Q 50.04

A rhyming riddle (on User:Dwaipayanc request)

I am he who held me
Eons ago was I born
Let your cattle feed on me
And come be sheltered from the storm

A (sentence long) explanation would be a bonus. Abecedare (talk) 10:56, 22 October 2013 (UTC)

Huh, totally bowled. Govardhan hill is my first guess.--Dwaipayan (talk) 21:04, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Govardhan Hill is right! The references in line 1, 3 and 4 are to: the hill being identified (not only associated) with Krishna, the "Holder of Govardhan"; lit. trans as "cow nourisher"; and well, duh, . The floor is yours. Abecedare (talk) 23:08, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
Damn, I got it right on the first guess!! That's impressive :) --Dwaipayan (talk) 16:52, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
Damn ! And I read the whole of Govardhan Hill & thought It is Krishna who lifted Mt. Govardhan & held it up as protection to his people & cattle from the rain.

Q 50.05

A, a scientist, was about to make an expedition to experiment on a certain theory/hypothesis. He needed certain instrument but the one he received was not functional. B helped him make a new version of the instrument, by a novel use of a traditional equipment used normally for a totally different purpose. The wife of A was a companion of him in this expedition, and helped him to carry out the data analysis experiment. Such company by a wife impressed C, another scientist, to champion the cause of women's education. Later, A's reports (not directly related to the said expedition) were vital during a secretly coordinated project. Identify these personalities.--Dwaipayan (talk) 02:19, 26 October 2013 (UTC)

William Siri and his wife Jean. KAS(talk) 15:20, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Incorrect, but nice guess. William Siri has many similarities with the A.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:43, 26 October 2013 (UTC)
Closest I could get was him; Expedition with wife; worked on secret project different from expedition; If no one answers, when will the answer be published; Nice Question; KAS(talk)

Clue 1 The traditional equipment that was creatively used to make the scientific instrument is normally used for a particular addictive habit.--Dwaipayan (talk) 18:35, 27 October 2013 (UTC)

It is about an apparatus used for diving/SCUBA, inspired from Hookah. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 09:17, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
You got the traditional thing right (hookah), but the scientific instrument is not correct.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:38, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
Very interesting. I am guessing that A is Arthur Compton, who came to India to conduct cosmic ray experiments with his wife Betty Compton, and crafted an electroscope using a hookah bowl, in C. V. Raman's lab (B). Nazir Ahmad (C) was the one inspired by the Arthur-Betty collaboration. My sources: this interview with Betty and Capri's From Quanta to Quarks: More Anecdotal History of Physics. Right or in a parallel universe? Abecedare (talk) 14:03, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
You are in the right universe, absolutely. Yes, this was a rather interesting finding that I stumbled upon. Your turn, please.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:23, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
All new to me too. And the Betty interview (which I have only skimmed) is a fount of physics gossip. Example:

Later Arthur had a chance to keep Raman and Bhatnagar from India from each other’s throats in India. Oh, my, that was another hot thing. You really felt you had someone who was going to commit murder practically at that point. Raman, in front of the prime minister, had spoken up. You see, Bhatnagar was responsible for about eight scientific institutes being formed in India -- laboratories: a physics laboratory, a chemical laboratory, a textile laboratory, about eight or nine of them. And it was at the opening of the chemical laboratory at Poona that the Prime Minister spoke. And Raman got up and just as much as said, “This is foolishness, laboratories like this. You’re just pouring money down a rat hole,” something strongly like that. Well, here was Bhatnagar who was responsible, and here we were dining with the two of them just as mad as hops. I can see Arthur walking down between them yet, down the road, and I didn’t know what was going to happen. Bhatnagar said, “Raman, haven’t you any sense? Don’t you know enough not to say that in front of the Prime Minister? Here we’re hoping to interest him in further laboratories.” “Well, I believe that.” It was horrible.

Anyway, next Q coming up. Easy one, so keep your fingers on the ready over the keyboard/tablet/phone. Abecedare (talk) 14:51, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Q 50.06

A associated his predecessor B with C. B had never even been in the same place as, or seen, C and opposed being so linked. Yet A prevailed and B is now chiefly known because of the connection. Identify A, B, or C. Abecedare (talk) 14:58, 28 October 2013 (UTC)

Clue 1: C is a geographical feature... very well known. Abecedare (talk) 01:20, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

Q 50.07

A was arrested and executed. B's birthday, according to some sources, is supposed to be celebrated as a particular type of day. The nuptial relationship between C and D was notable for "exceptional" beginning and ending. A, B, C are siblings. Find A, B, C, and D.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:08, 30 October 2013 (UTC)

