NP/recent changes patrol while in a WikiEd course[edit]

Hi Ian! I'm a student in one of the WikiEd courses. I'm pretty sure I'm the only already established user in the class, so nothing in the guided tours was particularly new to me, but it was nice for a refresher! I've been a contributor in some form or another since at least 2006, and one of the primary things I like to do is patrol new pages and recent changes for vandalism. However, when looking through the WikiEd site, I noted that it logs ALL edits made by student users, even talk page edits. Presumably, reversion of vandalism, tagging new pages, etc. would all show up in that list, when those activities wouldn't be related to the course. Should I avoid doing these things until the course is over, or is there some way around this issue? Now that I'm back on Wikipedia, I'd like to contribute to new page and recent changes patrol again if it isn't inconvenient. --[Belinrahs|talktomeididit] 05:47, 28 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Belinrahs. It's great to have an established editor in a class. And no, you shouldn't worry about that - though you may want to let your instructor know, in case they're confused by your edits. On the contrary, if the class gets you back in the swing of editing, that's a big win. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 14:28, 29 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ian, thanks for the quick reply. I'm glad this isn't an issue - I know that patrolling new pages and for vandalism isn't the most constructive thing that can be done on Wikipedia, but I enjoy doing it. I will definitely let my instructor know -- he probably would be a bit confused if he suddenly saw that I had made hundreds of namespace edits in a short span of time! Help with Class[edit]

Hi, Ian,

The first wave of 35 students went through the first assignment, which was to (a) make an account, and (b) complete the WikiEd training (7/7 modules).

3 students are MIA entirely. I have emailed them, and I will see them tomorrow

2 did Wikipedia Adventure instead of the WikiEd training (my bad -- I included both links and said that Wiki Adventure was optional).

What I need help with is that several made an account, linked it to the course, and only got credit for a couple of the modules. I am trying to drill down and see what the activity was on their account, but I am betting that you could diagnose what is going on much faster. Here are the affected accounts:

Aeliles Kculli Rpdesai2 Sabrinag04 Rmathiso Rachelpeltzer Jwhitfield7 Mwittmer!

If you only look at one, please look at the last one -- she's been particularly conscientious.

There are a couple others that I think linked the account to the class, but didn't start either training.

Thanks, and much appreciated! Prof. Eric A. Youngstrom (talk) 18:52, 7 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Clemson class[edit]

Curious if you'd had any contact with the professor/class listed at Talk:Intercellular_cleft. Given the format, I strongly suspected it was a class project. I was so so so happy to see the talk page comment identifying the professor and university and professor's user name. Is that done for all Wiki Ed-supported classes? I think it definitely should be. It appears the class needs to be taught how to cite things on Wikipedia. Also, the manual of style with subject headings, etc. (they are capitalized and repeat the title of the article). Would you be the person to teach the professor how to edit Wikipedia so that they can teach the class more effectively? Thanks. Biosthmors (talk) pls notify me (i.e. {{U}}) while signing a reply, thx 19:44, 19 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks so much for the heads up, @Biosthmors:. It doesn't look like we've interacted with this person. I will let Jami know; hopefully she can get in touch with the professor. We've actually built pretty good training modules for students (and instructors) that usually work pretty well (but not perfectly - I regularly have to nudge students towards proper capitalization, and since I fix it when I find it, I probably have a very good sense of how often they use title case). The training modules also explain proper citation formats; most students seem to get it (though, again, some need a reminder).
For Wiki Ed supported classes, we have a template that goes onto every student's user page (students can, obviously, remove them, but most leave them). The system for tagging article talk pages is less foolproof, since it depends on students assigning themselves the articles they're working on. Wikipedia article selection[edit]

Hi Ian, I am prem sagar, a student editor. Me and my team are confused to choose the right Wikipedia article to edit for the final project. We have filtered so many articles and finally decided couple of them out of which we need to pick one. We all thought we would ask for your help in finalizing the article. Here are the two articles we are stuck between: Replication(computing) and collaborative decision-making software. Could you please suggest us the best topic which you think we can able to complete within the given time. Below are the links to the articles:

Thank you Ramya Priya (talk) 22:23, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Ramya Priya: Yes, you can always edit Wikipedia articles directly. It's good practice to interact with other editors, but pages aren't owned by the people who edit them, and anyone can edit. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 22:25, 21 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please look at CAGE page[edit]

Hi, Ian, Three quick things with the CAGE page:

(a) Please look at the revisions to the Reliability and Validity sections and see if we got the spirit of your suggestions right. If so, we are going to use this as a template for other assessment pages to help provide structure for the student editors.

