Could use your help with Mat article

Hi, bro. I have provided a Russian / English translation for the Mat article. Unfortunately, one of the editors has been reverting some of my edits. He appears to think that the translation is 'original research'. I am completely blown away by this stance as I have provided the translation from Russian into English using my own skills in both languages. By definition, there can't be any 'verifiable sources' other than my work and my word.

Just wondered why my pages are being deleted? All the content on them is factually correct and nothing is contentious or offensive. I'm wanting to preserve the information from this year to view in future years.--[that was from Chrispalmer10(?)]

Thanks, Secondarywaltz, and thanks for the feedback. That was about this correction from Yangmei (Taiwan) to Yangmei (Shenzen). FYI i arrived at this just because Yangmei disambiguation page had built up a good number of incoming dablinks, including this one at Puxin Station. I did try to notify the editor who created the dablink by my pinging them from Talk:Puxin Station, so it would get more eyeballs anyhow. Gee thanks. Is this a poke with a sharp stick? Without commenting on what it means, i'd say keep, though it could be tagged as historical. Some might say it's part of wikiproject history, and deleting it would reduce--and skew to one side--anyone's ability to understand how some serious past disagreements in the wikiproject played out. Wikipedia is amazing for sociologists and others to study, because there is a (nearly) complete and publicly available record of its processes, if the materials are not simply deleted (to save space?). --doncram 23:09, 7 August 2015 (UTC)

How far is a paul?

This source I was using refers to "pauls" a unite of distance. I believe it's form 1849. I can't find anything about such a measurement or usage. Any ideas? Is it a religious thing liek a reference to St. Paul maybe in tribute? Where should I ask? Just curious. Thanks. OrganicEarth (talk) 18:39, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

No doubt St. Paul was taller than the short Harvard [short-ish MIT] student who was used like a yardstick to count the distance in smoots across a bridge. :) --doncram 19:18, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

OrganicEarth, probably you mean Paua, not Paul? Lots of hits on "measure Paua" and "Paua measure". NZ regulations per "Guidelines for gathering paua" specifies 80mm or 125mm size limits for two species. I like this tool which has a "paua measure", for use when diving. --doncram 19:29, 13 August 2015 (UTC)

Stumbled across this discussion: It might indeed be related to St Paul, but via the London church (or should that be cathedral, even in the 12th century?). I understand from an internet source that, in at attempt to define the foot more carefully, the length of the "foot of St Paul" was used. So, the author is being precise by defining which defintion of 'foot' he is using, in a time when definitions of this measure varied around the world. See also de pedibus Sancti Pauli. A bit more on the this. I looked up the Oxford English Dictionary (online through local library), which has "Paul's foot" defined as "Paul's foot n. Obs. a unit of measurement equivalent to the length of the foot of the figure of Algar (Ethelgar) carved on the base of a column in old St Paul's Cathedral." with quotations demonstrating its use ranging in date from 1380 to 1852. It doesn't seem to be listed under just 'paul' though.Klbrain (talk) 01:01, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Neat stuff! OrganicEarth, are you watching? That is simply very interesting and

• provides definitely interesting trivia to add to Æthelgar (archbishop of Canterbury) article, probably the one depicted at St. Paul's, rather than Algar (a hermit), and to the St. Paul's article, and to some list of distance measures.
• But, like my attempt, this measure comes up short...too short for OrganicEarth's source, where to me it sounds like a Paul must be somewhere between 100 meters and a few kilometers:

• p. 500: "We soon got into forest and jungle, with here and there a few Coffee trees, keeping constantly rising. At a distance of about 6 pauls we came to a small hamlet called Wonosari...."
• p. 85: "...after proceeding westward for a couple of pauls, you again find yourself surrounded by forest and thickly tangled jungle.... ...the breadth of the plain from the hills to the Kediri river is about 20 pauls...

• I wondered before if a "paul" was the distance of Paul the Apostle's "First Missionary Journey", his second one, or his third one but those are hundreds or thousands of kilometers long, too long in context.
• Could a Paul be a different measure from Old St. Paul's Cathedral, such as its length (it was once among the longest cathedrals, apparently)? I don't see its length right away, but the longest cathedrals ever range up towards 212 meters. Or a measure of St. Paul's Cathedral (completed 1720) such as its length, about 158 meters?