  • Clue 1. A was a member of at least one non-Indian communist party.--Dwaipayan (talk) 03:44, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Is it -
A = Virendranath Chattopadhyaya alias Chatto (was arrested during the Great Purge of Stalin and executed) [He joined the German Communist Party (KPD)].
B = Sarojini Naidu, The Nightingale of India. Her birthday is celebrated as women's day all over India.
C = Harindranath Chattopadhyay. (Also, famous for his poem Rail Gaadi on AIR (Akashavani). The song was memorably sung by Ashok Kumar in the film Aashirwad). Married to a widow Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay much to the opposition of the orthodox society of the times, which was still heavily against widow marriage. Eventually after many years of marriage, they parted amicably. Here again, Kamaladevi broke a tradition by filing for divorce. Their divorce marked the very first legal separation granted by the courts of India. - Ninney (talk) 06:05, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Indeed nice question. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 06:37, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Yes, you are correct, Ninney. Your turn now.--Dwaipayan (talk) 13:13, 2 November 2013 (UTC)
Just a quick comment. That Women's Day thing on Naidu's birthday is probably not so correct. I am not sure who exactly declared that. Definitely it is not observed with vigour all over India.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:03, 2 November 2013 (UTC)

Q 50.12

This literary work has many Indian language adaptations.

  • In a Hindi version, written by X in the 19th century, the heroes and heroine are Arya (Hindu) while the villain is Jain. The (supposed) historical antagonism and different values of the two communities undergirds the personal drama of the plot.
  • In a Tamil adaptation, written by Y some years later, the protagonists they are Tamil Shaivas and Jain respectively.
  • In a Marathi version (whose author and title I don't know) they are Brahmin and Buddhist respectively.

Identify the original work, which has no Hindus, Jain, or Buddhists in it, and X and Y. Abecedare (talk) 08:39, 11 November 2013 (UTC)

No guesses yet?

Clue 1: Both X and Y have been called the founders and/or amongst the greatest modern practitioners of their literary/artistic field (in Hindi and Tamil respectively). The author of the original work has earned similar, or even broader, superlatives. Abecedare (talk) 01:39, 12 November 2013 (UTC)

The Merchant of Venice,Bharatendu Harishchandra,Pammal Sambandha Mudaliar?-- Raghith (Talk) 04:15, 13 November 2013 (UTC)
Perfect. This Hindi translation was titled Durlabh Bandhu, while the Tamil was Vanipura Vanikan. Sources: this article by Sishir Kumar Das (see pages 58, 59 and 72), and The Shakespearean International Yearbook: Special Section Shakespeare in India. Shakespeare in India or Shakespeare in Indian languages would make a nice article, if someone wants to give it a try (there are sufficient sources available).

She is involved with children's program. I can even remember the signature tune for "Phulwari Bacchon ki...". Definitely should have got this earlier. --Dwaipayan (talk) 15:48, 25 December 2013 (UTC)
Dwaipayan cracks it. Thanks for appreciating the Q. I can feel the excitement of Ninney after he mentally cracked it. Over to Dwaipayan. See you in 2014. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 16:39, 25 December 2013 (UTC)
Yes Preeti Sagar - (Love is like an ocean) shot to instant fame with her English song My Heart is Beating keeps on repeating in the movie Julie.
oh no ! not Dwaipayan. I can still have a chance to win or tie the Quiz round.
Somebody please update the Scoreboard first ... - Ninney (talk) 16:57, 25 December 2013 (UTC)
It was a good question, But :( I guessed earlier it was Preeti sagar, as per clue, but could not find any relation with Verghese Kurien. Can someone elobrate it. Regards :) --Omer123hussain (talk) 06:48, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
Preeti Sagar is a playback singer for the folk song Mero Gaam Katha Parey in Manthan in 1978. Manthan (The film manthan meaning the Churning) is a 1976 Hindi film made by Shyam Benegal, based on a story written jointly by Verghese Kurien (the Father of the White Revolution in India) and director Shyam Benegal. It is set amidst the backdrop of the White Revolution of India (Operation Flood) which started in 1970, ushering an era of plenty, from a measly amount of milk production and distribution. Nandan Nilekani is an Indian entrepreneur and the Chairman of the UIDAI, In 2010, PS sang for the UIDAI ID project's official theme song, Yeh Hai Meri Pehchaan. - Ninney (talk) 07:09, 26 December 2013 (UTC)
More direct relation. Amul is a product from Verghese and Aadhar is a product/service from Nandan. Both got voice of Preeti. --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 10:17, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Wow very intresting research and linking done by Su_hit, and well catch by Ninney and Dwaipayanc. Regards :)--Omer123hussain (talk) 12:48, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Q 50.22

