Your lead reversion at Jill Marsden (EastEnders)

Paul MacDermott requested a copyedit for this article in November on the GOCE requests page (we have a backlog). Although it's a GA, the prose needs a fair amount of work; the plot summaries, in particular, are overly detailed and give the article a crufty appearance. My incremental changes in the lead were reverted by you using Twinkle with the summary, "Reverted to revision 530700223 by ZippyGirl: Present tense is used for fiction (TW))".

I know that present tense is used for fiction (although this can indicate an in-universe style, which is discouraged); however, none of my edits changed present tense to past. WP:MASSRV states, "...revert a good faith edit only after careful consideration". Reverting is primarily intended to deal with vandalism. All the best, Miniapolis 23:25, 9 January 2013 (UTC)

Huguenot

This is regarding the section Exodus/England on the Wikipedia page, Huguenot. My interest and area of expertise is lace, lacemaking and its history, and on 16 September 2012 I made a change to the Huguenot page, replacing the part-sentence "Huguenots greatly contributed to the development of lace-making in Bedfordshire" by "It is often asserted that the Huguenots contributed to the development of lace-making in this area, but there is no historical evidence to support this."
If I understand the page history correctly, you reverted this, with the explanation, "There are references you just ignore them!." As someone new to Wikipedia editing at the time, I did not know how to respond, but I now gather that I should attempt to resolve this dispute by starting a discussion on your talk page. This I am now doing.

Could you please be specific about the "references" you say that I am ignoring. I can see no numbered references associated with the sentence I replaced. Are they somewhere else on the page? If there is sound historical evidence to support this then I am clearly wrong and the page should include these references. However I think we have an obligation to discuss the validity of any references to ensure that they are not just repetition of unsupported statements from books such as "The Romance of the Lace Pillow" (Thomas Wright). --Socialambulator (talk) 20:17, 3 February 2013 (UTC)

Thanks for the reference you posted on my talk page, but I think that the pertinent material in this does not represent local historical research from the museum, but is drawn entirely from the Thomas Wright book I mentioned. I'm not sure that you saw my proposal to unify this discussion, but I have gone ahead and transferred it to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Huguenot. I explain there my reasons for thinking that book is the source, and suggest that if this is agreed we can discuss it and the 19th century books which are the source for most later statements on this subject. --Socialambulator (talk) 10:50, 5 February 2013 (UTC)

The Grange, Monmouth

Blearney, you just changed the category on this page to "Defunct schools in Monmouthshire", and I can't understand why. The building is being used by a school that still seems operational, Monmouth School, although not for classes any longer, and the paragraph where it discusses the school (and links to the school) doesn't seem to indicate that it's defunct, just that a new campus is being used. Peter Mileham

I noticed you re-edited Yorkshire Coast College alumni, whilst I agree some on the page may not be as notable as others i.e Rob Whalley, who was World Duathalon Champion (Dallas), in the 1990's & Richard Seymour, inventor of the cordless kettle, I do think Peter Mileham should be, having being in a number of high profile roles & warranting a mention in Who's Who. I appreciate that he doesn't have a Wiki page (to date I've never started one, only edited), but looking at many other articles, I'm not sure that it is vital, so long as it is verifiable, not vandalism or completely pointless. Clearly nobody wants a list of random names, but it would also be somewhat frustrating to not include people who do meet the criteria

I've watched the scenes a couple of times and can still only find him called Robert, but I don't want to watch the whole episode again. Hey Bleaney

I'm sending you this because you've made quite a few edits to the template namespace in the past couple of months. If I've got this wrong, or if I haven't but you're not interested in my request, don't worry; this is the only notice I'm sending out on the subject :).

So, as you know (or should know - we sent out a centralnotice and several watchlist notices) we're planning to deploy the VisualEditor on Monday, 1 July, as the default editor. For those of us who prefer markup editing, fear not; we'll still be able to use the markup editor, which isn't going anywhere.

What's important here, though, is that the VisualEditor features an interactive template inspector; you click an icon on a template and it shows you the parameters, the contents of those fields, and human-readable parameter names, along with descriptions of what each parameter does. Personally, I find this pretty awesome, and from Monday it's going to be heavily used, since, as said, the VisualEditor will become the default.

The thing that generates the human-readable names and descriptions is a small JSON data structure, loaded through an extension called TemplateData. I'm reaching out to you in the hopes that you'd be willing and able to put some time into adding TemplateData to high-profile templates. It's pretty easy to understand (heck, if I can write it, anyone can) and you can find a guide here, along with a list of prominent templates, although I suspect we can all hazard a guess as to high-profile templates that would benefit from this. Hopefully you're willing to give it a try; the more TemplateData sections get added, the better the interface can be. If you run into any problems, drop a note on the Feedback page.

