA. However -- the house shown in the photograph is NOT the Rogers house but a much later one located at the eastern corner of Victoria Chase (a new development road) and Route 23. Penn Wick is actually the next property to the east along Rt 23. I live in the vicinity of St. Peters and knew the people who owned "Penn Wyck", as they called it, in the late Sixties. Ausilk (talk) 05:01, 19 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the Barnstar. I created the stub article, but did not take the picture. That is talk. You should remove it and add your comment on the Talk page--Pubdog (talk) 20:42, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

About Bostian Heights, NC[edit]

Hi Pubdog,
From what I can see, this appears to me an informal name for a locality in China Grove, North Carolina. I've searched the usual US government websites for this. Both the NC and Federal websites tell me things along the lines of "Sorry, no results found for 'Bostian Heights'". I have created it as a re-direct, but that may well also be incorrect.
Your thoughts about this? Peter in Australia aka --Shirt58 (talk) 10:44, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page stalker) According to the USGS Geographic Names Information System, which is generally the authority on these matters, Bostian Heights is a separate community. I went ahead and started an article on it. TheCatalyst31 ReactionCreation 12:29, 7 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Indiana[edit]

Thanks for starting on Indiana! I've left some comments at WT:NRHP. In addition to those, let me ask: could you start citing page numbers? It's easier for everyone if you specify the page number where you got the information; for example, before fixing this typo, I looked through the nomination to find what it said (I wouldn't want to "fix" it if M/E/Hutton had been correct), and it would have been a bit easier if you'd specified page 7 for that part of the article. You don't need to create a separate citation for every page; you can just append the {{rp}} template to a citation, as I've done when citing the nomination (citation #3) in Illinois Central Railroad Freight Depot (Bloomington, Indiana). Nyttend (talk) 00:38, 13 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for using the template! Nyttend (talk) 14:33, 19 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry for bugging you again, but could you leave your alphabetical order and create the Perry County sites? The new article on community post offices references the Jacob Rickenbaugh House, and the county's other sites are all particularly significant because it's one of the earliest settled regions of the state. Nyttend (talk) 16:53, 25 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea; sorry. I've really not done anything with SHAARD in a good while; because I downloaded all NR forms a couple of years ago or more, I don't really have any reason to use SHAARD. If you send me an email, I can reply with forms attached; just tell me which ones you want (or I'll send whatever I feel like sending), and be sure to leave me a {{ygm}} note, because I'll often go a couple of days without checking the WP email address. Nyttend (talk) 20:08, 22 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ugg...I wish I'd discovered this myself before I moved away from Bloomington; it's only about an hour away from Washington, and I went down there several times after getting this and several other NR pictures in the city. Back in April 2011, when I got this photo, SHAARD didn't yet have photos or nominations for most sites; it's not as if I could easily check up on locations or descriptions as I could later in my time in Indiana. Just hoping you don't discover the same problem with other sites! Nyttend (talk) 19:37, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
First one so far, so don't sweat it. Cheers and Happy Labor Day!--Pubdog (talk) 19:39, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, good to know. Any interest in having me email forms? Nyttend (talk) 19:44, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, but I'm OK with SHAARD now. When it's down, it gives me a break.--Pubdog (talk) 19:50, 5 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Seven months late, but the problem's finally resolved. I was in Evansville a week ago, and on my return trip, I stopped in Washington and rephotographed the house. I moved the original image to File:Bedford Road 1210, Washington.jpg and uploaded a new image under the original title, File:Thomas Faith House.jpg, so the Thomas Faith House article is finally properly illustrated. Template for PA NRHP sites[edit]

Please see Dr. Knisley Covered Bridge. The template is {{NRHP-PA}} and it seems to work with photos too. Smallbones(smalltalk) 16:25, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You seem to have an interest in historic buildings in Salisbury, North Carolina. I decided this house appears notable enough for its own article, though its historic district, West Square Historic District, doesn't have an article or an NRHP designation. I was hoping you could take a look at the article and comment on Talk:Sidney Blackmer about removing the content from Sidney Blackmer.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:02, 7 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the notice User:Vchimpanzee. Article looks good. Is the West Square Historic District perhaps a locally designated historic district. It doesn't seem to be on the NRHP at this point.--Pubdog (talk) 14:51, 7 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
As strange as this sounds, I walked past the sign Tuesday and it said the district had been on the NRHP since 1975. I was at the library most of that day and I asked in the history room and was told the district isn't on the "official" list because they're (I don't remember who "they" were) slow to get things done. But a district on the NRHP since 1975? That makes no sense.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 18:46, 7 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