Good idea, but the search on word "paul" should have found all instances, including any upfront definition. The Google book is completely readable, just drop the searching on word "paul", as in this view of the book (with search field at left being empty). Browsing just a little, I don't find any explanation. Maybe search on "measurement" or other terms? It seems to be a collection of serious papers, so outright joking seems unlikely, but nonetheless it could be an inside term among the academics(?) writing the papers. --doncram 05:26, 19 August 2015 (UTC)

Undid your changes regarding Dalrymple

Hi, in hindsight, I'm not so sure anymore about your changes I undid regarding Dalrymple. Turns out there is a bit of confusion about a Dalrymple in East and South Ayrshire, although it looks to be the same one. I left a message on the Scottish board, they should be able to figure it out. And in retrospect I could have been wrong too. I recall figuring out that there was just one Dalrymple, and that it was near the border, and I figured the border had changed at some point. Dalrymple appeared to be in East Ayrshire now. But just now, I am able to bring up this view in Google Maps (by searching for East Ayrshire, which highlighted the area, not searching on Dalyrmple). So it shows Dalrymple truly being right at the border or spanning the border (East Ayrshire in red-bordered area to right; South Ayrshire to the left). When zoom in it appears the dividing line is the River Doon, there, with the biggest part of Dalrymple settlement being on the north side (East Ayrshire). Property on either side could be "in Dalrymple", perhaps. I had not found nothing suggesting it is a legal township or a formal entity; I don't know whether the Parish of Dalrmple would have a strict border, so maybe it is a community that has fluid border and spans the river. Thanks, Midas02 for paying attention. My edits there should be reviewed. However, if an error was made it wasn't a big one, it is just referring to the other side of the river not a faraway place. --doncram 04:31, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

• The Lindston Loch must be in East Ayrshire, because the box mentions outflow via Dustyhall Burn that joins the Purclewan Burn. The latter is a stream then joining River Doon from the north (East Ayrshire) side. In my edit I replaced Dalrymple by Dalrymple, East Ayrshire, which would be correct. I further now suspect the "South Ayrshire" also mentioned in the article is incorrect...but as used in the article it is once part of the phrase "South Ayrshire Council District", could a district mainly in South Ayrshire span the border, i don't know, so I would not change that. doncram 04:49, 14 August 2015 (UTC)
• Thorntons Gap changed in this diff correctly put that in Australia.
• Kerse Loch's outflow is to the Kerse Burn, and this Google view shows a Kerse Burn north of the Doon, so my replacing Dalrymple by Dalrmple, East Ayrshire was correct. (But again there is a "South Ayrshire" there, that I did not change.)

Those three were the only Dalrymple ones I did; i must have lacked confidence in other cases so I moved on. Looks to me like my edits were correct as far as they went. I'm not going to change anything further and trust you can put these right. Hope this info helps in getting any local consultation, too. Cryptophyte dab at Ipomoea oenotherae

Hi Doncram. I cleaned up this article in response to another editor's request, because they saw that I'm a German translator. From German Wiki and other articles, I assumed cryptophyte referred to the first of the 2 entries at cryptophyte which doesn't have its own article, so I thought it best to leave it pointing to the dab page rather than leave it unlinked. However, I'm not a botanist so cannot be certain this is the right meaning, nor could I create the article for it. The reason I may have a few "ambiguous link" hits is that I'm fairly prolific at translating articles so out of the thousands of links that I create during translation, a few are bound to point to dab pages. Dutch Reform v. Emmanuel / Immanuel

Greetings Doncram. Do you know anything about churches? I'm curious about the Dutch Reformed Churches I've come across in the Dutch East Indies. At least a few have become Emmanuel / Immanuel churches. I found an article on the Dutch Reformed Church, but the Immanuel Church / Emmanuel Church aritcle is just a list. And includes Baptist, Episcopal and Lutheran churches. I suppose it makes sense that in independent Indonesia attending a "Dutch.. Church" would be perhaps weird? But what is an Emmanuel / Immanuel Church? How different is it from Dutch Reformed? Is it just a generalized basket for Protestant churches? I noticed that there are also Emmanuel AME churches. Who was Immanuel / Emmanuel? I gather it means God is with Us and it a name of the child the Bible says will be born to a virgin.. so this is just another name for Jesus while also saying God is with us? spinhuis or spinnhus

