Trying to edit page?[edit]

Marquis Cooper's death[edit]

Should we list Marquis Cooper as deceased? I saw on Yahoo! news that the search for him and Corey Smith was called off today, as they would've found survivors by now. Absolutely not. Until a reliable source confirms death - i.e. they find a body he is legally missing presumed dead. Presumptions about the odds maybe enough reason for the coastguard to call of a search and save their budget but they are not a reason for us to publish incorrect facts. He's "presumed dead". That's a ruling by search-and-rescue personnel. That's not the same as being declared legally dead. The legal declaration may come in several months, after family members petition a court, and only has the purpose of disposing of a missing person's estate. See Steve Fossett, who went missing with his airplane in September 2007, but the first evidence of remains didn't show up until a year later. However, his widow petitioned the court and had him declared legally dead within six months of his disappearance. Since Cooper, Smith and Bleakley evidently removed their life jackets, unless someone were to find the bodies floating within a week or so, it is likely that no remains will ever be found. Unsigned comment relocated to end of page[edit]

Devastating news in the search for Marquis Cooper, Corey Smith and Will Bleakley. FANHOUSE released an article about 2 hours ago, in the article Schuyler (the man found clinging to the boat Monday afternoon) according to him, Cooper and Smith both gave up hope. "We were told that Nick said the two NFL players took their life jackets off and drifted out to sea," said Bob Bleakey, whose Son Will, 25, is also still missing. Nick said that two to four hours after the boat tipped over in rough waters, one of the two NFL players decided he'd had enough. A few hours later, the second one did the same thing. If that isn't enough, Schuyler said that Will Bleakley who stayed hanging on the capsized boat with Nick, told him he saw a light in the distance and decided to try and swim for it.

This is very very sad news if it is true. Lets hope not.

Thanks for the information. If true, it might need to be added. The reason that the article is locked is to ensure that uncited and potentially damaging information is not added to a Biography. State gov't photos and report about boating accident[edit]

for reports (PDF format) and photos about the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's investigation into the accident, including interviews with the survivor that includes relevant details that suggest the victims spent hours on top of the capsized boat in chest-deep water which was at a temperature that meant they were likely to die within 19 hours. The report notes they had three wearable flotation devices, one throwable flotation device, and a large cooler they also used for flotation. All three apparently died of hypothermia rather than drowing; according to the interview, Cooper died first (March 1), and that after his death, one of the other victims removed the flotation device Cooper wore, and that his body was allowed to "become separated" from the capsized boat. Smith died within an hour of Cooper, but not before removing his own flotation device; Bleakley died on March 2, and like Smith, removed his flotation device before doing so.

It's not clear from the state's report why both Smith and Bleakley chose to remove their flotation devices before becoming separated from the boat since by then the survivor had several flotation aids in his possession.

It seems that Paradoxical undressing occurs when a person suffers from severe hypothermia. This could possibly explain why the three men removed their life jackets. But, I don't know for sure. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 22:13, 28 March 2009 (UTC))[reply]

Here's how I worded it:
Later in March, a report was released based on a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigation into the capsizing; the investigation included interviews with Schuyler (the survivor) and an inspection of the boat. The report concluded the following:
  • the anchor line was tied to the port-side transom as part of a (mistaken) plan to free the anchor;
  • the vessel, which had a 200 horsepower (150 kW) motor, was then throttled forward; and
  • the rear of the vessel was pulled into the water because the vessel's motor has been throttled without enough slack in the anchor line;
  • the capsizing ejected the operator and occupants into rough Gulf waters.
The conclusions were accompanied by addition details from the Schuyler interviews. According to Schuyler, after the capsizing, he and the other three men, all wearing flotation devices, struggled overnight in chest-deep water to remain on top of the capsized hull of the boat. Two of the three missing men became non-responsive and separated from the vessel between 5:30 and 6:30 the morning of March 1, and the third became non-responsive and separated about 24 hours later, which was less than six hours before Schuyler was rescued. The investigator described the symptoms Schuyler witnessed as characteristic of hypothermia.