NRHP articles on Philly schools[edit]

Thank you so much for starting the articles on Philadelphia historic school buildings! I've expanded several of them by adding more info focusing on the whole school and not only the building. Of course the architecture gives the notability and there should be info on that, but also having stuff on the catchment area (what neighborhoods are zoned to the school), the school's history and culture, the student body, etc. is important too. Hopefully such articles encourage students to become Wikipedians themselves once they reach high school age! WhisperToMe (talk) 18:49, 28 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Smallbones: I found a roadblock. According to this story George Washington School the institution was closed, but Abigail Vare School then moved into the old Washington, while the old Vare was closed. Now the school is called "Vare-Washington". I'm thinking of renaming "Abigail Vare School" to "Vare Washington School", and then describing both NRHP buildings (old and new) in that article. Then the article on the old George Washington only described its former NRHP building. What do you think? WhisperToMe (talk) 01:23, 29 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No, thank you. Many great memories. The Art was a vital part of life for at least 4 generations. My mom and her sisters were there when Pearl Harbor was attacked. Mr Percseky, the owner (still was when I was a kid) has the protectionist shut down the movie and raise the houselights. The theater had a stage, he walked out from the wings and said, "the Japanese have attacked us. Go home now to your family" it was early afternoon on a Sunday. The girls went home and their fellas went a cross the street to the post office and waited all night in the cold for them to open in the morning so they could enlist in the service. Sunday growing up for me was going to the Methodist church (also in the district) then to the Art for the Sunday double feature. My cousins and I would take turns shorting our offering so we could buy some candy as the show. Thanks for a trip down memory lane. This is why we Wikipedia! June 2016 NRHP noms[edit]

Sorry to be late getting this to you, but with Wikimania and all I've been rather busy these past few weeks.

Anyway, the last meeting had a lot of Buffalo-based noms (and some from the 'burbs). Wow! They're keeping busy.

  • The Rae Flats and the Raleigh, 346 and 354 Franklin Streets. Intact early 20th-century apartment buildings; the Raleigh started out as a Jewish club
  • Ascension Roman Catholic Church Complex, 168 and 172 Robinson Street; 61, 69 and 91 Kell Street, North Tonawanda. First Catholic church built in that city; social center for immigrants. Note that there's a few buildings in this one, hence the "complex" in the listing title (that we will drop when we create the article, I guess, unless some of the buildings are no longer church property).
  • Buffalo Public School #63, 91 Lisbon Avenue. Excellent example of standardized early-20th century school design, not currently in use.
  • Depew High School, now Terrace Heights Elementary School, 591 Terrace Boulevard, Depew. Another early standardized school building, now vacant as well.
  • Prospect Hill Historic District, Busti Avenue, Columbus Parkway, Columbus Park West, Niagara Street, Rhode Island Avenue, Vermont Street. Planned neighborhood in the city popular with second-generation Italian immigrants moving away from the old neighborhoods on the East Side. Check the map at the end of the nomination for where specifically the contributing properties are.
  • St. Theresa's Roman Catholic Church Complex, 1970 Seneca Street, 17 Mineral Springs Road. Buildings in different styles reflecting different eras of development in late 19th and early 20th centuries; center of South Buffalo's Irish American community (so I wonder if Jimmy Griffin ever took Communion there).
  • The Colonial Flats and Annex, 399–401 Delaware Avenue. Another early 20th-century apartment building reflecting three different phases of construction.
  • The Karnak Flats, 87 Whitney Place. Late 19th-century apartment building, one of the first built in a residential neighborhood in the city. Do I detect a trend here?