(b) According the Dashboard tool, the page is about 48% on the structural completeness. What is the tool tracking? Any suggestions about how to get the completeness percentage higher?

(c) Any other suggestions for improving the page? We are thinking it is close to fleshed out, and if we are there, then we would like to move the students to a different page, and also point to this as an example. At some point we would like to get it evaluated on the importance scale and the quality scale. In terms of importance, my opinion would be "Mid" -- screening for alcohol problems is a major public health issue, and important in primary care as well as mental health. The CAGE is one of the best of the available screeners, and it has been evaluated in a substantial amount of research and consistently done well. The argument for not rating it even higher is that it is a relatively narrow topic and doesn't "contribute a depth of knowledge;" but it certainly is not trivial. In terms of quality, I am hoping that this is B class now (mostly complete without major problems -- though I am thrown by the low structural completeness rating from the Dashboard tool). Concretely, I would like to get input about what else would be helpful getting it up to GA.

Thanks, as always, for your help! Prof. Eric A. Youngstrom (talk) 16:23, 1 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Getting going[edit]

Thanks Ian for the ideas about adding to the Old Testament section of the article Christian Pacifism. Where do I jump in exactly? Do I start the section or just create a new paragraph at the end of it? Right now I am only adding 1-2 sentences with citation. Next I will be required to draft an addition to an article section...I think. Just dropping 1-2 sentences in seems odd and possibly will lack flow. What I found is in more detail and will be great for writing my draft when needed, but where do I put in just 1-2 sentences as required right now by my assignment?Tyler Chinappi (talk) 01:34, 12 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

A case of people running into an autoblock because one participant of a course in the same computer lab was blocked for sockpuppetry and edit-warring in 2013, but reactivated his old account before trying to create a new one. It didn't help that the class where I blocked (and unblocked, after the confusion was cleared up) two members as suspected sockpuppets wasn't registered with WikiEdu and was behaving like a bunch of cookie-cutter accounts trying to get autoconfirmed. Huon (talk) 00:13, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Aha. Now I understand what was going on better. Let's just all keep an eye on things. Thanks again, Huon. DrX (talk) 02:34, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to everyone for the quick response. And a heads up: I will have 75+ new Wikipedians active over the next two weeks, all from the same server. I obviously cannot keep them from doing so, but strongly suggest they stick to the sandbox and talk pages and vet any changes to live content through myself or other experienced Wikipedians that they have direct access to on-site. None of them will be registered with WikiEdu. I suppose we will handle this case by case. HullIntegritytalk / 07:57, 21 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Redundant welcomes?[edit]

Hi Ian. Up to now, I have been leaving a {{welcome student}} message on a user's talk page if I saw that they identified themselves as a student editor enroled in a course. However, I see you also leave messages as a representative of Wiki Ed. Should I perhaps stop leaving the templated welcome? It seems a bit redundant and potentially confusing. Thanks. --Drm310 (talk) 21:59, 23 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Drm310: It probably doesn't hurt to have more than one person welcome students to Wikipedia. I don't see any drawback in being greeted by more than one person. And thanks for welcoming them. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 03:12, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article Creation and Citation Questions[edit]

Hi Ian, could you glance at the sandbox on Afmccaffrey's page? Our group is working through a draft that will eventually be combined with the current stub article. We were able to access class catalogues (and other documents) from the school in Northwestern's archives, and were curious about proper citation. If there is anything else as well that you notice that should be altered, any advice is greatly appreciated! Woottie (talk) 02:00, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Three edits by students, all three with no seeming awareness of MEDRS or formatting citations... also pinging the instructor User:Kant66...

-- Jytdog (talk) 07:30, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, this is the instructor. Apologies for the confusion, I've pasted the email I sent to the students about this below. As you can see, I told them to stay away from statements about biological variables connected to other biological variables, and if they wanted to do something health-related stick to the social/health variable connection. That way, it becomes the kind of fact that is reported in a sociology journal, not a medical one. If I had them stick to facts reported in sociological journals, or dealt with social variables (for example, influence of income on obesity) would that fulfill MEDRS?

Thank you! Kant66 (talk) 13:52, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear class,

I forgot to mention that for Wikipedia, statements about biological influences health usually don't get past the editors unless they meet some stringent requirements. Basically, there are so many health/medical papers floating out there that the criterion for getting on Wikipedia is more stringent, statements have to be supported by a literature review or meta-analysis and not just a single study.