I have another random question.. do you know why jails are called spinning houses? Spinning house is even a redirect to house of correction. Interestingly in the Midwest they actually had jails that spun so cells could be accessed one at a time (rotary jail). In Dutch jails seem often to be called spinhuis.. For this one, i know to search about in conjunction with Stockholm, Sweden... yep, there is a spinnhus bridge...yes, here is what i was looking for: Långholmens spinnhus. I read this article with a fair amount of horror, a while back, that women deemed "defenceless" were rounded up and imprisoned, to work there. Maybe that was better than other alternatives. The article suggests it follows Dutch rasp and spinnhus... oh, here is Rasphuis for the men, literally rasping wood into powder, while "female criminals were sent to the spinhuis". Spinhuis and Spinnhus are both currently redlinks; wanna change that? (I'd start by translating nl:Spinhuis (Amsterdam), i'd be happy to, actually.) --doncram 01:34, 23 August 2015 (UTC)

New Beacon School

You make perfectly valid points. The problem is partly caused by the earlier edits having been made by an anon IP or IPs in repeated "drive-by" edits, and you'll see that I requested semi-protection in order to deal with this problem. Although it was perfectly reasonable for the content about the case in question to be included, this was done in such a way as to emphasize this matter over all others, and clearly implied blame on the part of several named members of the school staff. (I should make it quite clear, in case of doubt, that none of the staff at the school, past or present, are known to me.) Though I always prefer to assume good faith, it became obvious that the anon(s) had a personal grievance and was trying to use the article to discredit the school, knowing what a wide audience wikipedia attracts. In the context of such a case, it is not surprising that there would be strong feelings on the matter, but I know you'll agree that it is not our job to decide whether they are justified or to allow the article to become biased.

If you check out all the edits (which would probably take rather a long time) you'll see, I believe, that I made many attempts to bring the anon edits into line with policy, rather than simply removing them. However, this was never enough to satisfy them and they simply continued to expand on the basic facts, often duplicating content. Now, as a result of the semi-protection, the person behind most of the anon edits has been flushed out. Several people have edited the article since, and I would not argue that it has been improved by these changes. I'm quite happy to discuss it on the talk page if you'd like to debate exactly which content should be included and how it should be worded. Deb (talk) 11:55, 1 September 2015 (UTC)

Do you think Lamar, Mississippi used to be located in Marshall County, Mississippi, and it is now in Benton County, Mississippi? Hi Zigzig20s. If i recall correctly, the NRIS data will show the "closest city or town" for a given place, even if the closest significant city or town at the time is in another county. So my first guess is that there was not a county border change, but rather Lamar has always been in Benton County and the Lamar entries in Marshall County are near it, across the border. And "Lamar" for the Marshall County ones should be replaced by the Marshall County town(s) in which they are actually located, which can probably be sorted out using map displays (Note Mapquest shows county & town borders that Google & Bing do not; Mapquest shows Lamar is less than 2 miles from the border). But I don't do NRHP work currently and can't help further; follow up at wt:NRHP if you need help, or perhaps one of them will notice this and help you here. But I'm no taxonomist and, with everything going on in my Real Life at the moment, I don't have time to look into it more. Do you think that it would be an issue if you just changed it on that page, and put your rationale in the talk page? That's what I usually do when I'm editing if I think there might be an issue or question. Zigzig20s, you're not aware of it, but I am under a ban that says I should not be editing NRHP articles, else I would have contributed. Not sure if it applies to responding to requests at my talk page. Probably better to contact me by email in the future which is not subject to any ban. Anyhow I can see that back then, when I created the architect article, I was not sure whether Edwin was a typo/misunderstanding or was a different person, because I noted Edwin in a "See also" section. There were lots of other architects whose names were spelled various ways, so it was a good guess then that the place would turn out to be his. Glad you can resolve the question, that it is the same person. There was just a misunderstanding by the site's nominator. So then add the site to the architect's "Works" section perhaps with a footnote explaining the name mixup in supporting documentation, and it would be nice if you'd also record an entry in the project's tracking system for errors here. --doncram 18:24, 3 October 2015 (UTC)