OK. Do what you can. Daniel Case (talk) 02:07, 16 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, also, out in Wyoming County there's this one:

September 2016[edit]

Just two, both in the city of Buffalo, in the latest batch:

  • F.N. Burt Company factory, 1502 Niagara Street. actory for company whose Seneca Street headquarters was already listed in 2013. Apparently was very modern and a good place to work in its day.
  • Former Public School #24, 775 Best Street. Apparently one of the city's first schools to offer special-ed, in the form of classes for the blind. Daniel Case (talk) 04:51, 17 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Pubdog for all your hard work on Indiana NRHP articles. You efforts brought some great memories to visit and greatly improved this great encyclopedia. Thanks. John from Idegon (talk) 22:27, 3 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hear, hear. Your completing out articles on NRHP-listed places in Indiana is really great. By the way, I looked through a list of articles started by me in Indiana, and I see one remaining that is NRIS-only: North Jefferson Street Historic District. While your Indiana-sourcing skills are still hot, is there any chance you could expand that too? Or perhaps the Indiana NRHPs source is not available for that one? Any which way, thanks for doing so much. Always a fan. :) --doncram 05:07, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, I like your linking of architectural terms like voussoirs in the Indiana articles I've reviewed. Your First Presbyterian Church (South Bend, Indiana) informed me that Palladian window is a bluelink, which I can use over here. Thanks! --doncram 05:26, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Maryland map reverts[edit]

I'm curious as to why you reverted my edits to Bostwick (Bladensburg, Maryland), Hilltop Manor (Bladensburg, Maryland), & Mount Rainier Historic District. All of these places are in Maryland, not DC, so the infobox maps should show their place within Maryland. More importantly, the alt text on the map states "...is located in District of Columbia" which is flat-out wrong (grammatically and literally). —D Monack (talk) 20:35, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • I reverted since the locations are close enough to DC to show their actual locations vs a general MD map. I'll take care of reverting my revert. Don't care that much to get into it. Just trying to be helpful for those who may be interested in how close they are to DC.--Pubdog (talk) 21:19, 27 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Missouri NRHP photos, and RI-TX-VA documents[edit]

I dunno what you might think: is it worthwhile to note the photos that are included within the Missouri NRHP nomination or registration documents? This would make them more consistent with the usual NRHP references where the NPS has the document and has the photos in a separate document, like this one:[1]

References

  1. ^ Jacob E. Thomas (May 12, 1975). "National Register of Historic Places Inventory - Nomination: Grant County Courthouse" (PDF). National Park Service. Retrieved 2015-11-20. with two photos from 1975

It happens that I am given notice of most of your new articles because they link to a page or two that i created, and i revised one of your new articles to note the reference includes photos in comparable way. --doncram 22:11, 20 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Happy 2017! I see in this example that you have chosen to do that, thanks.
Also thank you for posting your info about RI, TX, VA nomination documents being available. I added that statement to the wp:NRHPhelp sections for those states. But, could you possibly please advise a little bit further, about how exactly to get the interface to work? For example, suppose I try to get the NRHP document for Winters-Wimberley House in Texas. I click on this Texas link that you provided, then what, exactly? There are several possibilities:
  • 1. Search somehow here for what is the REFNUM of the property. Presumably that is by searching within the "finding aid" document which I presume is a list of all the Texas NRHPs covered, together with their REFNUMS. I expected to get the REFNUM, then type that into some search box. Am I missing something?
  • Okay more specifically, find the "Texas Single Property Listings Finding Aid" document and click on that. It brings up a viewer window, which unlike my experience just below, for some reason does eventually work and show a document. In the viewer window-specific search (click on the magnifying glass icon within the viewer window) enter "wimberley" and step through occurences until i get to the Winters-Wemberley House, confirming that it should be covered and providing me the REFNUM "02000527". Then what? I try typing "02000527" into the main search box at upper left, and then hit the "search" icon....and yay it brings up two hits, the desired NRHP nomination document and the same "Texas Single Property Listings Finding Aid". Clicking on the NRHP nomination document brings up a new empty viewer screen.... is this what you meant?
  • 2. Search on a possibly unique word in the name of the NRHP...Enter "wimberley" into the searchbox at upper left, then hit the adjacent search icon (showing a magnifying glass). This is not what you suggested, but perhaps works at least in this case... the NRHP document shows up second after an unrelated "Wimberley" item. Select that. At the resulting page, there is a window that looks like it should be a viewer showing the NRHP document, but it is empty. Wait for it....no, it doesn't show up. Okay instead, at the resulting page, select the red PDF icon ... no, that does nothing. At the resulting page, just below the useless viewer window, find the "download" button which has a down-arrow in its icon, and select that. Oh okay, in my Chrome browser I see a slow download going on for a PDF document "02000527.pdf" ...it gives no indication of the size of document or percentage progress, but i see the downloaded size climbing 45MB...52MB...okay it stops. Click on that downloaded file, select "open" and it opens a new Chrome browser page with the 42 page document in small size. The URL is "file:///C:/Users/doncram/Downloads/02000527.pdf" which is not usable as a URL in Wikipedia. This can be saved to my computer if I select the similar "download" button at upper right (same icon with a down-arrow), which brings up a "save as..." dialog box. About this:
  • Is this pretty much what you do? Can you confirm that while the REFNUM is used in the filename, I don't need to use it in any way like typing it in. If not exactly what you do, then what?
  • Have you found that this works better in a different browser, or have any other tips?
  • Can you confirm that this system does not provide a linkable URL for the file?
This sounds very petty as I write it, but i do think exact instructions are what's needed for communicating properly in a help document. It would be great if you clarify about the details either by replying here, or perhaps by your directly editing at wp:NRHPhelp#Texas. Thanks, and happy new year. cheers, --doncram 23:21, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. On one of my screens I notice, much later, that the desired NRHP nomination document does appear in the viewer box which I thought was useless. But not in another screen where it should also appear. What, do I need to set a timer and wait 15 minutes? Or is there something i did randomly that brings it up sometimes and sometimes not. Argh. --doncram 23:48, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