West London Academy

It's a bit of a muddle isn't it? My original edit was in respect of this Reference Desk query, which (as usual) meandered off-topic a little. Sorry, I have no idea of the source that I used, but a quick Google shows "Gaz, who went to Walford High, now the site of West London Academy in Northolt..." and "The previously Walford school, which became the Compton, has been re-established as the West London Academy.". Yongsan International School of Seoul (YISS) Edit

I noticed that you deleted the edits I made to the list of international schools article. You did that with no absolute reason and even if I only gave a link to the school website and a list of schools in Seoul as a reference, you didn't even bother checking if the school actually existed you only reverted the edits.

University Academy OF Birkenhead.

Following the post on my page, as it is my school, and I go there everyday, while you sit on a computer editing stuff, I go there and have 6955657 more information about it than you. If you don't care if its 'my school' and you saying its not 'my article', well it's not yours either. You didn't create it. Looking st you're page, you've got a 'thing' with editing pages on schools, but getting a lot of information wrong.

UAB is short for University Academy of Birkenhead. Notice all the other UCAT academy's have 'of' in them? So does UAB. That is settled. When someone goes to a wiki page, they want too know everything. Who the principal is, what kind of people they have there. Do they have a unit? When did this happen, or when did that happen? They want top know everything. I typed everything. Therefore, I suggest you edit you're own pages, and pages what are around you're local area. Template:Schools in Kent

So what is the difference between a Secondary Modern/High School and a Comprehensive/Non-selective school other than in local opinion? Curriculum is pretty much the same. Ownership/admin structures pretty much the same. Neither select on ability. Is there any difference to an outsider in reality? Atlas-maker (talk) 23:28, 30 August 2013 (UTC)

You see I don't find it confusing at all, cos for me there are 2 types of school in the state sector in Kent, those that select on ability and those that don't. But KCC makes a further distinction, categorising all those that are not under their funding control as Acamemies. I think it is very confusing to use arbitrary distinctions in the categorisation of the templates. You have linked the "High school" label to the secondary modern school article. But the lede of that article defines such a school as

"... a type of secondary school that existed in England ... until the early 1970s, under the Tripartite System ..."

So by our definition, these schools no longer exist. But you have categorised a bunch of schools as such. And the Academies have been defined as Comprehensives for some reason? By the definition we use for comps, most Academies and the non-grammars are comps because they don't select. But some are partially selective.

The labelling of the categorisations needs to change. It really needs better definition. I'd suggest grammars, academies and the rest. Schools in ... templates

I notice you have created a number of pages listing schools in England and Wales, and also template boxes for various counties/education authorities. Whilst state-funded primary and secondary schools are listed separately, independent schools are all included under one heading (at least for Schools in Kingston-upon-Thames which is my interest).

A number of areas have pre-existing "Schools in ..." pages which (at least in the case of Surrey) have independent schools separated by age range: this is clearly more informative. As a result, where you have moved a school from e.g. "Schools in Surrey" to "Schools in Kingston-upon-Thames", this has resulted in a loss of information on the summary page, a retrograde step.

I would like to improve the "Schools in Kingston-upon-Thames" page by resorting into headings

• State-funded Schools
  • State-funded Secondary Schools
  • State-funded Primary Schools
  • Special Schools
• Independent Schools
  • Independent Secondary Schools
  • Independent Primary Schools

I added Colegio Franco Mexicano, Guadalajara, Jalisco to the list of International Schools which was promptly reverted by you. The reason cited is

I noticed there is no Wikipedia entered for the CFM. Is this the reason for the reversal? I believe this School should be listed here as it is an important school sanctioned by the Agence pour l'enseignement français à l'étranger with a long tradition of bilingual education in Guadalajara. Academies and specialist schools