Person X was born in a place which later became notable as a hideout. Person X was noted in his own field of work, and was instrumental in creating the first edition of a nationally important "list" or "guide". His home was designed by an architect who also designed a capital city. Who is X?--Dwaipayan (talk) 16:37, 26 December 2013 (UTC)

Any clue plz :)--Omer123hussain (talk) 14:01, 29 December 2013 (UTC)
Clue 1: The architect who designed the home X designed a national capital city.--Dwaipayan (talk) 17:28, 30 December 2013 (UTC)
Udit Narayan Singh, who started the tradition of Ramlila. Narain House in Banaras was designed by Walter Burley Griffin who also designed the Australian capital, Canberra. --Natrajdr (talk) 16:46, 31 December 2013 (UTC)
First, I apologize for the delay. I was not able to be online for a few days. Now, regarding your attempt, that is not what I had in my mind. But definitely this person also almost meets the clues given in the question. So, we can consider this as an answer if no better answers are given.
Clue 2: medicines.--Dwaipayan (talk) 21:38, 5 January 2014 (UTC)
Clue 3. The place where X was born became notable as a hiding place within the past 5 years.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:07, 8 January 2014 (UTC)
Is it about list of Medicine or pharma products? --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 03:41, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, Suresh is going in the right direction.--Dwaipayan (talk) 07:11, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
It is tricky. Is the hideout place in India? --— Preceding unsigned comment added by Sureshpurohit (talkcontribs) 12:04, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
For more than a week, I had been searching for this so called Person X ... sometimes I got the person but not the list/ guide ... & sometimes I got the architect (Designer of a capital City) but not the person ... & now comes the Pharma .... Anyway, Is it Dilip Shanghvi ? If not then you got to give a simplest clue possible. - Ninney (talk) 14:59, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
Clue 4 and 5. The hideout town is not in India. And Natrajdr got the architect, Walter Griffin, correct.--Dwaipayan (talk) 20:30, 9 January 2014 (UTC)
* I hope the person X is Dr. Bir Bhan Bhatia, born in Abbottabad—(now in pakistan)(Abbottabad was a hideout town of Osama bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad). Walter Burley Griffin who designed Canberra the capital of Australia, had also designed Bhatia House located in Luckhnow. The government of India appointed Dr. Bhatia to the Medical council of India and to the "Central committee entrusted to frame the first National formulary of India". He is among the first recipient of "Padma shri" award in 1954.[1][2] Hope he is the right person. Regards :)----Omer123hussain (talk) 14:22, 11 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes, Omer is correct. He has explained all the clues correctly. It is Bir Bhan Bhatia. Your turn, Omer.--Dwaipayan (talk) 14:29, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Wow hurray :), It was also a difficult task, but Su_hit guess and Dwaip's last clue helped to find the answer. Regards :)--Omer123hussain (talk) 19:01, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Q 50.23

Before Indian Independence "X" commission was delegated by Britain's experts, "X" commision was set twice in India within consecutive years of the 19th century. "Y" is an Indian person and arguably the first in the world among its gender, to be qualified in the field related to the "X" commission. Find "X" (commission name) and "Y" (person name—this person "Y" was not a member of visiting delegation but played a significant role in the "X" commission's conclusion.) Regards :)--Omer123hussain (talk) 20:19, 11 January 2014 (UTC)

Clue-1:- "X" commission is related to Medical science and "Y" is a lady. :)--Omer123hussain (talk) 07:51, 13 January 2014 (UTC)
Clue-2:- The "X" commissions conclusions had directly or indirectly benefited the general surgeons performances worldwide and the lady "Y" probably belongs from Parsi community. :)--Omer123hussain (talk) 05:36, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
Dr Roopa Bai Furdoonji --Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 03:53, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

This is really enlightening.--Dwaipayan (talk) 04:51, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
checkYCorrect answer Su_hit. Its your turn now.
"X" commission = First and Second Hyderabad chloroform commission consecutively commissioned in 1888 and 1889.[3]
"Y" Dr. Roopa Bai Furdoonji, arguably she was the first lady physician anesthesiologist in the world.[4], Unfortunately very less is written and researched about her.:) --Omer123hussain (talk) 06:44, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

Q 50.25

Thank you Su_hit, a very easy question now. X is a term used during the customary public worship in Judaism and Christianity, Y composed music for a film which had a song by the name X. The film was released in Tamil and Telugu simultaneously. When the film was remade in Hindi, a religious forum had objected and had asked the producers to remove the song. Identify the term or the film .-sarvajna (talk) 07:14, 18 January 2014 (UTC)

Hosanna and A R Rahman--Suresh Purohit (Su_hit) (talk) 11:47, 18 January 2014 (UTC)
Yes Su_hit, that is the right answer.-sarvajna (talk) 18:53, 19 January 2014 (UTC)
