I have conducted a reassessment of the above article as part of the GA Sweeps process. You are being notified as this project's banner is on the talk page. I have found some concerns which you can see at Talk:Syrian American/GA1. I have placed the article on hold whilst these are fixed. Thanks. Jezhotwells (talk) 03:23, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

FYI, the article Cantonese (Yue) is up for naming review at WP:RFC, see the talk page, Talk:Cantonese (Yue)

As many East Asian Americans are of Cantonese extraction, this may be of interest to you.

Asian Americans articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Asian Americans articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

US Collaboration reactivated & Portal:United States starting next

Casliber recently posted a suggestion on the talk page for WikiProject United States about getting the US Wikipedians Collaboration page going again in an effort to build up articles for GA through FA class. See Wikipedia:U.S. Wikipedians' notice board/USCOTM. After several days of work from him the page is up and ready for action. A few candidates have already been added for you to vote on or you can submit one using the directions provided. If you are looking for inspiration here is a link to the most commonly viewed articles currently under the scope of Wikiproject United States. There are tons of good articles in the various US related projects as well so feel free to submit any article relating to US topics (not just those under the scope of WPUS). This noticeboard is intended for ‘’’All’’’ editors working on US subjects, not just those under WPUS.

The next item I intend to start updating is Portal:United States if anyone is interested in helping. Again this is not specific to WPUS and any help would be greatly appreciated to maximize visibility of US topics. The foundation has already been established its just a matter of updating the content with some new images, biographies and articles. Please let leave a comment on the Portals talk page or let me know if you have any questions or ideas. --Kumioko (talk) 19:03, 15 January 2011 (UTC)

Adding "Popular pages" to U.S.-related projects

A very interesting tool of the Wikimedia Toolserver is called WikiProject Popular pages lists. These lists are similar to project-related article lists like U. S. article lists used for generating assessment statistics. The Popular pages lists include the rank, total views, average daily views, quality and importance ratings for the listed articles. Here is the full list of projects using popular pages lists. An FAQ also is available at User:Mr.Z-man/Popular pages FAQ.

I recently added links to lists of popular pages as shown below to the U.S. Portal - WikiProjects box and the nominations sections for each of the selected articles boxes.

Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages

Because this project was not included, I am bringing up the popular pages tool here. This tool makes it very easy to track three of four balancing dimensions when selecting articles for showcasing at a portal - quality, importance and popularity. When tracking the fourth dimension, topic, the related article lists tool (such as for U.S. article lists tool) also might be useful by filtering on categories of interest.

If you do decide to use this tool, feel free to update Portal:United States/Projects/Popular pages as well.

Regards, RichardF (talk) 02:24, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. As far as this Wikiproject is concerned I am greatly troubled that Asian American wikiproject has a generally low profile. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 07:40, 23 February 2011 (UTC)
Maybe this tool will help foster some discussions on the project's more popular articles. In addition, please let me know at Wikipedia:Featured portal candidates/Portal:United States how the project's articles and other content could be better showcased. -- RichardF (talk) 13:30, 23 February 2011 (UTC)

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

There's no mention of Russell and Jordan Nagai as being Asian American. Two attempts to mention that with references have been shot down (You can't say that he's Asian from his photo, that's original research??? You can't mention the race of Russell unless you note the race of every character???) Jordan Nagai's entry has been deleted as well.

Some groups with a strong WP prescence don't have any problem tagging topics as African American, Jewish or LGBT, but Asian American topics keep getting squashed like bugs. I'm giving up but here are some sources:

http://www.channelapa.com/2009/05/jordan-nagai-as-russell-in-up.html Russell is based on Animator Peter Sohn

http://www.usatoday.com/life/movies/news/2009-05-21-pixar-main_N.htm As for Up, Pixar's 10th outing, which opens May 29, about a cranky codger and an overeager Asian kid who fly off to South America in a house hoisted by helium balloons, it will likely be the first film that all three — father, mother and child, who turns 2 today — enjoy together.

http://www.latimes.com/entertainment/news/la-et-jordanpete28-2009may28,0,7055067.story Russell was to be more hyper. In fact, the initial concept was based on the effusive personality of animator Peter Sohn, who was the voice of Emile in "Ratatouille" and is the director of the short "Partly Cloudy," which will be shown before "Up."