Oh, okay. Zigzig20s, someone else added that "further reading" item as it was not in my last version there. My guess is that it could be effectively unpublished: by a local historian, or it could be an undergrad, masters, or Ph.D. thesis paper, or it could be a library archive file. I suggest inquiring to Vanderbilt University (the publisher or holder of the material, I gather), to find your way to a librarian who could easily find out. Hmm, they have lots of librarians. Noting: I arrived at the American Airlines destinations page because of disambiguation needed there. I found my way to past AFD for that page, which was a 2nd AFD, and there was/is lots of disagreement. Accusing a person you've never interacted with before of making "disruptive" edits seems like an "assumption of bad faith", not a good way to start, though it does communicate battleground mentality and unpleasantness going on there. I went to User talk:Oknazevad to see if an IP had requested that editor to get involved, but no, so it seems likely to have been that editor. I am not the IP editor. I am, however, a watcher of the WT:AIRLINES talk page, and when the IP came to ask about the situation, I jumped in.

Plainly put, the IP's edits were sourced and fully within guidelines, even if he didn't point to the correct guideline. You were the one that started an edit war removing appropriate, sourced information and then overreacted by using a wholly inappropriate tag. So yes, it was disruptive. This is not news to you, Don, you've been here long enough and have had issues before (I also keep an eye on ANI, and other boards). Your behavior was decidedly battlegroundish, and needed to be stopped. Hello, you seem a good person to advice me on this thing after reading your userpage related to bullying. I have been harassed and bullied by Wikipedia Administrators. I feel they impose unhealthy restrictions on good faith editors who want to help and discourage them. I have edited many pages on Wikipedia lying dormant and outdated, some even since 2007-08. Some of my edits were unacceptable to few admins and they started imposing restrictions. I have never engaged in edit warring. I have tried to present my case before them, but they seem biased. I thought I would never come back on Wikipedia but your userpage seems encouraging. Hello there! Happy to be writing this newsletter once more. This month:

We did it!

In July, we launched five pilot WikiProjects: WikiProjects Cannabis, Evolutionary Biology, Ghana, Hampshire, and Women's Health. We also use the new design, named "WPX UI," on WikiProject Women in Technology, Women in Red, WikiProject Occupational Safety and Health. We are currently looking for projects for the next round of testing. If you are interested, please sign up on the Pilots page.

Shortly after our launch we presented at Wikimania 2015. Our slides are on Wikimedia Commons.

Then after all that work, we went through the process of figuring out whether we accomplished our goal. We reached out to participants on the redesigned WikiProjects, and we asked them to complete a survey. (If you filled out your survey—thank you!) While there are still some issues with the WikiProject tools and the new design, there appears to be general satisfaction (at least among those who responded). The results of the survey and more are documented in our grant report filed with the Wikimedia Foundation.

The work continues!

There is more work that needs to be done, so we have applied for a renewal of our grant. Comments on the proposal are welcome. We would like to improve what we have already started on the English Wikipedia and to also expand to Wikimedia Commons and Wikidata. Why those? Because they are multilingual projects and because there needs to be better coordination across Wikimedia projects. More details are available in the renewal proposal.

How can the Wikimedia Foundation support WikiProjects?

The Wikimedia Developer Summit will be held in San Francisco in January 2016. The recently established Community Tech team at the Wikimedia Foundation is interested in investigating what technical support they can provide for WikiProjects, i.e., support beyond just templates and bots. I have plenty of opinions myself, but I want to hear what you think. The session is being planned on Phabricator, the Wikimedia bug tracker. If you are not familiar with Phabricator, you can log in with your Wikipedia username and password through the "Login or Register: MediaWiki" button on the login page. Your feedback can help make editing Wikipedia a better experience.

Disambiguating Washington Township, New Jersey

There are multiple places that share the name Washington Township, New Jersey. In a densely packed state, this often creates confusion, with a pair of these Washington Townships located just miles apart, with one of these Washington Townships surrounding a Washington Borough. I've tried to describe this in various articles by linking to that list of shared names. In this edit, you removed the wikilink to the article, as you did in two other articles for the Washington Townships in Burlington and Gloucester Counties. In two other articles, you changed a link from Washington Township, New Jersey to Washington Township, New Jersey (disambiguation), which merely redirects to the first article.