Anyway, the point is that if you want to do a health-related reference you should stick to something that's directly social related, for example the effect of income on obesity, instead of, say the effect of obesity on heart disease.

Best,

Dr. Cranney

Thanks Jytdog (talk · contribs). Kant66 (talk · contribs), thanks for sending out that note. While MEDRS probably wouldn't technically apply to social, rather than biomedical, influences on obesity (for example) I would still recommend that you ask your students to apply similar rigor. Look for the best sources available, focus on recent sources, and go with sources that review existing published reports and data instead of reporting new findings. While the latest research findings are often they most interesting, it can be difficult for students to distinguish something that's new and flashy (but ultimately not that solid) from something that's a solid, but incremental addition to the existing knowledge base.

And the other issue, of formatting references properly, is relevant no matter where they're working. Given how easy it is to format a reference from a DOI or PubMed ID with the VisualEditor, it's something students should always do. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:04, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Jytdog (talk) 17:03, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi Ian, I'm a student with WikiEd and am in Dr. Lenkowski's Neuro Seminar class. I've assigned myself the Serotonergic Cell Group article, but upon some further research and a look at the serotonin page itself, I think it would fit better under the Nervous System section within the main page. Q about banners for class assignments on talk pages[edit]

Hi Ian, I have a quick question for you. When my students signed up to edit existing pages, a banner was automatically created on the talk pages of those articles saying that the article was part of a class assignment and was being edited by a specific student. For the students who are now creating brand new pages, how do I get that banner to appear (linked to the appropriate student)? Thank you! Ninafundisha (talk) 13:11, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Sage (Wiki Ed): - if they assign themselves an as-yet uncreated article, will the banner be added once they move their sandbox to mainspace? Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 13:19, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ian (Wiki Ed), Ninafundisha: Every time you modify an assignment for the class on the dashboard, it triggers an update of each talk page. If a sandbox gets moved to mainspace, then the banner should get added the next time an assignment is added or removed on the dashboard. If there are no further changes to the assignments, then the dashboard will not add the banner.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:31, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Okay thanks, I'll modify the weekly assignments and hopefully that'll work. Ninafundisha (talk) 18:48, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ninafundisha: by 'assignments', I mean the assigned articles. Editing the timeline will not trigger a banner update. Instead, you can add and then remove an assigned article for one of the students.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:53, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sage (Wiki Ed) Thanks, that makes more sense. It worked! Ninafundisha (talk) 19:10, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Issue moving page from sandbox to wikipedia[edit]

Hi Ian,

My name is Danik, my group and I are working on the page for Margaret B. Fuller Boos I moved my sandbox page to the page created and switched the last name and first name to make sure it was in the right order according to wikipedia. When I try to post the page it says in big red letters "This sandbox is in the article namespace. Either move this page into your userspace, or remove the {{User sandbox}} template.". I have read the attachments to the claim however I still can't figure out how to post it. I am wondering what I can do to get it posted, when I go into my sandbox now it just has the link to the Margaret B. Fuller Boos page.

Thanks again,

Danik

Post-canine Megadontia Comparative Biology[edit]

Dear Ian,

Thank you for the comment regarding the possible redundancy in our Comparative Biology section of the Post-canine Megadontia page. As part of the team that were responsible for this section, I appreciate the amount of attention that you pay to our article and the willingness to help improve it. To address your concern, by comparing it to other primate species, we went beyond the Family Hominidae to include other Families of the Order Primate. Also the molar-to-body-size ratio was not completely confirmed in our sources. For example, I happened to find two opposing conclusions about the postcanines of Canivorans, and while both were equally fascinating, we decided to forfeit the contradicting studies in the scope of our section.

Regardless, thank you for your time and effort. I look forward to hearing from you should there be any additional concerns.

Best,

I was not sure if I was getting into too much detail in my entry, so I am curious if it is a good length. I was also wondering if the draft might be a bit citation heavy, and if all my sources meet Wikipedia's standards.