Asia Pacific Arts: May 22, 2009: News BitesMay 22, 2009 ... As for the Japanese American Jordan Nagai, this may be the first of hopefully many acting opportunities to come. --Timothy Natividad ... www.asiaarts.ucla.edu/090522/article.asp?parentID=108481

Should we become a task force?

This wikiproject has very few active users. Should this wikiproject become a Task force of another WikiProject, perhaps WP:WikiProject United States? I have began a discussion about this possibility here. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 15:09, 28 May 2011 (UTC)

There does not appear to be any opposition that has been posted there to make WPAA a supported WikiProject, or Task force of WP US. I shall begin a discussion there regarding what steps will occur next. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 03:22, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
Is there still interest in adding this project to the list of projects supported by WPUS? I have a couple more projects to add and I want to do them all in one group if possible since the template is protected. --Kumioko (talk) 17:23, 4 July 2011 (UTC)
There have so far been no objections, so far. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 06:10, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
Ok I will add it as a subproject in the sandbox for Template:WikiProject United States and whenever were ready we can have it moved over. --Kumioko (talk) 13:08, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
IMHO, it makes sense. The size of active editors that are members of WPAA is less than ten, and the number of those members who actively edit within the Scope of the WP is fewer than that. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 23:18, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
OK I added the project to the template in the sandbox. I just have a couple more edits to make for a couple of other things and Ill implement it. --Kumioko (talk) 23:33, 5 July 2011 (UTC)
This project has been added to the list of projects support by WikiProject United States. Over the next couple weeks I will transition the articles to use the WPUS banner with WikiProject Asian Americans. --Kumioko (talk) 20:47, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

Idea: Portal?

What could help draw people to this WikiProject would be an Asian American portal. Would you be interested in getting one? WhisperToMe (talk) 06:22, 26 June 2011 (UTC)

I wouldn't mind; but what articles would be highlighted?
As for WPAA members, I appear to be the only active member who is active within the subject, and it's difficult enough maintaining & improving those top and high importance articles within its scope; for instance recently an IP editor has been highly active in editing the Asian American and Filipino American articles regarding population; and appear to be content pushing to place New York Metro in both Region section of the infobox. So far I have assumed good faith, but I am not sure whether their edits could be considered disruptive. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 19:35, 26 June 2011 (UTC)
Pick whatever articles you like the most :) - If/when articles improve, the choices can be changed.
There are several articles that could be highly trafficked, so a portal could easily pull in more editors.
WhisperToMe (talk) 00:38, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
OK. I haven't worked with portals much in the past. I imagine there is some sort of standard format or MOS to follow. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 03:15, 29 June 2011 (UTC)
Take a look at this one. Portal:Supreme Court of the United States. It was just recently created, is pretty basic and uses the standard. --Kumioko (talk) 03:21, 29 June 2011 (UTC)

Portal image

How does one go about changing the portal image? Presently it is the default puzzle piece image. Do we have to create something like Template:Portal/Images/Asian Americans, and create a link to the appropriate image there? --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 19:06, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

Well there are a couple of things I would suggest.
  1. First I think we need to design this as a Random Portal like United States. That will ensure that the Portal is less manpower intensive to maintain and will have a shot at Featured portal someday.
  2. 2nd to do the image if we look at Portal:United States/Selected picture we can get a good idea what we need to do to set the picures.
I hope this helps. --Kumioko (talk) 19:14, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
I have already created 40 different portal selected picture pages, the image I was talking about was the small image that can be found as a link to the portal, such as that on the Talk page wikiproject header template. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 19:26, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh sorry, my mistake. --Kumioko (talk) 19:35, 1 August 2011 (UTC)
(edit conflict)For instance the US Portal image is linked here Template:Portal/Images/United states. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 19:36, 1 August 2011 (UTC)

OK the page Template:Portal/Images/Asian Americans was created, but it does not appear to be used for the portal image in the WikiProject United States headerbox on talk pages, or when the portal is added at the bottom of article pages.