March 2017 NRHP applications[edit]

The meeting is in two days. There are only two nominations from Buffalo under consideration:

  • Public School #77, 429 Plymouth Avenue. Built in late 1920s to handle expanding immigrant neighborhood of Prospect Hill North.
  • The Virginia, 250 Virginia Street. Late 19th-century apartment building designed for the city's growing middle class.

These are also the only two from WNY. Daniel Case (talk) 06:09, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

June noms[edit]

Hey! The Virginia actually got listed before you were able to take a picture of it. That's a first (I'm not blaming you ... perhaps you haven't been back up there in a while?)

Anyway, last week's meeting produced only two new nominations in Buffalo:

  • Linde Air Products Factory, 155 Chandler Street. Part of the Black Rock MRA, this latest aspect of Buffalo's industrial heritage proposed for the Register was the first American oxygen-extraction plant when built in 1907.

Down in the southern part of the county, the Springville Center for the Arts (listed as the Baptist Church of Springville) is also getting expanded to include the parsonage and garage.

If you swing through Batavia, you should also be able to get the Newberry Building at 109–111 Main Street, a brick two-story retail building.

Hope you get the chance to take these at some point ... Daniel Case (talk) 18:38, 23 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • Thanks Daniel Case. I'll be in Buffalo next week, so I should be able to get to these. I haven't been back up since last November. Cheers--Pubdog (talk) 23:57, 11 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I looked back in the history of the page and it seems you originally created this page. Thanks for doing that. I'm a bit bias here, but my ancestor, Louis Franci (was legally called Anglo LanFranchi while construction was going on), was one of the construction managers on the hotel expansion that created the Ship Hotel. As such, I added a whole section and more to the page, citing verifiable sources of course.

I sadly never visited it before it was burned down in 2001, but I've visited the site before. Thanks to the Wikipedia page, now people can look up "Grand View Point Hotel" on Google Maps and get the location where it was! Its amazing. Thanks again. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Historyday01 (talkcontribs) 01:50, 7 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The meeting is today. There are only two noms from Buffalo, both large industrial facilities, one of which is visually familiar to just about everybody.

  • Buffalo General Electric Company Complex, 960-996 Busti Avenue; 990 Niagara Street. This is that big old brick building that sits above the Niagara Thruway just north of Peace Bridge, where the wires come in across the river from Canada (which is, in fact, why it was built: to receive all that juice being generated up near the Falls before the Power Project). The application shows a lot of angles; I bet the neatest one you could get would be from walking out to the middle of the bridge or so and shooting from there, if that's something you'd do. Or even from the Fort Erie side (It would be sort of neat to have what might be the only NRHP listing photographed from outside the US!), in late-day light with a zoom lens.
  • New York Central Black Rock Freight House, 68–120 Tonawanda Street, just north of the west end of the Scajaquada and, it seems, easily accessible from that exit. This is apparently the last remaining rail freight house in the city; it's (as the addressing suggests) a really long building that you're probably going to want to photograph from one end (Try the south end so as to keep the sun behind you).