Thank you for your comments. As I quickly discovered, wiki policy requires citation links for references to be provided generously throughout all articles. As for category placings, I am guided by information currently provided by the most reliable sources available online, often government websites, both national and local. I am by no means an expert on schools or their categories, and had no idea that the Specialist schools programme had ended, only that many schools still refer to them, and for this reason I chose to add the specialist and academy categories. It was after finally reading what the terms secondary and comprehensive actually mean, when applied to schools, that I realised, given the current level of miscategorisation of pages in just UK schools alone, all my efforts were futile, even if I had known. OK, let me see if I have this right.
Currently there are the following types of secondary school in England: Comprehensive, Grammar, Foundation, CTC, VA, VC, Independent (Public) and Academies.
Comprehensive schools are state-funded with no selective admission process.
Grammar schools are state-funded with a selective admission process.
Foundation schools, often previously VCs, are state-funded with the governing body having greater control over staffing and admission policy.
City Technology Colleges are state-funded, independent of local authority control, overseen directly by the DfE, having a fifth of the capital costs met by private business sponsors, who also own or lease the buildings.
Voluntary Aided (VA) schools are partly state-funded and maintained, in buildings usually Roman Catholic owned, who also maintain a substantial influence in the running of the school.
Voluntary Controlled (VC) schools are state-funded, controlled by the LEA, in buildings usually owned by the CofE.
Independent schools are self financing and self governing.
Academies are directly funded by the DfE, independent of direct control by the LEA, self-governing and can receive additional support from personal or corporate sponsors.
Grammar schools can also be academies and some ex grammar schools still keep the title.

Re Specialisms and LEAs: If you click on a school's DfE number, then look at the bottom of the schoolsfinder.direct.gov.uk page for the school you can still see LEAs listed for Academies, and under Features: you can still see the term "Has a specialism", then the Specialisms:, that must mean they are still relevant.

Regarding this edit, I updated based on the latest episode broadcast at the time where it was apparent that the relationship was over and there was no hint that there would be a reunion. Having avoided spoilers, I assumed (as most viewers probably would have done) that that was it for Ian and Denise, and I don't feel I was being hasty and "report the minutae of every episode", which I'm always against doing. (However, I think this can be helpful to make sure storylines aren't forgotten - unimportant details can be removed later. Some article don't get updated for months, so things can easily be forgotten, especially when someone adds the latest episode whilst ignoring the last six months that weren't added yet. I have to disagree - at the end of the episode (when Denise found out) she ran upstairs. She didnt leave him, and while it was clear that Denise was upset, it was ambiguous if she would leave him. And in fact, as we discovered at the beginning of the next episode, she didn't leave him, she stayed the night! She did leave him during the course of that episode, but by the end of the episode she had walked into is house, and that was how it was left!!! Fair enough. I didn't see her run upstairs. I thought she walked out the door. I was obviously wrong, and I was confused when I saw she had stayed the night in the next episode. And if I hadn't updated after the episode where I thought she walked out, I wouldn't have said they broke up. But she did tell Ian to stay away from her. This wasn't my own interpretation in any way. If what I thought I saw was what actually happened, you'd have probably come to the same conclusion. Ahh but you did use your own interpretation AP, because as you have admitted, you didn't actually see her leave him (or run upstairs), so based on what you had seen before you assumed she had left him. It doesn't matter anyway, I dont get always right myself. You were probably right to change my edit about Joey and Janine because we didnt actually see them have sex... my only defence is that you never really see soaps characters have sex, and the viewer is often left to assume that if a couple are kissing passionately at the end of a scene/episode we are to take that as code for then they had sex. Anyways its all gravy. I had no idea some of the recently left characters were not updated, ill have a review of the 2012/13 leavers and see if there are any unfinished endings at the weekend. I thought I saw her leave. If it's what had happened it wouldn't have been my own interpretation. But the point is, if I had been right, I wouldn't have been "report[ing] the minutae of every episode". I understand why you thought that's what I was doing though. I don't want to get into an argument, I just want you to see that's not what I was trying to do. If I had correctly seen her go upstairs (I must have taken my eye off the screen for a moment), then I wouldn't have written what I wrote. As for sex, well yes we can assume that Joey and Janine had sex, but they only got to the kissing stage by the end of that episode, so saying they had sex would essentially be reporting on the next episode that hadn't aired yet. I think it's clear they've had sex at least twice now. It was implied they were about to have sex though, so perhaps I should have left it in. The lists are generally ok, though I know Betty Spragg needs updating. I did Ollie recently. But I want the 2012 and 2013 lists to be full referenced, so after updates, I have to research which episodes they came from. I make notes though, so I can do it. It just takes a bit of time when it's up to six-months worth of storylines. I tend to note down what characters could potentially be updated from each episode and then cross them off when they are, but I don't always go back and do that. Without checking articles but just looking at my notes, it's possible that Zainab, Yasmin, Ayesha, Ray, Jean, Tanya and Tyler may need updates, but hopefully not, and hopefully it's just my notes that are out of date. Argh, it's annoying that we get into these silly arguments.