What am I doing wrong? --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 12:12, 11 August 2011 (UTC)

Those are both seperate templates that need to be modified. I can take care of those. We might also need to modify the Stub templates pertaining to the project as well. --Kumioko (talk) 12:22, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
I would actually prefer that the old image be used for WikiProject wide items; I was only thinking of the Chinatown image as a portal image as it is iconic to entering a Chinese neighborhood worldwide. No other Asian American community has something as recognizable, not Little Tokyos, Koreantowns, Little Manilas, or Little Saigons. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 13:46, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
Oh ok I can switch it back then. The only thing I don't like about the old one is its kinda hard to see when used in the stub template and on the talk page banner. Its hard to make out. --Kumioko (talk) 13:53, 11 August 2011 (UTC)
It can be, admittedly, but the Chinatown gateway arch isn't inclusive to all the ethnicities that fall within the Asian American grouping. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 16:33, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Kumioko, can you please revert the image change for the Userbox and WikiProject USA Template, I only meant the new image to be used for the portal. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 18:54, 13 August 2011 (UTC)

WP:NRHP is having a Fall Photo Contest running from Oct. 21-Dec. 4, 2011. I'd like to encourage anybody who enjoys photography, and anybody who is interested in historic places to participate as a photographer, a sponsor, or both.

One way that an individual editor or a project can participate is to sponsor their own challenge. For example, somebody here might want to include a challenge such as "A barnstar will be awarded to the photographer who adds the most photos of previously non-illustrated NRHP sites related to Asian-American history to the NRHP county lists." To sponsor a challenge all you need to do is come up with an idea, post it on the contest page, and do the small bit of work needed to judge the winner(s).

Any and all contributions appreciated.

Wong Kim Ark being considered for Featured Article

United States v. The article is badly in need of additional reviewers. Please consider reading the article carefully, then going to the article's Featured Article candidacy (FAC) page (here) and commenting as you feel is appropriate. Please note that much of the FAC discussion for this article has been moved onto the talk page. The criteria for what a Featured Article needs to be can be found here. Second Generation Immigrants in the United States

I am creating a new entry titled “Second Generation Immigrants in the United States.” My article will consist of statistical data showing education and income levels of second generation immigrants in comparison to first generation immigrants and US citizens born to US natives. A large portion of my article will focus on the theories of immigrant assimilation, with emphasis places on the theory of segmented assimilation and notable criticism to this theory. I will devote a section on the unique assimilation experiences of second generation immigrants that are Asian American as they constitution a large percentage of second generation immigrants in the United States. Do you know of any resources that may aid me in developing this section on assimilation of second generation immigrants that are Asian American? I would greatly appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thank you. Marymorales291 (talk) 05:03, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

Feel free to look at the references used in the article, and the article's about the ethnicities that make up the Asian American census group, they can be mined for generational differences.
Also look at the Filipino American article, there is a section that I wrote that is well sourced that talks about cultural identity that has significant generational issues. --RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 00:01, 10 March 2012 (UTC)

History of the Hmong in Merced, California

Hi! I started History of the Hmong in Merced, California with information from several books and sources on the Hmong. An editor argued that the article was "oddly specific" - Talk:History_of_the_Hmong_in_Merced,_California and he started a talk page debate arguing that the article should be consolidated Talk:Hmong_American#Merge_proposal - From my understanding there were only three participants, including myself, the user, and one other person. He and the other person argued for consolidation, while I argued against it. The last post was in 2010 and there was no consensus, and no further effort for dispute resolution. In late 2011 he consolidated the article with no further discussion, but I wasn't aware of it until now. I reverted his consolidation, but kept the section he made at Merced, California#Hmong community - I alerted him to my reversion and to this new discussion here.

Considering the contents of History_of_the_Hmong_in_Merced,_California and Merced, California#Hmong community, do you believe that a merge was necessary WhisperToMe (talk) 18:04, 11 March 2012 (UTC)

While I have checked with the Hmong community to see if anybody is interested in writing a Hmong Wikipedia, I also wonder if it would be a good idea to establish a WikiProject about the Hmong/Miao.