And then up in Niagara Falls we have one:

This all seems like it should be easy to shoot. Looking forward to seeing them whenever you get the chance! Daniel Case (talk) 16:43, 16 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

June 2018[edit]

Five from Buffalo, and one elsewhere in Erie County, in Thursday's batch:

  • Buffalo Public School #57, 243 Sears Street. Neoclassical 1914 school built as an expansion to, and modernization of, an older school on the same location.
  • Public School #44, 1369 Broadway. Built in late 1900s and expanded in 1930s.
  • Colored Musicians' Club, 145 Broadway. Two-story brick commercial building that is apparently home to one of the oldest continuously operating African-American musicians' clubs in the country (also a union local hall).
  • Faith Missionary Baptist Church, 626 Humboldt Parkway. Mid-1920s synagogue that later became a black church as the neighboorhood's demographics changed.
  • Fiddler's Green Historic District, 65-85 Franklin Street, 23–37 North Buffalo Street, Springville. I gotta love that name. The buildings around the early core of the village. Seems really photogenic.
  • St. Stephen's Roman Catholic Church Complex, 169–193 Elk St. Intact 1882 Late Victorian Gothic church and school.

Looking forward to seeing the pics whenever you get the chance ... Daniel Case (talk) 05:53, 11 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

September 2018[edit]

Not much up in WNY from this quarter's meeting:

In Buffalo:

  • Chandler Street Industrial Buildings, 27–63 Chandler Street. Actually, name notwithstanding, a small historic district consisting of the three buildings at that address built along the Belt Line (about which we also really should have an article).

In the region:

  • Bewley Building, 4 Market Street, Lockport. Italian Renaissance revival building that has been a major part of the city's commercial core since 1928.

Looking forward to seeing any photos you may be able to take. Daniel Case (talk) 03:59, 21 June 2019 (UTC)[reply]

2019 US Banknote Contest[edit]

US Banknote Contest
November-December 2019

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons.

In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate.

If you do not want to receive invitations to future US Banknote Contests, follow the instructions here

Invite to Revive WikiProject:Shopping Centers![edit]

Hey there, Pubdog! I'm Windyshadow32, a new member of the sadly inactive Wikiproject Shopping Centers. I am trying to revive this project to highlight the unique stories of malls across the country and the world especially as we lose more and more of them. Undoubtedly, we will lose shopping malls due to the challenges we face at this moment. Your account was listed as involved in the project, and I would like to know if you would like to help revive it! I can't take on this massive project without you! I could really use assistance in assessing articles and placing them into proper categories. Please let me know if you'd be willing to help; I really appreciate it!

This place consists of a single residential street with less than 20 houses on it. There is nothing notable about it and it will be challenging to find any encyclopedic content to write about it. This street is no more deserving of coverage than any other residential street in Maryland, of which there must be tens of thousands.

Hi! I happened to see this page (came there from here), and noticed that a good deal of the description has been copied with minimal changes from the NRHP form. If that content is in the public domain (and I'm not sure that it is, see the Copyright issues section above, between the two sections titled Midfield Plantation), then you are expected to provide attribution; that's easily done with {{PD-notice}} – could you kindly do that for this and all other articles where you have incorporated PD content? If it's not PD then the copied content needs to be removed, and can then be rewritten in your own words. In general, if the copyright status is not clear, it's best to err on the side of caution. River Arts District[edit]

I created this article about a section of Asheville, North Carolina without knowing about your article Riverside Industrial Historic District. Had I known, I might have been able to expand your article with an alternate name for the district. I don't think River Arts District and Riverside Industrial Historic District refer to the same thing. I want to find a way to link the two articles together, maybe by saying one is part of the other in both articles. My article was based primarily on Wilma Dykeman RiverWay Plan, which had a lot of irrelevant information that could be used in the other article.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 19:59, 23 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Nolands Ferry I Archeological Site-I've added info on the ferry history[edit]

I've added information about the history of the ferry that Washington/Jefferson used and wrote about. Is there a way that the title "Nolands Ferry I Archeological Site" can be changed a bit to widen it? How about "Nolands Ferry & Archeological Site"? I have proposed a separate "Noland's Ferry" but that didn't fly. Thanks in advance. Tom Tlc356 (talk) 21:21, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Notice

The article Brighton, Erie County, New York has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No indication of notability separate from the town in which it lies. The entire article is one sentence, and practically the same as the one-line mention of it in Tonawanda (town), New York#Communities and locations in the Town of Tonawanda

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. estar8806 (talk) 22:10, 31 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