I would really appreciate any advice you could give me. Thank you! --David Potts (talk) 02:23, 16 November 2016 (UTC)  Done[reply]

Question[edit]

Morning Ian,

My name is Trevor Jenkins and I am enrolled in PoliSci 160AA with Prof. Bergman at UCSD. I have a discrepancy with my 'contributions' record. Our class had an assignment due 11/4, I finished this assignment on 11/2 (as can be seen on the 'contributions' page), however my last submission for 'critiquing an article', which consisted of two questions/comments was not recorded into my 'contributions' page...Thus, I did not receive credit for this part of our assignment. Prof. Bergman has no record of my entires either. After debating this with my Professor, I believe the only way this discrepancy may have happened is that my wifi service might have gone out some time after what I see here in my 'contributions' page:

17:18, 2 November 2016 (diff | hist) . . (+166)‎ . . Talk:Cannabis in California ‎ (Update Introduction to Policy Analysis assignment details) (Tag: dashboard.wikiedu.org [2.0])

Thus, I believe my last submission on 11/2/16 was not included into my "contributions" as well as not 'time-stamped' due to wireless internet connectivity issues. Is there any way to confirm this? I am trying to get credit for the work I already completed, and frankly I find this confusing, I would appreciate an explanation.

Also, I would prefer email exchanges if possible--thanks in advance.

Sincerely, Trevor Jenkins tjjenkin@ucsd.edu — Preceding unsigned comment added by Trevor Jenkins (talkcontribs) 18:08, 16 November 2016 (UTC)  Done[reply]

Need help with Uploading Photos to Wikipedia page[edit]

Hello Ian,

My group's project includes adding content to the University of Nebraska State Museum page. One of my duties includes uploading photos to the Wikipedia page that capture the displays, shop, and overall appearance of the building. I went to the museum and took photos of various displays and the building. Since the museum is a public entity and I captured the photos myself, can I upload them to the Wikipedia page? Or are there photo licensing laws that create restrictions with museums? I reviewed a lot of the information found on the Wikimedia Commons page and cannot find clarity with this issue.

Citing an interview?[edit]

Hi Ian,

I'm supposed to be writing a Wikipedia page on a living person. She's a researcher, and sent me a copy of her CV, so I have a lot of verifiable research. She also said that biographies and other online resources are "boring" and so she met me in person so that she could tell me stories about her life.

I got a lot of fun information out of that meeting, things like stories from her childhood and people who influenced her, but none of these have published things that I can cite. Am I forced, then, not to put them up? My professor insisted that citing a first person interview is the most reliable thing, because usually it is, but I understand Wiki's hesitation with the pages of living people turning into gossip. I'm just unsure of how to make this page everything that she wants it to be.

If I have a few lines of person things that I can cite to an interview, will they just be removed?

Help request for image use verification User:Gmarquartmsg (User talk: Gmarquartmsg)[edit]

Hello Ian,

I want to ad an Image of the scientist, Sara Imari Walker, who I made a page of for my class, but I am unsure if it falls under an image I can use. I emailed her and asked her permission to make the page at the beginning of my class. She responded quickly and said yes. A few weeks later when I realized there aren't any photos of her in the Wiki commons picture data base I sent her an email asking her if she had any preference on an image to use for her wiki page. I never received a response. However, she has several photos online on other websites. Therefore, I uploaded an image Sara_Imari_Walker.png from her research group's website at Arizona state. http://emergence.asu.edu/sara-walker.html, and in the description of the upload I put: where I got the photo from, who the author was, and that I did not receive permission from the person or the photographer. I was waiting for a more experienced Wikipedia person to come along and tell me if it is ok to use or if I need to take it down.

My question is, based on what I've told you, and looking at my link to the site I found it on, do you know what I should do? Can I use this photo as is, should I take it down, could I use it if I get her permission, and if so how do I verify with Wikipedia that I received that permission? Thank you for your time.

Do you know how I can take the image down then, since I have not gotten a response from the author yet and I am not sure if I will. Help request for possible page title change User:Gmarquartmsg (User talk: Gmarquartmsg)[edit]

Hello Ian, I made the page Sara Imari Walker for my class assignment. The scientist I made the page of requested that I remove her middle name from the title, just as a preference but not a necessity. I told her I can edit the content of the page but not the title once the page is live on wikipedia, but that I would see what wikipedia could do.

My question is, is it possible to change the title of the page to Sara Walker instead of Sara Imari Walker, and if so how can I do that?

Thank you.

Need help request from Lourdes Ramirez[edit]

Hello Ian.

I need help with the wikipedia page for Jenni Ruiza. This is what I have so far.