We do have WikiProjects on the Yoruba and Igbo people of western Africa, so there is a precedent allowing ethnic based WikiProjects where the ethnic group is not in one particular country WhisperToMe (talk) 19:58, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

Asian-American as an adjective

Hi, I am proposing a bunch of category renamings from "Asian American" to "Asian-American" where the phrase is being used as a compound adjective. I trust there is no objection from this WikiProject, but you can currently see them at WP:CFDS. – Fayenatic London 21:22, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi! What are some Chinese-language newspapers active in LA and Orange counties in the 1990s?

Asian American interracial trope

So last year, 2012, the Washington Post wrote an article about a common trope of Asian American women in interracial relationships. Now I would like to integrate it into Wikipedia much like how the "Dragon Lady" trope has been. However, I would like to seek guidance as to where. Would it be better in the stereotype section at Asian American, in Asian Americans in arts and entertainment which is a sub-article of Asian American of notable Asian Americans in that field, in one of the articles listed at Stereotypes of Asians, in Interracial marriage in the United States, or elsewhere? As I am unsure as to which I will notify possible related Wikiprojects to seek guidance regarding this question.--RightCowLeftCoast (talk) 11:44, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

Discussion to remove the Automatically assessed logic from the WikiProject United States template

Greetings, there is a discussion regarding removal of the logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories from Template:WikiProject United States. Most of the categories (over 220 Wikipedia wide) were deleted in February 2013 because they were empty. These categories were previously populated by a bot that hasn't run since 2011 and the categories aren't used. Removal of this uneeded/unused logic will greatly reduce the size and complexity of the WikiProject United States template. Any comments or questions are encouraged here. Kumioko (talk) 18:19, 28 August 2013 (UTC)

Lest there is any confusion for people who don't speak the same language, the words "logic used to populate Automatically assessed article categories" refer to the feature that was supposed to allow this WikiProject's template to "inherit" class and importance ratings from other WikiProjects. Kumioko says that there are no longer any bots performing the function that formerly copied those ratings. --Orlady (talk) 22:54, 31 August 2013 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Proposed deletion of Laotian Chinese American

The article Laotian Chinese American has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Subject has been tagged for notability and has been unreferenced since March 2012. Subject does not appear to have received any significant coverage from any reliable sources; therefore the subject fails WP:GNG

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Idea for a project: coordinate with other Wikipedias for non-English articles about U.S. school districts

It may be a good idea to help develop non-English articles about American school districts. These are the avenues which Asians become Asian Americans. Many school districts have documents and websites in East and South Asian languages. If you know people who speak or write any of the following languages they would be of a great assistance to help develop these school district articles.

These are the following East/Southeast and South Asian languages which I have seen American school districts use for communications with parents:

East/Southeast Asian languages:

  • Mandarin Chinese
  • Vietnamese
  • Korean
  • Japanese
  • Hmong
    • The Hmong Wikipedia is not yet in the mainspace and I'm looking for contributors to help build it up!
  • Filipino
  • Karen (one school district in Minnesota)
  • Chin (one school district in Maryland)

South Asian languages:

  • Bengali
  • Urdu
  • Hindi (the New York City school system had published documents in Hindi, but it has no Hindi website)
  • Tamil (one school district in Michigan has a Tamil handbook)

Use of word "Caucasian" to designate non-internee related collections with the WWII camps.

In https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Topaz_War_Relocation_Center#Potential_problems_with_use_of_.22Caucasian.22_in_collections_description_in_WP there is a section concerning collections associated with the camp experience that were previously described as by "Caucasians" until i changed it to a more neutral descriptive and brought the issue to discussion on the Topaz talk page. I guess my major concern is that if it is a title that has been created by an official government agency then i guess it could continue to be used because it was not created by WP. But if it were created by WP then we really should not use that word to designate those collections developed by internees and non-internees especially as there are known examples of non-Japanese voluntarily living in the camps because they had an existing relationship with someone such as a spouse. So we really cannot describe all internees as of Japanese origin although they certainly were primarily interned because of their Japanese association as perceived by society as a whole. Would members having an interest in Asian history in the US think it appropriate to avoid the use of the word Caucasian in describing collections if it is a WP supplied word? My anthropological training thinks that it best be not used in WP?2605:E000:9143:7000:3832:5234:5BA4:7DB6 (talk) 18:48, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