What is the best way to describe this relationship in the article? I could list the four others (and the one former one) in each article, but it has always appeared to me that the best way is just to link to the list.

Hi Alansohn, I visited and changed those links because they are mainspace links to a disambiguation page (Washington Township, New Jersey) that are not among the limited allowable exceptions to policy/practice disallowing them. The dab page appears in this month's wp:DPL "Disambiguation Challenge"....see it within this list of 1,000 dab pages having inbound links that must be changed.

There is wp:Disambiguation and some guidance in the Style handbook, but in fact IMO the policy is not as clear as it should be. However there is wp:DPL with a lot of machinery that is effectively making mainspace links to dab pages illegal, in most cases. If I didn't come change those someone else participating in wp:DPL would have, within a few days. The general rule is that we don't want to link to dab pages because that brings readers to non-articles...and dab pages should only be used to get them to articles, usually...and links to dab pages are almost always unintended. (In your case however, it was intentional.) If a link to a dab page "X" is intentional, then you can signal that it is intentional by linking to "X (disambiguation)" which should usually be a redirect to "X". That signals to wp:DPL and its associated programs that the link is intended and does not need to be "fixed".

Legitimate permanent links to disambiguation pages often occur in "See also" sections or in "other uses" type hat-notes, but the link should either go explicitly to "X (disambiguation)" (which shows to the reader that they will arrive at a disambiguation page), or it should go to "X (disambiguation)|X" (which displays just "X"). I personally often prefer for the link to show the "(disambiguation)" to inform the reader in advance, when others might not. It is certainly okay for you to link to "X (disambiguation)|X", which displays what you intended and also achieves basically what you intended (for the reader to get to the dab page if they click on it, albeit through a redirect).

On these pages, frankly I didn't pay that much attention to the best way to present the information, while you have applied more editorial care, so I was probably imperfect in my changes. Perhaps/probably wherever I changed it to link to "X (disambiguation)", you should probably change it now to "X (disambiguation)|X". I have to disavow being a "master" at this, but I do now know how to get things out of the target hairs of wp:DPL.  :)

User sandbox:Doncram/sandbox15

You recreated User sandbox:Doncram/sandbox15 after it had correctly been deleted by Anomiebot because "restore redirect that had been deleted by Anomebot. Apparently there was some error, but i don't want bots deleting a personal redirect anyhow." Please don't restore redirects from the main space to your user space, and in general be extra careful when you restore a deleted article or redirect. While you "corrected" the redirect to point ot an existing page, it shouldn't have existed in the first place, and having it deleted twice is overkill. Fram (talk) 14:02, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Fram, what appeared to be in error was the redirect target, which i fixed. Please don't be patronizing, which is how this comes across to me right now. Bots do erroneous and/or useless things all the time, and when a bot does something that seems inexplicable--perhaps because its edit summary itself is erroneous and/or ambiguous and/or written badly by the programmer, it is most sensible to revert it. Frankly the quality of most bot editing that i see is quite shoddy and really horrible for Wikipedia. You must know that, and you're the one who should be careful, about your tone. Perhaps I would read your tone differently on another day, but what you say rubs me the wrong way right now. --doncram 15:13, 2 November 2015 (UTC)

Both the redirect target and the redirect source were wrong. You revised the target from User sandbox:Doncram/Sandbox15 to User:Doncram/sandbox15. One would expect that you would notice that the source also had the wrong "User sandbox:" prefix. You didn't. Right, I did not understand that the "User sandbox:" prefix was a second error; I don't know how it got introduced and I thought that it was a new space like the still-relatively-new "Draft:" space. I chanced upon this recent deletion of late.

Similarly this, a single-use historic account indicating not-inconsiderable knowledge of coinage and the Manx Treasury, showing edit-summaries inconsistent with a completely new user. This addition particularly indicates advanced code-writing and previous experience of wikitables...now where have we seen all that before now? Noble Manx, eh? Pretentious, moi....?

Thanks for sharing about those two. Among the first one's relatively few edits the most telling is probably this one of Sept 28, 2015. I expect, but am not positive, that comparison of the first one's edits to the Sock Puppet Investigation will show direct contradictions of policies and/or assertions made and/or refusals to answer direct questions. The second one is a good catch but perhaps doesn't represent a violation at this point, since it is historic only. I'll browse further.