Jenni Ruiza is a latina producer, actress and comedian and writer from Bronx, New York. She is currently the co founder of Comedy High, a “full service comedy production company - producing female-driven comedy that's intelligent, risque and unique! Currently producing sketch comedy, web sitcoms, short films and anything else that tickles our funny-fancy!”. She is also a co host of the podcast, Fixx Podcast. Starting at a young age, Ruiza began her career in middle school, where she would write screen plays. She make herself the starting role of each along side the women who inspire her. These women include Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, and Meryl Streep. At that young of an agee Ruiza realize the humanization of the characters the actresses played through their TV disguises which played with subtlety and humor. Ruiza was hooked on shows like Mama’s Family, I Love Lucy, Roseanne, The honeymooners and more (1). These along with the actresses mentioned prior not only inspired Ruiza but gave her a sense of direction. She wanted to star in tv shows and film, focusing on her love for comedy. Yet Ruiza was aware of the issues and obstacles that she would have to deal with being a latina.

Ruiza knew early in her career that if she wanted the leading role with as little struggle as possible she would simply have to create the content. She acknowledged the fact that as a latina roles like hot tempered, thick accents and sassiness were a box that she would be put into. Not only that but as a woman the sexualization would be at an all time high. The need for women to be sexy, skinny but curvy and submissive is a reality for many in the industry. In her case, she wanted to do comedic roles, a category that is already scarce. Bringing in this category opens up another issue with looks. As a women you would either have to be ditzy, over weight or a family oriented women outwitting her dumb husband. All of these factors what lead her to become a producer. One project that brings a better understanding to the stereotypical look of latinas and comediennes that Ruiza was apart of was Latino Stereotypes for Dummies. This short video written by Jesenia uses humor as a way to bring forth the realities of stereotypes that latinos, especially latinas face in the industry. What started the creative juices to flow for this project was Saturday Night Live. Up until this year Saturday Night Live did not have a latina comedienne as apart of their cast. So not only is Ruiza fighting against all of this but also directly attacking networks and shows in order to open doors for not only herself but other Latinas.

Overall Ruiz's work speaks to kind of person she is and what she wants to accomplish in her career but for others in the latino community, especially young latinas. Ruiza states,“I want to be able to change the face of Latinas in comedy. Why can't a Latina play a role like Daria's or star in huge blockbuster without showing my tits? I want to pave the way for little girls who watch TV and go see movies, so they can feel like there's a place for them in entertainment, too.” (1) Thus she is not only a comedian, an actress or a producer but an activist and an example of what you can do with an entertainment industry career. As the co founder of Comedy High, she and her coworkers work to create eye opening content and content with substance yet still using their humor to lighten the blow of these realities that many latinos face in the entertainment industry.

Another project that she is deeply involved in is the podcast The Fixx. Unlike female entertainers from the past, Ruiza has a new platform, the internet. With the power to broadcast freely to anyone in the world for free, Ruiza uses it to her advantage. Podcasting is free and obtainable to the public at any time. Ruiza uses this platform to not only promote herself, and her talents but to voice her opinions. Once again Ruiza uses her sense of humor to enlighten and lighten the topics at hand. She as an entertainer showcases a form of satire that is also informational. Along with the podcast, Ruiza also actively takes part in web series and web shorts and commercials. The internet has allowed her and many others to reach as far as anyone can go, around the world and back. Her works are appropriate for any age and gender.Ruiza does not worry about staying in the comfort zone for anyone and takes things outside the box. Some of her works include Goddesses in the Loo ,In Case of Emergency, and Luminosity (1). Her long list of roles proves that you can do what you love, speak your opinions and also have room to allow yourself to have fun in your career.

WGST215 course project question[edit]

Hi Ian, I have a question regarding my sandbox. I am writing an article on Mary Sherwood, but I also wrote two short stubs (not in the same sandbox) that link to this person; I am wondering where I should put these two stubs...in my sandbox along with the article or is there a separate place they can/should go? Thanks.

Problem with some student edits[edit]

I was about to post at RSN but decided to post it here first. Besides a few other problems, the text doesn't seem to match the sources, and there's clearly an essay style to the edits which has resulted in original research, but that's not surprising.

Camel#The Health Benefits of Camel Meat starts with the sentence "The medical and food research have proved that meat of a camel is safer than meat from other animals." The source for the first few sentences can be found here. It certainly doesn't back the "safer" claim. It doesn't say " high benefit of reduced cardiac diseases" but it does mention that the "healthy level of minerals... is an important factor in combating the risk of cardiovascular disease, which is attributed to saturated fat consumption." The source doesn't mention tumors. Although it mentions glycogen it only links that to making the meat sweet, nothing in the source backs " high level of glycogen hence can be used to reduce body fatigue (Tariq et al., 2010)." The next source is a newspaper article, and the source after that seems to be [2] - an anonymous blog. I didn't go any further, and didn't look into the issues in the urine section.