That was a word I supplied to distinguish the archival collection from internee histories. I replied on the talk page of Topaz War Relocation Center. If you look at the source, you can see it was not published by a government organization. Rachel Helps (BYU) (talk) 20:08, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:26, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

Asian American Hollywood

1961's Flower Drum Song (film) was the first major Hollywood film to feature a majority Asian cast in a contemporary Asian-American story,[1] and 1993's The Joy Luck Club (film) was the second, making 2018's Crazy Rich Asians,[2][3] only the third.[4] 3 films in 57 years. -- 65.94.42.168 (talk) 03:29, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

Should we have a list of major Hollywood feature films with majority Asian casts, and perhaps also telling atleast the Asian experience? (This would then be able to include period pieces and non-Asian-American stories like 2005's Memoirs of a Geisha (film). / but exclude films about the white experience in Asia, or white savior in Chinatown ) -- 65.94.42.168 (talk) 03:51, 26 August 2018 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:23, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Names of Wong Kim Ark's sons

Hi. I'm hoping to find some information regarding the names of Wong Kim Ark's four sons. Wong Kim Ark, as many/most of you probably already know, was the subject of an 1898 US Supreme Court decision that affirmed he was a US citizen per the Citizenship Clause of the 14th Amendment, because he was born in the US, and despite his being of Chinese descent.

Wong's four sons are recorded in US immigration records (early 1900s) as having the following names (Chinese characters plus English transcriptions):

  • 黃毓煥 (Wong Yoke Fun)
  • 黃郁賜 (Wong Yook Sue)
  • 黃沃修 (Wong Yook Thue)
  • 黃沃沾 (Wong Yook Jim)

My questions:

  • In the first son's name, is "Yoke" a plausible transcription for 毓 (in the Taishanese dialect used in Wong Kim Ark's ancestral region)? One person editing the Wong Kim Ark article right now is arguing that it should be "Yook", just like the other son's names, and that the immigration hearing transcript's use of "Yoke" is suspect.
  • I note that the four names use three different characters (毓, 郁, and 沃) to start the sons' personal names — and yet they all appear to sound the same, or nearly the same, based on the English transcriptions. Are these three characters homonyms (or near-homonyms) in the Taishanese dialect? Is there an explanation for why these names would have been written differently in this way, despite apparently sounding similar?

I have no familiarity at all with Chinese (written form or any dialect), so I would be grateful for any knowledgeable insights. — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 06:22, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

I understand now, fwiw, that the portion of the name which I'm asking about is called the "generation name" — which, again, leads me to wonder why it's not the same (written as well as spoken) for all of Wong's sons. — Richwales (no relation to Jimbo) 17:32, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month 2021

Hello! The Wikimedia Foundation's Communications department is looking at ways we can bring attention to activities and members in our movement related to Asian American and Pacific Islander and Asian History content during Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month (next month, May 2021). We are wondering if there are any activities planned around this year's AAPI Heritage Month or any general AAPI related content activities we can help promote next month. Additionally, if there are folks interested in talking with us about ways we can help bring attention to both these efforts and folks within the AAPI communities working to better Wikipedia, please let me know! You can either reply here, or reach me via email: gvarnum@wikimedia.org. Thank you! --Gregory Varnum (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 21:25, 14 April 2021 (UTC)

Need Advice To Improve Current Draft

Hello,

I am a Filipino-American artist hoping to lift up Filipino immigrant voices in the entertainment industry. I am starting with Filipino-American filmmaker and actress Aina Dumlao. It’s a draft that’s been sitting un-approved for a few months now and I’m seeking advice to improve the draft and its chances for approval. I am totally new to this so any help at all will be very much appreciated.

I am pre-writing two other articles for notable Filipinas - Yong Chavez (trailblazing journalist) and Michelle Josue (award-winning documentarian).

Thank you.