By the way, I miss most of what must be going on in the "Dad's Army" clip. It seems to be a reversal of Hogan's Heroes? That setup could be funny if shown within a decade or two of the last time a person watched HH. Ah, DA ran 1968-1977, overlapping and following HH 1965-1971. Any other references/parodies go over me head. :( I don't think i have ever heard of that show. Getting better? or worse?

I hesitate to post a Season's Greetings message on other editors’ pages because not everyone celebrates this time of year (and some people are downright miserable), but it sure provides an opportunity to renew old ties, doesn’t it? I was thinking of you when I followed Jimbo’s advice and was clicking thru 10 random articles and one of the articles that showed up was a National Register of Historic Places article.

I don’t remember going thru randoms before - have you? Do you know if it goes thru the complete set of wikipedia articles (as implied by jimbo), or is it only a subset? None of the ten articles which showed up during my "test" were a surprise (2 biographies, 2 geography, one health, one organization, two history, don’t remember the last two, but no "porn" ). I was surprised they all belonged to at least one wiki-project which I recognized except for the history one which belonged to a wikip I did not recognize.

Request for input and assistance

Hi Doncram.

I wanted to ask for your assistance with ongoing issues I am facing on the Emmanuel Lemelson page since I think you offered a few good insights and edits on the Lemelson Capital Management page a few months back. I have been an editor on this page and certainly welcome and respect others' contributions. But two or three editors keep making very destructive edits, including removing multiple paragraphs central to this subject's biographical work, notably his research on several publicly-traded stocks that has been broadly covered in major media (USA Today multiple times, The Wall Street Journal, etc.) and improvements to several other sections, including "Early life and education," "Early business career," and "Religious leadership and philanthropy."

When I question their removal of this well-referenced content that's central to the biography, I get vague criticisms like I am reverting to some older version of the article (untrue), or projecting ownership on the page (untrue), or somehow trying to project the subject in an unjustifiably flattering way (untrue). None of the editors actually seem to take the time to review the improvements and additions they are removing wholesale, even though they are removing well-referenced content that's arguably the most important to the subject's biography and also removing wholesale other important improvements (references requested and added, various formatting and other cleanup, etc.) I've made to several of the article's sections.

I'm hoping you can look at this since reverted version that includes the material they keep removing and the improvements I've made. It's available here: ([1]) and compare it with the live version to which they keep reverting (Emmanuel Lemelson), which removes all of his investment analysis work and the ensuing impact of this work (all heavily covered in major media) on these stocks and also removes these other useful edits, references and cleanup I've constructively addded in other sections.

I've raised my concerns on the talk page and offered to work collaboratively with them, but I'm receiving no interest in that and they seem insistent on maintaining their destructive edits. I'm allowing their very flawed version of the article to stand for now since I think they've reverted me twice.

I really appreciate any assistance you might offer in assessing what I see as the undeniable need to restore the investment research content and these other improvements they keep insisting on oddly removing. Thanks. Orthodox2014 (talk) 18:34, 6 January 2016 (UTC)

What comes next

Some good news: the Wikimedia Foundation has renewed WikiProject X. This means we can continue focusing on making WikiProjects better.

During our first round of work, we created a prototype WikiProject based on two ideas: (1) WikiProjects should clearly present things for people to do, and (2) The content of WikiProjects should be automated as much as possible. We launched pilots, and for the most part it works. But this approach will not work for the long term. While it makes certain aspects of running a WikiProject easier, it makes the maintenance aspects harder.

We are working on a major overhaul that will address these issues. New features will include:

• Creating WikiProjects by simply filling out a form, choosing which reports you want to generate for your project. This will work with existing bots in addition to the Reports Bot reports. (Of course, you can also have sections curated by humans.)
• One-click button to join a WikiProject, with optional notifications.
• Be able to define your WikiProject's scope within the WikiProject itself by listing relevant pages and categories, eliminating the need to tag every talk page with a banner. (You will still be allowed to do that, of course. It just won't be required.)