It's been added by a student in the Howard program, User:Afnan.mohy, but copied from the sandbox of another student, User:Areejalaamer/sandbox which complicates things slightly as it's a copyright violation, but that can be fixed.

Among other things of course this seems to be giving medical advice, I presume you know about WP:MEDRS.

Thanks. Ping me if you want to discuss this. I'm not reverting at the moment but obviously this needs to be fixed.

Need help request from Bader15 h (talk)[edit]

Hello Ian.

I need help with Collaborative decision-making software article .

I suggest some points in the Technology factors that underpin enterprise CDM section.

I would change the second factor to be :

Fully integrated: Users must be able to discuss their analysis alongside their BI content. Picture this scenario: You’re using your BI tool to search for data on last month’s sales results from the Americas. You find a startling anomaly – sales have skyrocketed compared to previous months. Why? What has been done differently? How can you replicate the results? If the CDM platform is within the BI tool, you can immediately start the investigation, inviting others into the conversation in full view of the data. There’s no need to set up meetings and discussions in isolation from your data set. The collaborative process remains clearly documented in a single open-access space, and discussion remains on topic – the underlying information (data) is right there. To enable successful CDM, both your collaborative platform and information should be in the one place.

Hey Ian, I was on the verge of PRODding this for deletion. It's essay-like, and seems to be little more than a collection of randomly picked examples. I hope the other projects in that classroom are more promising--I saw some titles that gave me concern. Thanks, Drmies (talk) 04:56, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Drmies. I will follow up with this in the morning and see if there's any way to work with the instructor and student to salvage something useful from this. I think I see the idea they were getting at, though I'm not sure if it can be turned into an article. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 07:02, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Abandoned course at University of Southern California? And offer to help with sanitation-related articles[edit]

Hi Ian, I come from the WikiProject Sanitation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sanitation). I saw on the page on groundwater pollution that a student from this course: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/University_of_Southern_California/Ecological_Factors_in_Design_(Spring_2016) was meant to work on that page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Groundwater_pollution). Seems like nothing has happened though (since February 2016). I couldn't figure out from the course page if the course was abandoned or if just this one student abandoned the assignment? Could you let me know and perhaps also say something on the course page about it? - I also have a question where to find good example pages of where university instructors have successfully involved their students in editing Wikipedia articles. I've started a little list here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sanitation#Student_assignments But I am sure you probably keep more comprehensive lists? If any university people are interested in getting students to work on pages that are tagged with the WikiProject Sanitation (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiProject_Sanitation#Lists_by_content) I would be happy to help, e.g. with regards to content, photos, structuring, referencing. EvMsmile (talk) 14:09, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have seen that the article for Camden, New Jersey is being updated as part of a student course. There are good edits, there are edits hat need some tweaks or are repetitive, but there are some issues. There were some recent edits that included word-for-word text copied from Public Education in Camden, N.J.: From Inception to Integration, which was removed by another editor and by me as a copyvio. While I have left a note on the student editor's page, it's sometimes hard to tell if new editor's are reading their talk page. I fully support this effort and I only hope that this feedback can help see the page improved. If you're not the best person to talk to about this, please let me know. Alansohn (talk) 17:52, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Alansohn: Thanks for letting me know - I see they've done it twice, but not since you left them a note. I've only seen one or two students repeat it the behaviour after a warning, so I'm hopeful, but if they persist I will get in touch with their instructor. In the meantime, I have hidden those edits. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:41, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've been watching the Camden article and trying to tweak with a light touch. But copyvio issues need to be taken seriously. Thanks for giving the reminder. Alansohn (talk) 18:50, 20 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

But take a look at these edits, where the same copyvio has been added. It's never clear if new users read messages, let alone understand them, but there seems to be no understanding here that there is a major policy violation taking place at the article for Camden, New Jersey. Alansohn (talk) 18:19, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ugh. This is bad. I think a short block might be in order, especially if they're trying to meet a deadline. I contacted the instructor. Thanks Alansohn. Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 20:46, 23 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I happened to review this and was informed by the user they were assigned that specific subject in which to start an article, the only concern is that Lindsay is in fact non-notable and the student apparently needed to have it published for the class. I'm not sure who was the professor in class that assigned this specific subject, but it seems someone was not entirely familiar with our notability policies before suggesting article subjects. SwisterTwister talk 04:53, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@SwisterTwister: I noticed that a few students in that class seemed to have misconception. Helaine got in touch the with professor and asked that she clear this up for her students, but I'm not sure if she heard back from her. I will follow up on this.