The end goal is a collaboration tool that can be used by WikiProjects but also by any edit-a-thon or group of people that want to coordinate on improving articles. Though implemented as an extension, the underlying content will be wikitext, meaning that you can continue to use categories, templates, and other features as you normally would.

This will take a lot of work, and we are just getting started. What would you like to see? I invite you to discuss on our talk page.

Ask User:Andrew Jameson who uploaded the first one, which appears like it should be called The Standard or something else, instead; he may have been uploading lots of pics and just made a mistake in labeling. Perhaps he has pics of the other building? Oh, hmm, the two buildings stand side-by-side, as you can see in both photos ... and the nomination document describes an Italianate residence surrounded by larger commercial buildings, so Andrew Jameson's pic appears to be the correct one. And if you download the photos "asset" document you see that it gives multiple pics with captions and shows that the bank-like building is just the one next door; the subject is clearly the smaller building. One database for Wikipedia requests

Development of the extension for setting up WikiProjects, as described in the last issue of this newsletter, is currently underway. No terribly exciting news on this front.

In the meantime, we are working on a prototype for a new service we hope to announce soon. The problem: there are requests scattered all across Wikipedia, including requests for new articles and requests for improvements to existing articles. We Wikipedians are very good at coming up with lists of things to do. But once we write these lists, where do they end up? How can we make them useful for all editors—even those who do not browse the missing articles lists, or the particular WikiProjects that have lists?

Introducing Wikipedia Requests, a new tool to centralize the various lists of requests around Wikipedia. Requests will be tagged by category and WikiProject, making it easier to find requests based on what your interests are. Accompanying this service will be a bot that will let you generate reports from this database on any wiki page, including WikiProjects. This means that once a request is filed centrally, it can syndicated all throughout Wikipedia, and once it is fulfilled, it will be marked as "complete" throughout Wikipedia. The idea for this service came about when I saw that it was easy to put together to-do lists based on database queries, but it was harder to do this for human-generated requests when those requests are scattered throughout the wiki, siloed throughout several pages. This should especially be useful for WikiProjects that have overlapping interests.

The newsletter this month is fairly brief; not a lot of news, just checking in to say that we are hard at work and hope to have more for you soon.

Hi Aoziwe! Thanks for asking. Right, I was browsing AFDs to see where I could contribute, and I noticed the constructive note by Postdlf ("A good place to ask these questions would have been the creator's talk page before starting an AFD. They're clearly brand new and nominating their only contribution for deletion within a day after they created it without trying to discuss it with them first is rather WP:BITEy (even if it should ultimately be deleted).") then the followups by Oshwah ("Seconded.") and yourself ("Yes I agree. See WP:ODNT too. {{yo}} You might coax them towards a merge with Lists of killings by law enforcement officers, that is, make this (latter) article more than just a list and add some encyclopedic value to it."). I "thanked" P & O also. I happen to believe strongly that AFD is a destructive arena where contributors goodwill is generally ground down, and I would like to see AFD guidelines changed to explicitly call for leniency for newbies especially, and to encourage more consideration of alternatives to deletion (e.g. many marginally notable-on-their topics can exist comfortably as a list-item in an appropriate list that exists or can quickly be started). I've said this before at various AFDs, but haven't found many similarly concerned other editors to try to make a culture change there. Postdlf gave feedback to the nominator better than I have done (i believe i have seemed more critical), and it is really powerful to see two more editors chiming in and reinforcing/expanding the point. The point would be to change how frequent or new nominators and delete voters interact with contributors, reduce the damage and make AFD a more civil and even positive place. --doncram 20:08, 26 February 2016 (UTC)

Yes. My first real experience eight years ago was the same. Some deletionist tried to stomp all over an article I was just starting too. I was lucky I think that some other long time wikepedian good samaritan came to my help. I have just come back now and already run into two experienced wikipedians who have been a little short on WP:AGF. While my new username is only weeks old (I cannot find my old password) and they think I am new initially, I do have about 18 months of solid work under my belt . . so I just roll with the punches and keep WP:CIVIL in any reply and just move on . . . We might compare notes again sometime? Perhaps the start of WP:BEFORE should look like:

Thanks, @LaMona:. While the CCLL appears significant to me, I see there are more important gaps in this area to fill. Namely there is no general article on Literacy center and no List of literacy centers. I found my way to Category:Organizations promoting literacy and BTW happen to think this draft article is better than some existing ones. But it could exist comfortably as an item in a list instead, and currently I think i will proceed to develop Literacy center and List of literacy centers instead. --doncram 23:24, 16 March 2016 (UTC)

don't put mistress category under just everyone

Hello, just wanted to let you know there are two people who you added mistresses category which they do not belong, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall might have been but right now she's his wife as it says in the lead, so she no longer belong to that, if he was still married to his first wife or if they were not married or no longer together (which they've been for 10 years now), I wouldn't object. Second is Sally Hemings, Jefferson was a widower, not a married man, such woman is a partner not a mistress, she also doesn't belong in that section. please don't just add categories like that. @Monkelese:, thank you for your attention, and I see your point on both of those. Be assured I am not adding the category willy-nilly, and in fact I am probably done for now, having stepped through all candidates in several news/gossip articles with titles like "10 most famous mistresses". One was published by the Washington Post and at least one included Sally Hemings by the way. I did not accept all of those articles' suggestions; I left out ones where I perceive there to be substantial doubt. I did not have in mind that Jefferson was a widower during part or all of his relationship. I did pause about Camilla and another one where the couple subsequently married (I don't recall who was the other one, and whether I put the category onto her article or not). I think it is a valid category and we should not shrink from having it and using it carefully, though it definitely is sensitive. There are in fact women who are principally known for being mistress to a rich or important man. And there are others where it is less certain they were a mistress rather than a close friend, where consensus is needed. For example, Kay Summersby is perhaps a marginal one. I personally think it is clear enough from reliable sources that she and DDE did have an affair, and that it is best for us to use the category and not "protect" the subject or our readers from the fact of it. But it is arguable also that she is most known for being a probable mistress, so some different new category like Category:Alleged mistresses (currently a redlink) could be argued best for her and some others. About Camilla I see a gray area because she is perhaps the most salient mistress of royalty in modern times in the English-speaking world (and, in the U.S. probably is currently the very best known mistress of royalty of all times), but also she is otherwise notable and is not currently a mistress (and she is alive so it is a BLP issue). Once it is disputed (as you have done), that categorization should only be made by wide consensus, probably involving an RFC, at Camilla's talk page. Monica Lewinsky is another difficult BLP one: can she never get beyond that as defining?; perhaps she has; I chose not to add it for her.

There is also a real issue of assymetry and whether Wikipedia should follow society in perpetuating it or whether we should lead with factual, encyclopedic categorization of men too. This regards a) married men who are known for having mistresses ("misteress" has been suggested and so has "manstress"), b) male lovers of married men ("manstress" may have been suggested as term for this too?, and note there exists Category:Male lovers of royalty), and c) men, single or married, who are known for their continued sexual relationship with a rich or important married woman ("manstress" has been suggested here too; applies perhaps for some lovers of Catherine the Great?). These assymetry issues should be considered in some forum; I would like to open a small discussion for quiet consideration before any big angry blow-up. Do you have a suggestion where this could be done or whom to invite? Or, hmm, perhaps what's needed is a list-article first so that reliable sources can be collected and be reviewed as part of any discussion, rather than inviting uninformed dispute about factual matters (e.g. whether there was a sexual relationship, whether person is known for that). Category:Mount Vernon slaves?

There's a problem with the category you created, Category:Slaves of George Washington. Both Oney Judge and Christopher Sheels were "dower" slaves, owned by the Estate of Daniel Custis (Martha's first husband). As widow, Martha had the lifetime use of the "dowers" (hence the name), but neither she nor George owned them. They were held in trust for her son Jacky Custis, and following Jacky's early death, for his children. A slight majority of the Mount Vernon slaves were "dowers." George freed his slaves through his Will; the "dowers" were not freed. Following Martha's death, they reverted to the Daniel Custis Estate and were distributed to the Custis grandchildren.

It's all very confusing, although well explained at http://www.ushistory.org/presidentshouse/slaves/numbers.htm

Would you mind if I changed the category to Category:Mount Vernon slaves? That would accommodate both the "dowers" and George's slaves. == BoringHistoryGuy (talk) 16:54, 5 April 2016 (UTC)
